Hugo Omar Cabrera Torres
Vigil service for Hugo Omar Cabrera Torres, 22, of 1213 Mulberry St., was 8 p.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by Spanish rosary.
Funeral was to be 10:30 this morning at the church, with the Rev. Oreste Huerta officiating.
Burial was to follow in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Torres died Friday, May 26, 2000, in an automobile accident on I-70 near Goodland.
Born March 10, 1978, at El Salvador, he was the son of Manuel Cabrera and Ermelinda Torres.
A Garden City resident since 1995, moving from El Salvador, he was a maintenance worker for IBP for the past two years.
He attended St. Mary Catholic Church.
His hobbies were sports and playing basketball and soccer.
On March 20, 1999, he married Samantha K. Cruz at Garden City.
She survives.
He is also survived by a son, Xaiver Omar Torres, of the home; his mother, Garden City; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and one aunt.

Earnestine Burnett
CIMARRON -- Funeral for Earnestine Burnett, 81, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Burkhart's Gray County Funeral Chapel, Cimarron.
Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.
Mrs. Burnett died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at Central Kansas Medical Center, St. Joseph Campus, Larned.
She was born May 13, 1919, at Arkansas City, the daughter of Edward and Cora (Snodgrass) Hughes.
A longtime Cimarron resident, moving to Larned in 1998, she was a homemaker.
She also served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels at Cimarron.
On May 11, 1942, she married Raymond Burnett at Cimarron.
He died in October 1985. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Hughes; and a sister, Lucille Hughes.
Survivors include three sons, Raymond E. Burnett, Hutchinson, Richard Burnett, LaJunta, Colo., and Bob Burnett, Kinsley; two sisters, Margaret Marks, Dodge City, and Betty Hughes, Arizona; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association, in care of the funeral chapel.
Matilda 'Tillie' Whitehurst
Vigil service for Matilda "Tillie" Whitehurst, 85, will be 7 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, followed by Daughters of Isabella rosary.
Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker as celebrant.
Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Whitehurst died Monday, May 29, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born May 3, 1915, at Schoenchen, the daughter of Carl and Mary (Depperschmidt) Werth.
She grew up in Schoenchen and graduated from Schoenchen High School.
A longtime Garden City resident, she had lived in California for several years in the 1940s.
She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and Altar Society, was a religious education helper and a former 4-H leader.
On Aug. 16, 1939, she married Lynn E. Whitehurst at Garden City.
A homemaker, she had worked in the school lunch program for several years after her children were grown, and also did invisible reweaving and helped her husband upholster furniture.
She enjoyed sewing, playing cards, playing Yahtzee, crocheting, traveling and her family activities.
Her husband died Sept. 9, 1981. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Shirley Ann; three brothers, Paul Werth, Nick Werth and Frank Werth; and two sisters, Helen Siers and Julia Linenberger.
She is survived by four sons, David Whitehurst, Ronald Whitehurst and Gary Whitehurst, all of Garden City, and Fred Whitehurst, Littleton, Colo.; three daughters, Coleen Rupp, Holcomb, Mary Creeden and Sue Pearson, both of Garden City; a brother, Henry Werth, Schoenchen; three sisters, Mary Legge, Wichita, Tina Brannen, Long Beach, Calif., and Odelia Haselhorst, Hays; 24 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Mary School Endowment Fund, in care of the funeral home.
Dean H. Hager
SCOTT CITY -- Funeral for Dean H. Hager, 69, of Scott City, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Hutchins Funeral Chapel, Franklin, Neb., with the Rev. J.C. Browne officiating.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Franklin.
Mr. Hager died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at Franklin County Memorial Hospital in Franklin.
He was born April 18, 1931, on a farm north of Bloomington, Neb., the son of Donald and Verda A. (Strickert) Hager.
He attended Lone Star District No. 50, went to Wilcox High School for two years, graduated from Franklin High School in 1949, and attended electronics technical training school in Treasure Island, Calif.
A Scott City resident since 1958, Mr. Hager was a certified life insurance salesman for Modern Woodmen of America.
He later was an electronics technician, and then installed and serviced satellite dishes.
Mr. Hager was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Scott City, had been a little league coach and manager, and produced the annual Scott County Easter Pageant for many years.
A veteran of the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956.
On Oct. 27, 1962, he married Detta Snyder at Scott City.
They later divorced.
He is survived by two sons, Don Hager, Bartonville, Ill., and Mark Hager, Silver Spring, Md.; two brothers, Larry Hager, Topeka, and Frank Hager, Las Vegas; and four grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 8 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.
Shawn Michael Huelskamp
Rosary for Shawn Michael Huelskamp, 27, of Mount Hope, will be 8:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Andale.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Reinhard Eck officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Andale.
Mr. Huelskamp, who had numerous relatives in southwest Kansas, died Monday, May 29, 2000, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Mount Hope.
He was born May 31, 1972, at Wichita, the son of Gerald Alvin and Judith Elizabeth (Rau) Huelskamp.
A mechanic, he was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Andale.
He is survived by his parents, Mount Hope; four sisters, Renee Stankiewicz, Topeka, Rachelle Shiach, Crosby, Texas, Jenifer Cain, Mount Hope, and Vicki Sutton, Fort Irwin, Calif.; his grandmothers, Bernadine Huelskamp, Kingman, and Alma Rau, Wichita; and 11 nieces and nephews.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Wulf-Ast Mortuary, Mount Hope.
Memorials are suggested to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, in care of the mortuary.
Gladys Ruth Oliver
Johnson CITY -- Gladys Ruth Oliver, 77, died Monday, May 29, 2000, at her home in rural Stanton County.
Born June 25, 1922, in Grant County, she was the daughter of Stonewall and Viola Ruth (Carter) Oliver.
A 1940 graduate of Johnson High School, she was president of her senior class.
She moved to northeast Stanton County in 1937, where she farmed and ranched her entire life on the Rest Haven Ranch.
A member of the Stanton County and Grant County historical societies, she also served as president, secretary, treasurer and reporter of the Pleasant Hour Club.
She was preceded in death by two brothers. Survivors include a host of friends and neighbors.
Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Johnson City, with the Rev. Dave Kaufmann officiating.
