Norma Lee Koppel

Norma Lee Koppel, 75, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.

She was born Jan. 31, 1925, in Missouri, the daughter of John and Mildred (Dykes) Duren. When she was a child, the family moved to the Garden City area and she attended rural Finney County schools.

A homemaker, Mrs. Koppel also worked for several years at 5 Points Cafe. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and enjoyed drawing and playing bingo.

On Aug. 26, 1939, she married Joseph Koppel Sr. at Lakin. He survives. She is also survived by a son, Joseph Koppel Jr., Garden City; a daughter, Jolene Morgan, Holcomb; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Reiter and Mary Babcock; and a sister-in-law, Marie Koppel.

Rosary will be 8 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.

Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.

Leona I. Hogg

SCOTT CITY -- Funeral for Leona I. Hogg, 94, of Minneapolis, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church, Minneapolis, with the Rev. Gene Langhofer officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Minneapolis.

Mrs. Hogg died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at the Minneapolis Good Samaritan Center.

She was born Aug. 8, 1905, on a farm east of Minneapolis. A lifetime resident of the Minneapolis area, she was a homemaker. She gave piano lessons for several years and played with the Marvin Prochaska Band for 32 years.

Mrs. Hogg was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Business and Professional Women, Friendly Folks of the Golden Wheel Senior Center and the American Association of Retired Persons, was a charter member of the Jolly Janes Club and volunteered at the Minneapolis Good Samaritan Center for many years.

She is survived by three sons, Wilbur M. Hogg Jr., Salina, Donald E. Hogg, Wichita, and Rodney R. Hogg, Scott City; a daughter, Linda L. Carson, Minneapolis; a niece, Janice Mathews of Salina, whom she raised; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur M. Hogg Sr., in 1969; and an infant son, Edwin L. Hogg.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Shields Funeral Home, Minneapolis. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.

Bernadine Grasser

Vigil service for Bernadine Grasser, 91, of Spearville, will be 7:30 tonight at St. John's The Baptist Catholic Church, Spearville. Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Robert Schremmer officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery, Spearville.

Mrs. Grasser died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at her home.

She was born Feb. 13, 1909, at Windthorst, the daughter of Fred and Kathryn (Tecklenburg) Temaat.

On Oct. 21, 1931, she married Henry R. Grasser at Windthorst. They lived on a farm in the St. Mary area in Hodgeman County until moving to a farm five miles north of Spearville in Hodgeman County in 1960. They moved into Spearville in 1966.

Mrs. Grasser was a member of St. John The Baptist Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella. A homemaker, she loved to garden, raise flowers, and baby-sit for children. She also enjoyed playing cards and bingo, and taking people to the doctor and grocery shopping.

Her husband died Oct. 16, 1972. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by two sons, Gerald Grasser, Garden City, and Leo Grasser, Wright; three daughters, Louise Lampe, Spearville, Elvera Lorenzen, Hutchinson, and Margaret Ruder, Grand Forks, N.D.; five sisters, Elizabeth "Toots" Beller, Spearville, Mary Boeckmon, Okeene, Okla., Anna Kohler, Okarche, Okla., Sister Lucida Temaat, Wichita, and Pat Vogel, Wright; 19 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to Arrowhead West of Dodge City, in care of Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City.

James E. 'Jim' Binns

SCOTT CITY -- James E. "Jim" Binns, 67, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at the Heart Hospital in Austin, Texas.

He was born Aug. 1, 1932, at Scott City, the son of Samuel and Inez (Needles) Binns.

A lifetime resident of Scott City, he worked in Arnett's Bakery when he was 8, washing dishes and later baking. He then worked for Investors Diversified Services for several years before joining the post office as a rural mail carrier, a position he held until his retirement.

Mr. Binns was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a 32nd Degree Mason, and belonged to the Rural Carriers Association, Larned Round Dance Club and Scott City Square Dance Club.

On April 8, 1950, he married Norma J. Dvorak at Clayton, N.M. She survives. Other survivors are a son, Tony Binns, Leoti; a daughter, Diane LaGesse, Newton; two brothers, Clifford "Pete" Binns and Martin "Sandy" Binns, both of Scott City; two sisters, Jo Ellen Wimp, Oswego, and Betty Jeffries, Winfield; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Allen Lee Binns; and a sister, Nancy Gray.

Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Duane Kessler officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Visitation hours are from 5 to 9 tonight and 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials to the James Binns Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Elizabeth Elora Marine

DODGE CITY -- Elizabeth Elora Marine, Dodge City, died May 6, 2000, at the Manor of the Plains Nursing Home.

Funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at Copeland United Methodist Church, Copeland, the Rev. Bill Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will be at Copeland Cemetery.

Mrs. Marine was born July 30, 1914, at Winfield, the daughter of Oscar Owen Burdette and Nancy Ella Vandruff. She spent her early years of life in the Ponca City, Okla., area. After losing her parents, she and her sister were raised by relatives in Colorado and California. She graduated from Huntington Beach High School.

After attending college in Texas, she attended college at Southwestern College in Winfield and received her teaching degree from there. She taught at Goddard, Bloom, Copeland and Montezuma.

She married Donald R. Marine on Nov. 1, 1940, in Bartlesville, Okla. He preceded her in death on Nov. 29, 1986. After their marriage, they lived in Copeland. Mrs. Marine moved to Dodge City in 1995. She also was preceded in death by one son, Allen, one brother and a sister.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Burch, Holcomb, and a son, Stan Marine, Copeland.

Mrs. Marine was active in various clubs in Copeland. She also was very involved in the activities of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of Copeland United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Friday Afternoon Club, all of Copeland, Senior Friends of Dodge City, Pride of Life Senior Center of Sublette, SKAVI of Dodge City, Kansas Retired Teachers Association and a 53-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Copeland.

Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City.

Memorials to Renal Care Group of Dodge City Dialysis Center or the donor's choice.

Doris L. Miller

Funeral for Doris L. Miller, 80, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church, Cimarron, with Dr. Dan Ferguson officiating. Burial will be in Cimarron Cemetery.

Mrs. Miller died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.

Born June 17, 1919, in Gray County, she was the daughter of Joseph S. and Ada M. (Hungate) Lupton.

A 1944 graduate of Kansas State University, she earned her dietitian's degree and then served as an intern at Montifiore Hospital in New York City after which she became a registered dietitian. She worked at Baylor Hospital, Dallas; Stormont Vail Hospital, Topeka; and Veterans Administration Hospital, Milwaukee, retiring in 1978.

Mrs. Miller had been a Garden City resident for several years, moving from Cimarron. She was a member of Cimarron United Methodist Church, and a life member of Order of the Eastern Star and alumni organizations of Kansas State University.

On June 8, 1953, she married Cecil L. Miller at Dodge City. He survives. Other survivors are a sister, Catherine T. Davis, Garden City; two nephews; and two nieces. She was preceded in death by a sister, Vida Lupton.

Visitation hours are from noon until service time Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Kansas State Scholarship Fund, both in care of Burkharts Gray County Funeral Chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.
