Viola Ruth Whetstone
HUGOTON -- Graveside service for Viola Ruth Whetstone, 94, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Hugoton Cemetery, with the Rev. Lee Skelton officiating.
Mrs. Whetstone died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home in Hugoton.
Born Aug. 4, 1905, at Pratt, she had been a Hugoton resident for 90 years, traveling there from Pratt in a covered wagon. A homemaker, she had worked as a nurse's aide at Hugoton Hospital and also had worked at Slim Browns Cafe. She was a member of First Christian Church and Church of Christ.
She and Olin Wiley "Cricket" Whetstone were married in 1927 at Clayton, N.M. He died in 1972. She was also preceded in death by a son, Norman Carl Whetstone; and two grandsons.
She is survived by three sons, Kenneth Gene Whetstone, Commerce City, Colo., Mickey Wiley Whetstone, Moscow, and Robert Allen Whetstone, Hugoton; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Paul's Funeral Home, Hugoton, is in charge of arrangements.
Candelario 'Candy' Ochoa Jr.
LAKIN -- Candelario "Candy" Ochoa Jr., 66, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
Born June 22, 1933, at Deerfield, to Candelario Sr. and Elsie (Salinas) Ochoa, he attended school in Sugar City and Ordway, Colo. He moved to Washington State, returned to Kansas in 1955, lived in Kingsdown for a year, moved to Leoti, and then moved to Lakin in 1961.
A farmer, he also did vehicle body work, and enjoyed trap shooting, golf and bowling. He was a member of Assembly of God Church in Lakin and the Lakin Gun Club.
On May 29, 1955, he married Betty Ruth Ansel at Raton, N.M. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Douglas Ochoa, Hoisington; four daughters, Martha Williams, Lexington, Ill., Rebecca Sparks, Platte City, Mo., Felicia Gosch, Lakin, and Kelly Roberts, Oklahoma City; seven brothers, Robert Ochoa, Mesa, Ariz., Cyrus Ochoa, Wenatchee, Wash., Manuel Ochoa, Grandberry, Texas, Ernest Ochoa, Perryton, Texas, Joe Ochoa, Coolidge, Moses Ochoa, Garden City, and Ronnie Ochoa, Stockton, Calif.; two sisters, Esther Becker and Liz Harris, both of Seattle; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter and a sister, Mary Esther Ochoa.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday at Assembly of God Church, Lakin, with Rafael Franco officiating.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.
Nancy Lee Mauzey
Nancy Lee (Blanchard) Mauzey, 59, Broomfield, Colo., died in her sleep Monday, May 8, 2000.
She was born Jan. 22, 1941, at Garden City, the daughter of Howard T. and Maxine (Morris) Blanchard. She graduated from Garden City High School in 1959 and from Kansas State University in 1963.
An interior decorator, she had worked in Denver until recent years, and was a member of Chapter X, P.E.O. She had been in poor health for two years and had recently been confined to a wheelchair.
Among survivors is her husband, Jack Mauzey, whom she married on June 11, 1981, at Denver.
At her request, she has been cremated and there will be no funeral or memorials.
Duane W. Hays
Duane W. Hays, 69, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at his home in Garden City.
Born Jan. 21, 1931, at Garden City, he was the son of Paul F. and Alma (Goss) Hays. A lifetime Garden City resident, he was a director and vice president of lending for Garden National Bank.
He received his bachelor's degree in agronomy from Kansas State University in 1957 and his master's degree in the Graduate School of Banking from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in the early 1970s.
Mr. Hays was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Noon Lions Club, American Legion, Broncbuster Athletic Association and the Iris Club, all at Garden City. He belonged to the Finney County Catbackers and the KSU Alumni Association, and served on the finance and other various church committees.
He was a former city commissioner, mayor and treasurer for the City of Garden City, had been involved with the Sister Cities organization, Tumbleweed Girl Scout Council, Finney County United Way and the Garden City Recreation Commission boards of directors, served as treasurer for the Salvation Army, and was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
On June 2, 1951, he married Mary Lou Waits at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Kelly Hays and Mark Hays, both of Garden City; a brother, Earle Hays, Wichita; a sister, Wanda Beltz, Willow Springs, Mo.; and three grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Revs. Janet Hernandez and Robert Cousins officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Max C. Engler Jr.
