Violet D. Peck
HEALY -- Funeral for Violet D. Peck, 76, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Healy, with the Rev. Randy Jellison-Knock officiating. Burial will be in Healy Cemetery.
Mrs. Peck died Saturday, April 1, 2000, at Ste. Genevieve County Memorial Hospital in Ste. Genevieve, Mo.
Born Dec. 27, 1923, at Ulysses, she was the daughter of the Rev. Mehlon and Era Mae (Fitch) Markwell. As her father was a United Methodist minister, she lived in several towns in western Kansas and Oklahoma when she was growing up. She graduated from high school at Long Island and then attended Southwestern College before moving to Healy where she taught for one year.
On Feb. 15, 1943, she married Lloyd L. Peck at Healy. After their marriage, she helped her husband with the farming and was a homemaker. They moved to Tribune in 1978 and to Ste. Genevieve in 1995.
Mrs. Peck was a member of the United Methodist Church of Healy and the United Methodist Women, and was church choir director for many years. She enjoyed playing bridge, refinishing furniture and sewing.
She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Mary Lu Koch, Ste. Genevieve; three sisters, Lorene Mumma, Dighton, Berttie Jefferies, Wichita, and Lois Dean Pike, Sharon Springs; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by a son, Mehlon Dee Peck; and a sister, Irene Stewart.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Lee A. Litzenberger
Funeral for Lee A. Litzenberger, 76, of Harper, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Argonia, with the Rev. Daryl Bahn officiating. Burial will be in Harper Cemetery.
Mr. Litzenberger died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Harper.
He was born Nov. 10, 1923, at LaCrosse, the son of Alex and Elizabeth (Wilhelm) Litzenberger. A retired insurance agent, he was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Anthony Golf Club.
On April 1, 1947, he married Isabelle M. Peach at Wichita. She died Feb. 28, 1996. He married Moette (Brooks) Smith on Dec. 14, 1996, at Argonia. She survives.
He is also survived by a son, Brian Litzenberger, Garden City; a daughter, Jan Kindel, Carthage, Mo.; two sisters, Leila Snyder, of Albert, and Lois Stull, Hutchinson; four grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of Elliott Funeral Home, 1406 Ash, Harper, KS 67058.
Dallas C. Enslow
Dallas C. Enslow, 69, died Friday, March 31, 2000, at the Cancer Treatment Center in Tulsa, Okla.
He was born Feb. 5, 1931, at Kendall, the son of Phil Hardin and Ruby Garnet (Wiatt) Enslow.
Mr. Enslow had been a resident of Garden City since 1948, moving from Lakin, where he graduated from high school. He was a manager at Cash & Carry Lumber and a volunteer firefighter for 32 years.
He was a member of Church of the Brethren, where he also served as deacon, and was a former member of the Optimist Club and the chamber of commerce. He enjoyed woodworking and his family, was a volunteer at the historical museum in Garden City, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict, serving in the 176th Field Artillery Battalion.
On Aug. 5, 1951, he married Virginia Williamson at Lakin. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Kenneth Enslow, Sterling, Colo., and Neil Enslow, Canon City, Colo.; two daughters, Julie Aichlmayr, Helena, Mont., and Kathleen Whiting, Canon City; two brothers, Roy Enslow, Canon City, and Leonard Enslow, Lakin; two sisters, Twila Woods, Lakin, and Lavesta Binder, Colby; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Leslie.
A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Church of the Brethren, Garden City, with the Rev. Gary Meeks officiating. Private family burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are to Church of the Brethren or the Cancer Treatment Center of Tulsa, both in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Adam J. Roth
SATANTA -- Knights of Columbus rosary for Adam J. Roth, 89, of Liberal, will be 7 tonight at Miller Chapel, Liberal. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Liberal. Officiants will be the Rev. James J. "Jake" Roth, his brother from Claflin, and the Rev. Henry Hildebrandt.
Mr. Roth died Monday, April 3, 2000, at the Satanta Long Term Care Unit.
