Myrtle Gertrude Howell
SYRACUSE -- Myrtle Gertrude Howell, 91, a longtime Syracuse resident before moving to Liberal in 1990, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Liberal.
She was born July 9, 1908, at Ransom, the daughter of Charles and Lillian (Smith) Swisher, and attended school in Syracuse.
Mrs. Howell had spent most of her life in Syracuse and Hamilton County. She and her husband, Roy Howell, operated Aimes Coffee Shop in Syracuse for several years before owning and operating the Uptown Cafe & Motel in Syracuse for 40 years. They also owned and operated the Fireside Inn in Glenwood Springs, Colo., for several years. She also owned racing horses and racing dogs.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Eastern Star and Rebekah Lodge, was involved in cooking and gardening and, as a farm girl, she enjoyed life and nature.
Survivors include a son, Marvin Portlock, Syracuse; two daughters, Delores Lindsey, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Dorothy Sargent, Liberal; two brothers, Al Swisher, Guymon, Okla., and Everett Swisher, Syracuse; two sisters, LaVerna Browning, Syracuse, and Margaret Clark, Holly, Colo.; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Marshall Portlock; her second husband, Roy Howell; two sons, Milton Portlock and Jack Portlock; a grandson; and seven brothers and sisters, Thelma Ulery, Orville Swisher, Arden Swisher, Rex Swisher, Harold Swisher, Preston Swisher and Chester Swisher.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. MST Saturday in Syracuse Cemetery, with the Rev. Gene Slack officiating.
Visitation hours are until 8 MST tonight, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MST Friday and 9 to 10 a.m. MST Saturday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to the Hamilton County Extended Care Facility, in care of the funeral home, Monuments & Gifts, P.O. Box 1253, Syracuse, KS 67878.
Sallie Belle Phillippy
SYRACUSE -- Graveside service for Sallie Belle Phillippy, 91, of Rogers, Ark., will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Fairview Memorial Gardens in Fayetteville, Ark. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Rogers, with Dr. William A. Rail officiating.
Mrs. Phillippy died Monday, June 12, 2000, at a nursing home in the Rogers area.
She was born Nov. 26, 1908, at Memphis, the daughter of Thomas Jensen and Anna Pearl (Sullivan) Jensen.
Along with her husband, Roy, and their children, she moved from west Texas to northwest Arkansas in 1950. She and her husband owned and operated R & S Grill in Fayetteville for many years.
She is survived by two sons, George D. Phillippy, Syracuse, and Sid J. Phillippy, Rogers; a sister, Mary Rosellen, San Luis Obispo, Calif.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister, Celia Weston; and a son, Stanly Wayne Phillippy.

Eva Margaret 'Peggy' Carpenter
HUGOTON -- Eva Margaret "Peggy" Carpenter, 80, died Thursday, June 8, 2000, at her home in Rancho Bernardo, Calif.
She was born July 11, 1919, on a farm near Sublette, the oldest daughter of George Arthur and Ettie Myrtle (Kempf) Trahern.
On Dec. 22, 1940, she married Billie Dean Carpenter, a Hugoton resident, at Pratt. In 1942, they moved to Denver where they resided until moving to southern California in 1959. A homemaker, through the years she was active in running the family farms in Stevens and Texas counties. She enjoyed her family, bingo and managing the family investments.
She is survived by a daughter, Karon K. Carpenter, Simi Valley, Calif.; a son, Billie Ray Carpenter, Pinecliffe, Colo.; a brother, Orval Trahern, Delta, Colo.; a sister, Betty Lindenberger, Westminster, Colo.; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1998; and two brothers, Vern Trahern and Merle Trahern.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Paul's Memorial Chapel, Hugoton, with the Rev. Charles Waugh officiating. Burial will be in Hugoton Cemetery.
Genoula 'Genny' Kenworthy
Genoula "Genny" Kenworthy, 84, died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
She was born Aug. 31, 1915, at Greeley, Colo., the daughter of Isaac B. and Fenie Dora (Langford) Deaver. When she was young, the family moved to Amarillo, Texas, where she attended schools.