DEERFIELD -- Max C. Engler Jr., 77, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at his home in Kearny County.
He was born July 24, 1922, in Finney County, the son of Max Sr. and Bessie Matilda (Altus) Engler.
After attending English Hill Country School in Finney County, he began farming and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe. He returned to Finney County to farm after his discharge from the army.
On Feb. 6, 1949, he married Naomi May Koester at Ness City. They then moved to Kiowa County, Colorado for one year and moved to Garden City in 1950. In 1960, they moved to a farm in Finney County. They moved to the current farm in Kearny County in 1975.
A lifelong farmer in Finney and Kearny counties, Mr. Engler enjoyed collecting arrowheads in his earlier years and, in later years, he enjoyed his pets and reading history books. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church of Garden City.
His wife died Jan. 15, 1995. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Maxine Engler; and two brothers, Herman Engler and Duane Engler.
He is survived by two sons, Max Engler III, Deerfield, and Verlyn Engler, Golden, Colo.; three daughters, Janice Brady, Parsons, Luetta Engler and Charlene Engler, both of Deerfield; two brothers, William S. Engler, Garden City, and Ronald Engler, Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Neada Wheatley, Garden City; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Assembly of God Church, Garden City, with the Revs. Kent Anderson and Arnold Wheatley officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Lydia Heinitz Birzer
Lydia Heinitz Birzer, 84, of Dodge City and formerly of Garden City, died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.
She was born March 8, 1916, at Wilson, the daughter of George and Katherine Louise (Wunder) Heinitz.
On Sept. 18, 1937, she married Frank W. Birzer at Garden City. They lived here in the early years and moved to Dodge City in 1944. He died Oct. 12, 1984, at Dodge City. She was also preceded in death by a son, Kenny Heinitz; and a granddaughter.
Employed for many years as a restaurant cook, Mrs. Birzer had worked for the Gunsmoke Truck Stop cafe, the Cowtown Club and was a weekend cook for the Elks Lodge, all at Dodge City. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, the Large Print Group of the church, and the VFW Auxiliary, all at Dodge City.
She is survived by two daughters, Virginia Bierce, Mountain Home, Ark., and Debbie Setzkorn, Dodge City; two sons, Don Birzer, Dodge City, and Frank Birzer, Fort Dodge, Iowa; a sister, Elma Lais, Marion; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Dodge City, with the Rev. Randall Jahnke officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City. Memorials are suggested to the Holy Cross Church Remodeling Fund, in care of the funeral home.
Lloyd Eugene Neyer
LEOTI -- Former Wichita County sheriff Lloyd Eugene Neyer, 73, died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Oct. 8, 1926, at Leoti, the son of Gillies and Sylvia Jean (Gopert) Neyer.
A lifetime Leoti resident, he was owner and operator of Neyer Garage. From 1972 through 1976, he served as sheriff.
Mr. Neyer was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the VFW, both at Leoti, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
On Oct. 3, 1954, he married Marilyn Hubbard at Leoti. She died July 7, 1998, in Scott County.
He is survived by a son, Joseph Neyer, Dodge City; three daughters, Kathy Koudelka, Englewood, Colo., Tammy Neyer, Dodge City, and Cindy Neyer, Angola, Ind.; a sister, Jean Barr, St. John; and 10 grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti, with the Rev. Kathleen Dooley officiating. Inurnment will be in Leoti Cemetery.

Karin Ann Simmons
CIMARRON -- Vigil service for Karin Ann Simmons, 27, of Cimarron, was to be 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Ingalls. Funeral was to be 10 this morning at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr officiating. Burial was to be in Cimarron Cemetery.
Mrs. Simmons died Friday, May 12, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
Born April 19, 1973, at Dodge City, she was the daughter of Clarence and Eva (Isenbart) Lee. She grew up in Dodge City, graduated from Dodge City High School in 1991 and also graduated from Dodge City Community College.
A homemaker, she was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.
On Oct. 24, 1992, she married Roger Simmons at Ingalls and they lived in Cimarron. He survives. Other survivors are her parents, Cimarron; and two brothers, Joe Lee, Emporia, and Mike Lee, Wichita.
Memorials are suggested to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or the Cimarron Library, both in care of Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City.
