Cletus J. Simon Jr.
SYRACUSE -- Rosary vigil service for Cletus J. Simon Jr., 51, will be 7 p.m. MST Thursday at St. Raphael Catholic Church, Syracuse. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. MST Friday at the church, with the Rev. Mike Helms officiating. Burial will follow in Syracuse Cemetery, with full military services conducted by the U.S. Army, Fort Riley.
Mr. Simon died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Hamilton County.
He was born Nov. 18, 1948, at Garden City, the son of Cletus A. and Alberta "Bert" Simon. He attended high school at Syracuse, graduating in 1966, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Vietnam War.
In 1973, he married Nyla Louk.
A lifetime resident of Syracuse, Mr. Simon was engaged in farming, enjoyed fishing, auctions, collecting antiques and hunting, and was known to frequent the dog races. He was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church and was a longtime Moose member.
He is survived by a son, Matt Simon, Syracuse; three daughters, Melissa Murdock, Beaver, Utah, Terra Rush, Guam, and Lacey Simon, Syracuse; five brothers, John Simon, Don Simon, Dave Simon, Larry Simon and Keith Simon, all of Syracuse; four sisters, Barbara Standley and Connie Mai, both of Garden City, Julie Parks and Nancy Simon, both of Syracuse; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a nephew, Eric Mai of Garden City, in 1997.

Jim Douglas Melgar
Jim Douglas Melgar, the three-month-old son of Ricardo Rene III and Jazmin (Sanchez) Melgar of 629 Olive St., died Monday, May 1, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Jan. 20, 2000, at Long Beach, Calif.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Ricardo R. Melgar IV, of the home; his grandparents, Delfino and Olivia Sanchez, Compton, Calif., Ricardo Melgar II, Pomona, Calif., and Digna Melgar, Southgate, Calif.; his great-grandfathers, both of Mexico; and several aunts and uncles.
Graveside service will be 10 a.m. Friday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Richard Perez officiating. Friends may meet at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, at 9:30 a.m. Friday to go to the cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Tim Knoll
Tim Knoll, 71, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Feb. 4, 1929, at St. Peter, the son of Gottfried and Barbara (Billinger) Knoll.
He worked with his father on the family farm until 1950 when the Korean conflict occurred and he was called back to active duty with the U.S. Marine Corps. He returned to the farm in 1951 and then moved to Garden City in 1952 where he served as the city clerk for 33 years.
Mr. Knoll was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council No. 2795. He loved working in his yard, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and he enjoyed golfing and bowling in his earlier days.
On July 15, 1950, he married Edith Bond at Buffalo, Okla. She survives. Other survivors are two sons, Gary D. Knoll, Garden City, and Ken L. Knoll, Burnsville, Minn.; five daughters, Dora J. Grilliot, Syracuse, Mona J. Andersen, Topeka, Joyce M. Barnes and Pam S. Brungardt, both of Garden City, and Judy A. Claar, Deerfield; four sisters, Bridget Brungardt and Syl Sauer, both of St. Peter, Barbara Solze, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Dorothy Sauer, Wichita; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters, Eleanor Coen, Leona Miller, Valeria Comito and Frances Earll.
Vigil service will be 7:30 p.m. Friday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with military graveside rites conducted.
Visitation hours are from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Center for Basic Cancer Research, the American Heart Association or the church, all in care of the funeral home.
Ray Eugene 'Gene' Jones
Memorial service for Ray Eugene "Gene" Jones, 83, a former Garden City resident, was to be 11 this morning at Faith Lutheran Church, Mission.
Mr. Jones died Saturday, April 29, 2000, at his home in Overland Park.
He was born Aug. 8, 1917, at Alva, Okla., the son of C. Ray and Ada M. Jones. He was engaged in farming and construction for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Hilda; a son, Bernard Gale Jones, Shawnee; a daughter, Dona De Smith, Spokane, Wash.; a brother, Daryl Jones, Portland, Ore.; a sister, Doris Ogletree, Kingfisher, Okla.; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Lanny Ray Jones.
Memorials are suggested to Faith Lutheran Church, 67th and Roe, Mission, KS; or to Hospice, in care of St. Luke's Shawnee Mission Health System.
Charter Funerals/Kansas Chapel, Merriam, was in charge of arrangements.
Alma Reita Graves
HEALY -- Funeral for Alma Reita Graves, 89, will be 3 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church, Healy, with the Revs. Randy Jellison-Knock and Keith Schadel officiating. Burial will be in Healy Cemetery.
Mrs. Graves died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.
She was born Aug. 26, 1910, at Alexander, the daughter of Royal Earl and Gladys Rose (Monroe) Coddington.
A Healy resident since 1941, moving from Dighton where she graduated high school, she was a homemaker. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, American Cancer Society, Eastern Star and EHU, and was a Sunday school teacher and 4-H leader.
On Feb. 18, 1931, she married Dale Graves at Ness City. He died July 28, 1977, at Scott City. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
She is survived by three sons, J. Darel Graves, Goodland, Gary L. Graves, Ashville, N.C., and B. Kent Graves, Healy; a brother, Cecil Coddington, Burdett; a sister, Faye Mostrom, Burdett; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Ida Marie Christy
SCOTT CITY -- Ida Marie Christy, 76, of Commerce City, Colo., died Monday, May 1, 2000, at Denver.
A homemaker, she was born May 23, 1923, at Chitwood, Mo., the daughter of John A. and Agnes L. (Jones) Reed.
She is survived by three children, LaVon E. Rippetoe, Judy M. Christy and Walter L. Christy; a sister, Ruby E. Kelley; a brother, Lloyd J. Reed; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell A. Christy; a daughter, Lue Ella G. Christy; two brothers, George R. Ware and Oscar A. Reed; two sisters, Anna M. Heddleston and Lily M. Smith; and a great-grandchild.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Highland Mortuary, Thornton, Colo. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Catherine Amelia Steinbach
Former Garden City resident Catherine Amelia Steinbach, 86, a longtime resident of Guymon, Okla., died Wednesday, May 3, 2000, at Memorial Hospital of Texas County.
Born Nov. 24, 1913, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, to Anna and John Klaus, she came to the United States in 1915 and became a U.S. citizen on Sept. 15, 1965.
On Sept. 24, 1946, she married John M. Steinbach at Garden City. They resided in the Garden City area before moving to Guymon in 1968.
Mrs. Steinbach was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church and enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, music and reading.
Her husband died Feb. 29, 1984. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Tony Klaus, Johnny Klaus, Mike Klaus and Alex Klaus.
She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ann Steinbach, Guymon, and Betty Jean Lehr, Olive Branch, Miss.; a sister, Rose Schiffelbein, Garden City; a sister-in-law, Goldie Klaus, Rolla, Mo.; and a granddaughter.
Prayer vigil will be 5:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Guymon, with the Revs. Scott Adams and James Jacobson officiating.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Revs. James A. Baker, John Vrana and Scott Adams as celebrants. Burial will follow in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon.