He was born April 26, 1910, at Buenas Aires, Argentina, South America, the son of Joseph and Christine (Schaefer) Roth. The family came to the United States when he was young, living in Topeka in 1913 and later residing in Julesburg, Colo., Holcomb and Deerfield before moving to a farm northwest of Plains.
Mr. Roth was a millwright for Light Grain & Milling for 33 years, retiring in 1976. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, both at Liberal.
On Oct. 30, 1934, he married Caroline M. Dreitz at Plains. She died March 12, 1979.
In addition to his brother, he is survived by two daughters, Irene Pepper, Liberal, and Esther Kinney, Oklahoma City; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Miller Mortuary, Liberal. The family suggests that memorials be made for Masses in Mr. Roth's memory.
C. Maynard Knief
C. Maynard Knief, 80, a 60-year resident of Garden City, died Monday, April 3, 2000, in Phoenix.
He was born March 30, 1920, in Haskell County, the son of Conrad and Hazel Knief. The family moved to Garden City in 1926. He attended Hutchinson Elementary School and Garden City Junior High, graduated from Garden City High School in 1937, from Garden City Junior College in 1939, and from the University of Kansas in 1948.
Mr. Knief opened his accounting office in 1948, becoming a certified public accountant in 1955. Over the years he had offices on Main Street and Seventh Street. For 32 years he headed his own firm and then merged that business with Lewis, Hooper and Dick, CPAs, where he was a partner until his retirement in 1985.
He served Garden City as the first chairman of the Board of Trustees of Garden City Junior College and as president of the Chamber of Commerce and the Lions Club. He was in the Army Air Corps from September 1942 to June 1947, serving as a captain in the Medical Administrative Corps.
He and his wife of more than 51 years, Mary E. Knief, retired to Green Valley, Ariz., where they both were active in the community and served the homeowners' associations, which were the only form of city government there. At the time of his death, he was living in a health care facility for Alzheimer's patients in Phoenix, where his daughter, Claudia, and her family were able to visit him often.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary Kay Knief, Austin, Texas, and Claudia Sassaman, Phoenix; three brothers, Arnold, Sublette, Chet, Richardson, Texas, and Duane, Garland, Texas; and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his wife, in January 1997; and his older brother, Dwight.
Funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Green Valley Mortuary. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association, 1028 E. McDowell, Phoenix, AZ 85006, indicating the gift should be used for research; or to Huger Mercy Living Center, 2345 W. Orangewood, Phoenix, AZ 85021.
H. Tom Ungles
SATANTA -- H. Tom Ungles, 74, of Satanta, died Monday, April 3, 2000, at Satanta District Hospital.
He was born April 25, 1925, at Hutchinson, the son of Thomas G. and Nora E. (Eales) Ungles. When he was an infant, the family moved to Satanta.
After attending Fort Hays State University, he went to work for the newspaper in Goodland, later worked for the Hi-Plains Journal at Dodge City, and wrote the "Satanta Passing Show" in the Haskell County newspaper. He was office manager for Ashland Oil Co., Satanta, until his retirement.
Mr. Ungles was a member of the United Methodist Church of Satanta, a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 406 at Satanta and Hugoton, a 32-degree Mason-Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, and was a life member of the Kansas State Historical Society.
He also belonged to the Haskell County Historical Society and S.W. Royalty Owners, and served as the bank director for many years at State Bank of Satanta. Known for his quick-witted sense of humor, he valued his family members and friends, and had cared for his elderly parents until their deaths, as well as caring for other relatives.
He is survived by an aunt, Lou Ethel Ungles of Satanta and several cousins including Delaine Stalker and Bud Ungles, both of Satanta.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Satanta, with the Rev. Larry Myers officiating. Masonic graveside services will be conducted by Masonic Lodge, Hugoton, with burial in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.
Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Thursday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to the church or the Satanta Long Term Care Unit, and may be left at Shopping Stop True-Value at Satanta or mailed to the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
