Everett E. Stullken
LAKIN -- Everett E. Stullken, 91, died Tuesday, June 20, 2000, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.
Born May 4, 1909, in Gray County to Edward and Ida (Dixon) Stullken, he was home schooled in his early years, later graduating from Lakin Rural High School in 1936. He worked as a printer at the Lakin Independent afterward, but joined the U.S. Army Aug. 15, 1942, and served in the Pacific Theater, Luzon and New Guinea during World War II.
After his discharge, he became a printer again, working in Hugoton, Garden City, Las Animas, Colo., and then in Dodge City as a commercial printer. His projects included volume one of Kearny County History. He finally worked 20 years in Guymon, Okla., in a commercial printing plant, retired at 74 and moved back to Lakin. After his retirement, he wrote the Old Time Column in the Lakin Independent.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph Dean Stullken and Leslie G. Stullken; one nephew; and two grand-nieces.
Survivors include one nephew, Lloyd E. Stullken of Topeka; one niece, Karen Riddle of Topeka; several grand-nieces and nephews; and two great-grand nieces.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at the Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin, the Rev. William Salmon officiating. Burial will be at Lakin Cemetery.
Calling hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Kearny County Historical Society in care of the funeral home.
Eva M. Wing
LEOTI -- Services were 10:30 a.m. today for Eva M. Wing of Leoti, held at the First Christian Church in Scott City. The Rev. John Warring officiated and burial was in Beulah Cemetery
in Wichita County.
Wing, 62, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Hays Medical Center in Hays. Born Jan. 11, 1938 in Scott City, the daughter of Albert L. and Bertha M. (Beach) Dague, she moved to Leoti from Scott City in 1974. She was a homemaker.
She married Paul Wing April 12, 1959, at Scott City. He died May 7, 1997.
She was a member of First Christian Church in Scott City and was a former Sunday School teacher there.
Survivors include three sons, Arlen Wing of Elk City, Okla., Loren Wing of Leoti, and Larry Wing of Logan County; her mother, Bertha Dague of Scott City; and three grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the Wichita County Chapter of the American Cancer Society in care of Price and Sons Funeral Home, Leoti.
Roy Elmer Fogelman
ULYSSES -- Roy Elmer Fogelman, 82, died June 19, 2000, in Natich, Mass.
He was born Sept. 27, 1917, in Grant County near Ulysses, the son of John E. and Ella Kendall Fogelman. He started school at the District I schoolhouse in the Old Ulysses town site and later attended high school in Ulysses.
He belonged to the Presbyterian Church in Natich. In 1936, he joined the U.S. Navy and served through World War II. After working with the John Hancock Insurance Co., he established his own bicycle repair business and gift shop.
His wife, Jean, preceded him in death, as did two brothers, Lee and Marion Fogelman; and three sisters, Lillie Smith, Minnie Sherwood and Amy May.
Survivors include two sons, Carl Fogelman of Omaha and Peter Fogelman of the home; one brother, Ray Fogelman of Ulysses; two sisters, Nora Cecil of Ulysses and Mae Cadenhead of Greenville, S.C.; several nieces and nephews; and two grandsons.
The service will be Wednesday at John Everett & Sons Funeral Home in Natich. Cremation will follow.
Memorials may be sent to the Grant County Museum in Ulysses, or to the donor's choice.
Frank Morris Baker
COPELAND -- Frank Morris Baker, 75, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at St. Mary's Hospital in San Francisco, Calif.
Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Haskell County Funeral Home in Sublette.
Pappy Chapman
LIBERAL -- Pappy Chapman, 27, died Saturday, June 17, 2000 at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal. He was a longtime Liberal resident.
He was born Sept. 15, 1972, in Clinton, Okla., to Lupe Montoya and Barbara Chapman.
He worked in the oil fields of the area.
Survivors include his father, Lupe Montoya, and stepmother Holly Montoya of Farmington, N.M.,; his mother, Barbara Beason, and stepfather, James Beason of Johnson City; a daughter, Alexis Chapman, of Liberal; sisters, Nicole Martinez of Liberal and Jessie Martinez of Johnson City.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kitch Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Bagwell presiding. Burial will be at Liberal Cemetery.
Calling time will be from 1 to 9 p.m. on Monday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at Kitch Funeral Home.
Brenda Geubelle
LAKIN -- Brenda Geubelle, 36, died Monday, June 19, 2000, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
Born January 19, 1964, at Wichita to Denis and Sherril (Schmidt) Geubelle, she lived in Newton until the age of 12, attending Northview Opportunity Center and Newton public schools. She moved with her family to Lakin in 1977 and attended Valentine and Ulysses schools.
She was a resident of Southwest Development Services, Inc., now Bethphage. She enjoyed her family activities and friends.
Survivors include both parents; three brothers, Bryan Geubelle of Hampton, Va.; Doug Geubelle of Lakin and Jeff Geubelle of Graham, Wash.; one sister, Krista Gorman of Ft. Scott; and her grandmother, Delphine Schmidt of Lakin.
Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Lakin, the Rev. Mike Helms officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Calling hours are noon to 8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin. Memorials may be made to Russell Childhood Development Center in care of the funeral home.
Maurine E. Thomas
LIBERAL - Maurine E. Thomas, 89, died Thursday, June 15, 2000 at Liberal Good Samaritan Center. She had been a Liberal resident since 1940
She was born April 21, 1911 at Lakin, Kans., the daughter of Alvin R. and Nora (Roth) McCullough. She was a 1929 graduate of Lakin High School.
Mrs. Thomas was the deputy register of deeds and then worked for Etzold Abstract until her retirement in 1075. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Christian Women's Fellowship and formerly attended the Prestige Club. She had also taught cooking for the 4-H club. She was an avid walker and seamstress and loved flowers of all kinds.
On October 22, 1928, she married Paul E. Thomas in Garden City, Kans. He died July 18, 1998.
Survivors include: one son, Keith and wife Harriett of Shawnee, Kans.; daughters Jo Ann and husband Lloyd Harris of Plains, Kans., Dolores Livesay of Guymon, Okla.; seven grandchildren, 15 great grand children and four great, great grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. June 19, 2000 at Kitch Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tom Wilkins presiding with assistance from Chaplain Judy Barnes. Burial will follow at Restlawn Cemetery.
Friends may call from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1-9 p.m. on Sunday. Family will be present to receive friends from 1-3 p.m. Sunday at Kitch Funeral Home.
