Frances Brown
Johnson CITY -- Graveside service for Frances Brown, 91, of Richfield, was to be 2 p.m. today in Richfield Cemetery, with the Rev. Roland Wolf officiating.
Mrs. Brown died Tuesday, June 13, 2000, at the Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson City.
She was born Oct. 9, 1908, at Ingalls, the daughter of Frank and Marietta (Neas) Leffel.
A Richfield resident since 1956, she was employed in the county treasurer's office and the road department in Morton County for several years. She enjoyed her home on the prairie and being outdoors taking care of it, and also enjoyed having pets.
After marrying Jacob Welsch on Aug. 31, 1928, at Trousdale, they moved to the Richfield and Elkhart areas. On Nov. 18, 1941, she married Roy Brown, who died Dec. 20, 1984. She was also preceded in death by two grandchildren and a stepdaughter, June Caldwell.
She is survived by three sons, Darrell Brown, Lamoille, Nev., Marvin Brown, Eunice, Mo., and Melvin Brown, Castle Rock, Colo.; two daughters, Claretta McElroy, Gardendale, Texas, and Colene Lubbers, Littleton, Colo.; 17 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Lorie H. Hatcher
SATANTA -- Lorie H. Hatcher, 79, of Satanta, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at her home.
She was born Jan. 21, 1921, in Grant County, the daughter of George and Charlotte Bales.
A graduate of Satanta High School, she went on to complete her education at Salt City Business College in Hutchinson. She became a tax accountant, her profession for more than 40 years, and the co-owner of a farm.
On Oct. 11, 1943, she married Henry Hatcher of Liberal. He preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 1992. She also was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Calvin and George Bales.
Mrs. Hatcher was a member of the United Methodist Church of Satanta, O.E.S., and the United Methodist Women. Her hobbies included Bible study and stained glass craft.
She is survived by one son, Bill Hatcher, and his wife, Marcia, of Satanta; three sisters, Doris Kimbrell of Ensign, Mary Bales of New Haven, Conn., and Eva Stubbs of Whitewater; and two grandchildren, Jessica and Will Hatcher of Satanta.
The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Satanta, with Rev. Larry Myers officiating. Burial will be in Dudley Township Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Haskell County Funeral Home. Memorials may be left at the Shopping Stop True Value in Satanta or mailed to the Haskell County Funeral Home.
Helen Mercedes Hund
Graveside service for Helen Mercedes Hund, 79, a former Garden City resident, will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens in Olathe.
Mrs. Hund died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at her home in Olathe.
She was born Feb. 18, 1921, in Harper County, the daughter of Lester and Helen (Smitheisler) Leaderbrand. She grew up in Wichita and attended St. Mary's Cathedral High School.
Mrs. Hund lived in Garden City from 1960 until moving to Olathe in 1986.
She married Eugene Raymond Hund in 1941. He died in 1985.
Survivors include a son, Ronald Hund, Wichita; two daughters, Susan Hund-Milne, Maize, and Jeannie Hund, Olathe; two brothers, Joe Leaderbrand and Jack Leaderbrand; and six grandchildren.
Mrs. Hund will lie in state until 8 tonight and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Olathe.
Vern A. Thompson
Johnson City -- Funeral for Vern A. Thompson, 76, will be 11 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church, Johnson City, with the Rev. Glenn Fogo officiating. Burial will be in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson City.
Mr. Thompson died Monday, June 12, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
The son of Fred L. and Leila (Reece) Thompson, he was born Sept. 8, 1923, at his parents' farm home in Stafford County.
A resident of Johnson City since 1954, he was a farmer in Hamilton, Morton, Kearny and Stanton counties and was a rancher.
Mr. Thompson was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he also served as a board member, belonged to the Odd Fellow Lodge where he held several offices and was a past Nobel Grand, was a lifetime member of the VFW, a former Johnson City Council member, and belonged to the Farm Bureau Board and the Garden City PCA Board.
During World War II, he served in Company G, 13th Infantry, 8th Army, in Europe. He loved family, the mountains, rain, and running the combine.
On Nov. 29, 1944, he married Jean Johnson City at Trousdale. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, David, Great Bend, Keith, Johnson City, and Mark, Lawrence; three daughters, Linda McCann, St. Peters, Mo., Janet Cassing, Aurora, Ore., and Karen Markley, Syracuse; two brothers, Harold Thompson, Syracuse, and Loren Thompson, Macksville; a sister, Verlie Bennett, Syracuse; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson City. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Kansas State University Cancer Research Center, both in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson City, KS 67855.
Alvin E. Heili
Vigil service for Alvin E. Heili, 78, will be 7:30 tonight at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.
Mr. Heili died Friday, June 9, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Feb. 17, 1922, in Rush County, the son of Jacob and Catherine (Shupman) Heili. The family moved to western Finney County when he was 10. At the age of 17, he moved to Chicago and lived there for four years before returning to Finney County.
An employee of the Kansas Department of Transportation for 35 years, he drove the stripper truck and the snow plow, and also painted. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and enjoyed painting ceramics, and making Christmas and birthday presents for his family. His special interest was his family and church activities.
On Sept. 11, 1947, he married Florena Rohr at Clayton, N.M. She survives. Other survivors are five sons, Arthur Heili, Grainfield, Edward Heili, Wichita, Andrew "Jake" Heili, Claremont, N.C., Bill Heili and Thomas Heili, both of Aurora, Colo.; two daughters, Nancy Gillock, Deerfield, and Bonnie Burgardt, Garden City; a brother, Wayne Heili, Scott City; a sister, Loretta Mehler, Chicago; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Rudy and Rich; and three sisters, Josephine Brungardt, Priscilla Herman and Clementina Unrein.
Visitation hours are until 6 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the Alvin Heili Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Juan Jose 'Sotero' Hinojos
Funeral for Juan Jose "Sotero" Hinojos, 45, was 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Church of God of the First Born, Garden City, with the Rev. John Janas officiating. Burial was to be 4 this afternoon in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Hinojos died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at his home at 1804 St. John St.
He was born April 22, 1955, at Santa Barbara, Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of Juan and Aurelia (Armendariz) Hinojos.
A Garden City resident since March 23, 1992, moving from Kanab, Utah, he was a laborer for seven years at IBP and was a member of Church of God of the First Born. His hobbies were gardening and spending time with his family.
On April 28, 1979, he married Rosa Rosaura at Fort Morgan, Colo. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Josue Hinojos, of the home; two daughters, Ana Denise Hinojos and Olivia Michelle Hinojos, both of the home; his mother, Mexico; three brothers, Adolfo Hinojos, Snyder, Colo., Filiberto Hinojos, Chicago, and Reyes Hinojos, Garden City; and three sisters, Enriqueta Valverde, Clara Estela Janas and Maria Feliz Perez, all of Garden City. He was preceded in death by his father.
