Wauneta I. Morin
ULYSSES -- Wauneta I. Morin, 88, a former Ulysses resident, died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Woodland Terrace Retirement Center in Bridgman, Mich.
She was born Oct. 28, 1911, at Duenweg, Mo., the daughter of Othelho and Minnie Oliver. The family moved from Missouri to Great Bend when she was 6 and to Ulysses in 1924.
She graduated from Healds Business College in Sacramento, Calif., as a legal secretary in the 1940s and graduated as a practical nurse in 1963 from Porter Hospital School of Nursing in Denver. She worked as a licensed practical nurse primarily in private homes. After her retirement, she moved to Michigan.
In April 1927, she married George J. Hagerman. In 1951, she married Nelson A. Morin. He died in September 1998. She was also preceded in death by two sons, three sisters, three half sisters, a half brother and two great-grandchildren.
She is survived by a son, James, Vancouver, Wash.; a daughter, Zerita, Berrien Springs, Mich.; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Marge and Minnie, both of Ulysses; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery. Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Berrien Springs Village Seventh-day Adventist Church, of which she was a member, or to the Woodland Terrace Activity Fund, both in care of Allred Funeral Home, Berrien Springs; or to the Grant County Museum, in care of the Grant County Funeral Home in Ulysses.
Cleta McGuire
DIGHTON -- Cleta McGuire, 71, died Friday, June 9, 2000, at Albuquerque, N.M.
Born at Dighton on Sept. 25, 1928, she was the daughter of John and Grace (McKelvy) McGuire. She graduated from Dighton High School, earned a bachelor's degree from Marymount College in Salina and a master's degree from Colorado State.
For 30 years she taught school in Kansas, Missouri, Okinawa, Germany and the Zuni Reservation in New Mexico. From 1981 to 1997, she worked for the Social Security office in Albuquerque.
Miss McGuire was a member of Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church of Albuquerque. With traveling as her special interest, she had visited 60 countries.
Survivors include three cousins, Blanche McKelvy and Bernice Kepner, both of Dighton, and Mina Zeller, Ozawkie.
Rosary will be 7:30 p.m. Friday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorial Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Dighton, with the Rev. David Kraus as celebrant. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Lane County Long Term Care Center, in care of the funeral home.
Marguerite Dean Wright
SUBLETTE -- Marguerite Dean Wright, 76, of Sublette and formerly of Knox City, Texas, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at her daughter's home in Sublette.
She was born Dec. 11, 1923, at Knox City, the daughter of Walter J. and Maggie (Love) Cagle.
On May 10, 1939, she married Novell L. Wright at Knox City. Sublette residents since 1968, moving from Knox City where she spent most of her life, they returned to Knox City in 1973.
Her husband died Aug. 12, 1984. Due to ill health, she returned to Sublette in April 2000 to be close to her daughter.
A homemaker, she had worked as a bookkeeper for an agricultural business. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Sublette.
Survivors include three sons, Larry Wright, Sublette, Rodney Wright and Arlis Wright, both of Abilene, Texas; two daughters, Beverly Hall, Sublette, and Tammya Bowzer, Rockledge, Fla.; two sisters, Pauline Marion and Stella Curd, both of Knox City; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Elmwood Chapel, Abilene, with the Rev. Darrell Marion officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery, Abilene.
Visitation hours are until 6 tonight at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to St. Catherine's Hospice of Garden City or the United Methodist Church of Sublette, both in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
Adolph Rome
Vigil service for Adolph Rome, 90, will be 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating.
Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard.
Mr. Rome died Monday, July 10, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Feb. 14, 1910, at St. Peter, the son of Nick and Paulina (Boxler) Rome. He grew up in St. Peter, graduated from St. Joseph's Academy High School in Hays, and then worked as a short haul truck driver in Kansas and eastern Colorado. At that time, he was also an exceptional baseball player.
On Aug. 23, 1941, he married Mabel Eppinger at Norton. They moved to Denver where he served in the U.S. Army in the 102nd Infantry Ozark Division. He served most of his time in France, Germany and Belgium.
After the service, he returned to Denver where he worked at Gates Rubber Co. He also sold produce in the Denver area. He and his wife moved to Finney County in 1957 and he worked as a farmer. He retired in 1975 and moved to Garden City.
Mr. Rome was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He enjoyed gardening, stain glass work and refinishing furniture.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who died May 9, 2000; three brothers, Peter Rome, Dave Rome and Ed Rome; and four sisters, Catherine Ruman, Clara Rome, Ann Scariano and Mary Rome.
He is survived by a son, Thomas Rome, Arvada, Colo.; a daughter, Mary Bourne, Edmond, Okla.; four brothers, Anton Rome, Mike Rome Sr. and Jerome Rome, all of Garden City, and John Rome, Hugoton; a sister, Patricia Ohmes, Garden City; and three grandchildren.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Maxine Herbel
HUGOTON -- Maxine Smith Herbel, 82, of Hugoton, died Wednesday, July 12, 2000, at Huerfano Medical Center in Walsenburg, Colo.
She was born Jan. 21, 1918, at Hugoton, the daughter of Robert Leslie Sr. and Ethyl (Lahey) Smith. A lifetime area resident, she was a homemaker and belonged to the United Methodist Church of Hugoton.
On July 24, 1938, she married Charles E. "Chuck" Herbel at Hugoton. He died July 4, 1997. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Leslie Smith Jr.
She is survived by two sons, Stephen R. Herbel, Shreveport, La., and Charles E. Herbel, Elk City; a daughter, Patricia Greenlee, Escondido, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Hugoton, with the Rev. Nel Holmes officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton.
Sussie Isabell Kee
Funeral for Sussie Isabell Kee, 90, of Electra, Texas, will be 2:30 this afternoon at Dutton Funeral Home, Electra, with the Rev. Paul Naeve officiating. Burial will be in New Electra Cemetery.
Mrs. Kee died Thursday, July 13, 2000, at Bowie (Texas) Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 26, 1909, at Athens, Ala., the daughter of William Joseph and Ancie Bell (Power) Breedlove. She moved to Electra during the oil boom when her older brothers moved their mother and the younger children there. She attended schools at Harrold, Texas, and at Electra.
Most of her adult life was spent in the Electra area. She was a member of Church of the Nazarene and also belonged to WMU at First Baptist Church of Electra.
On Oct. 10, 1928, she married William Earl Kee in Wichita County. He died Sept. 2, 1954. She was also preceded in death by a son, Aaron Archie Kee, in February 1968.
She is survived by three daughters, Velma Moore, Bowie, Lois Moore, Iowa Park, Texas, and Reva Crues, Garden City; three sons, Billy Kee, Holliday, Texas, Troy Kee, Midlothian, Texas, and John Kee, Irving, Texas; a sister, Erian Short, Laurel, Miss.; a brother, Amos Breedlove, Baton Rouge, La.; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