In 1931, she married Anderson Litle at Portales, N.M. She married Carl J. Evans in 1938 in Portales. In 1950, they moved to Las Animas, Colo. He died in 1960. In 1962, she married William S. Kenworthy at La Junta, Colo. They moved to Granite Shoals, Texas, in 1985. He died in 1986.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Eugenia Rose Litle; a son, Jerry Litle; four brothers, Herbert Deaver, Bernard Deaver, Orville Deaver and Jack Deaver; a granddaughter; and two grandsons.
Mrs. Kenworthy had lived in Garden City since 1994. She worked as a volunteer for Emergency Medical Services while living in Granite Shoals and also volunteered for several years at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City. A homemaker, she enjoyed gardening and crocheting.
She is survived by three sons, Jim Litle, Roundup, Mont., Bill Evans, Garden City, and Tim Evans, Lansing, Mich.; a brother, Bert Deaver, Amarillo; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. MT Monday in Las Animas Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Cartmell officiating.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.
Earl Boyer Williams
ULYSSES -- Earl Boyer Williams, 90, of Ulysses, died Thursday, June 15, 2000 at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital.
He was born Jan. 12, 1910, the son of Fred and Artilisa Williams in Edwards County.
On Sept. 24, 1930, he married Loretta Gentry in Kinsley. She preceded him in death. He also was preceded in death by his parents, and his two brothers, Dale and William.
Mr. Williams moved to Ulysses in 1931, where he became a farmer and a livestockman.
He was a a member of the Church of Christ and Rotary. He served on the ASCS Committee, the school board, and was president of Pioneer Communications for 50 years.
Survivors include his two sons, Milton Williams of Dallas Center, Iowa, and Don Williams of Ulysses; his daughter, Joan Beaumont of Hemphill, Texas; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grant County Cemetery, with Don, Kerry and Mike Williams presiding. A memorial has been established for the High Plains Children's Home and Earl Williams Pioneer Communications Scholarship Fund, and contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Mildred L. Taton
SATANTA -- Mildred L. Taton, 83, of Satanta, died at Garden Valley Retirement Village Thursday, June 15, 2000.
Born April 27, 1917, she was the daughter of Edgar Richard and Bertha Bell Roberts of Elkhart.
She married George E. Taton of Syracuse, on August 17, 1935. He preceded her in death. She also was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, one brother, two grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mrs. Taton was a member of the Pleasant Prairie Church of God in Satanta.
Survivors include two sons, George and Ronald Taton, both of Denver; a daughter, Dolores Szekula of Lakin; her two half brothers, Don and Robert of California; 9 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will take place at 2 p.m. Monday at the Pleasant Prairie Church of God, presided by Rev. Fred Hauck. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery
in Sublette.
Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Haskell County Funeral home. A memorial has been established at Mrs. Taton's church, and may be left at the Shopping Stop True Value in Satanta or with the funeral home.
Edward A. Bender
TRIBUNE -- Vigil service for Edward A. Bender, 74, will be 7 p.m. MDT Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tribune. Funeral will be 10 a.m. MDT Friday at the church, with the Rev. Jun Mangulabnan officiating.
Mr. Bender died Tuesday, June 6, 2000, at Greeley County Hospital in Tribune.
He was born Nov. 9, 1925, in Graham County, the son of Matthew J. and Magdalene (Pfeifer) Bender.
Mr. Bender was the owner and operator of Bender Auto & Truck Sales, a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus (3rd Degree), and was a veteran of the Korean conflict serving in the U.S. Marine Corp.
On Sept. 26, 1950, he married Betty A. Bolen at Wallace. She died May 6, 1994, at Denver.
He is survived by four sons, Gerald, Inloa, Okla., Kevin, Littleton, Colo., Kenneth, Tribune, and Kent, Denver; a daughter, Jeanette Smith, Castle Rock, Colo.; three sisters, Matilda Kleymann, Tribune, Barbara Moran, Denver, and Albena Browning, Scott City; and 11 grandchildren.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 9 tonight and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune. Memorials are suggested to Greeley County Hospital, in care of the funeral home.
