James Doyle Carter
HOLCOMB -- A memorial service for James Doyle Carter, 60, of Holcomb, is planned for 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Southern Baptist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Randy Caddell officiating.
Funeral was 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Brashears Funeral Home in Arkansas, with the Rev. Dearl Wilson officiating. Burial was to follow in Lower Campground Cemetery.
Mr. Carter died Friday, March 3, 2000, at St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.
Born Oct. 7, 1939, at Marble, Ark., he was the son of Vernon George and Sibyl Sue (Holt) Carter.
He was a coal handler at Sunflower Electric Power Corp., Holcomb, for 19 years, and was a member of Metalton United Baptist Church.
He is survived by four sons, James Carter, Rogers, Ark., Kent Carter, Springdale, Ark., Justin Carter and Jared Carter, both of Garden City; two daughters, Angie McGuire, of Rogers, and Jessica Atherton, Manhattan; his fiancee, Jullie Dale, and her children, Danielle Dale and Cody Dale, all of Holcomb; his mother, Kingston, Ark.; four brothers, Virgil Carter, Jerrell, Texas, Loy Carter, Springdale, Joe Carter, Kingston, and Guy Ray Carter, Winfield; two sisters, Hazel Hughes, Elkins, Ark., and Donna Kemper, Wichita; and seven grandchildren.
Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, is handling local arrangements.
Erma Liggett
SCOTT CITY -- Funeral for Erma Liggett, 97, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Mrs. Liggett died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
She was born June 6, 1902, in Scott County, the daughter of Harley Emer and Anna Wilson Piper Nicholson.
Mrs. Liggett was a lifetime resident of Scott City and had worked for more than 22 years at the McDonald's Clothing Store in Scott City. A homemaker, she was a member of First Christian Church.
On Oct. 25, 1920, she married Leland Liggett at Scott City. He died Jan. 15, 1988, at Scott City. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Nicholson.
She is survived by a niece, Linda Lang, and two great-nieces, Jenny Lang and Stacy Lang, all of Hays; and several friends including her close friends, Hap and Virgie Silvey of Scott City.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 9 tonight and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church or the VIP Center, both in care of the funeral home.
Aaron J. Murray
Aaron J. Murray, 84, of Mankato, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at Jewell County Hospital in Mankato.
He was born Oct. 12, 1915, at Lovewell, the son of James and Nettie (Diamond) Murray. He graduated from the eighth grade at Montrose and from auctioneer school at Mason City, Iowa.
A farmer and auctioneer, he had lived in the Montrose and Mankato areas. He was a member of the Montrose School Board and was president of Jewell County Farm Bureau for 13 years.
On Sept. 3, 1937, he married Charlotte Fullerton at Mankato. She survives. Other survivors are two sons, Carl Dennis Murray, Rifle, Colo., and Dwight Russell Murray, Mankato; two daughters, Joanne Freeman, Mankato, and Susan Hoffman, Topeka; two brothers, Merlin "Jerry" Murray, Mankato, and Charles "Jock" Murray, Garden City; two sisters, Virginia Hansen and Eunice Hughes, both of Mankato; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Harmony United Methodist Church, Mankato, with the Rev. Thaddeus Hinkle officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Mankato.
Visitation hours are from 3 to 9 tonight and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Melby Mortuary, Mankato. Memorials to be determined by the family at a later date may be sent in care of the mortuary, 402 N. High St., Mankato, KS 66956-1710.
Elsie Marie Redger
CIMARRON -- Elsie Marie Redger, 70, of Montezuma and formerly of Cimarron, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, in Finney County after a sudden illness.
She was born Dec. 21, 1929, in Gray County, the daughter of Henry and Julia (Unruh) Redger.
A lifetime resident of the area, she was a cook at Ingalls School for 20 years and was a member of Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Cimarron. She had been a resident of Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, since December 1997.
She is survived by two brothers, Henry Redger Jr., Montezuma, and Donald Redger, Ingalls; two brothers-in-law, Marvin Schmidt and Tom Koehn, both of Ulysses; a sister-in-law, Bernice Redger, Montezuma; and several nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces. She was preceded in death by two brothers, James Redger and Ivan Redger; three sisters, Lois Redger, Helen Schmidt and Bernice Ann Koehn; and two nephews.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Cimarron. Vernon Giesbrecht, Stuart Jantzen and Keith Ensz, ministers, will officiate. Burial will follow in Cimarron Cemetery.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Montezuma Funeral Home, and from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday at Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Cimarron. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.
Ruth Marie Irwin
Ruth Marie Irwin, 59, died Friday, March 31, 2000, at her home in Garden City.
She was born April 24, 1940, at Hoxie, the daughter of Cleo Earnest and Helen Berniece (Femple) William, and attended Hoxie schools.
On June 1, 1957, she married Tom E. Irwin at Hoxie. They moved to Garden City in 1965. A homemaker, her life revolved around her family activities.
She is survived by her husband; two sons, Stuart Irwin and Shaun Irwin, both of Garden City; four daughters, Tina McMichael and Renie Irwin, both of Garden City, Veronica Brewster, Fletcher, Okla., and Brenda Streckfus, Pierceville; three brothers, Randy William, Doyle William and Calvin William, all of Garden City; a sister, Connie Gallaway, Garden City; 17 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Earnest Cleo William; and a sister, Julia William.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Jonathan Hansen officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from noon to 8 tonight and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, in care of the funeral home.
Lloyd W. Towns
Lloyd W. Towns, 74, of Liberal, died Sunday, April 2, 2000, at the Liberal Good Samaritan Center.
He was born Feb. 28, 1926, at Isabel, the son of Harry W. and Sadie (Ford) Towns.
A longtime resident of Tyrone, Okla., before moving to Liberal, he was a retired truck driver for Nichols Fluid. He was a member of the VFW Lane Day Post No. 3166 at Liberal and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On March 16, 1947, he married Barbara Ryan at Syracuse. He married Christine Lawellin on Dec. 23, 1980, at Beaver, Okla. She died June 30, 1991. He was also preceded in death by his father and a sister, Opal.
He is survived by a son, David Towns, Liberal; two daughters, Sherry Olney, Pelion, S.C., and Carla Lanford, Leesville, S.C.; two half brothers, Dale Towns and Delmar Towns, both of Garden City; a half sister, Christy Barnett, Norman, Okla.; his stepmother, Alice Jones, Lamar, Colo.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kitch Funeral Home Chapel, Liberal, with the Rev. Keith Bryant officiating. Burial will be in Tyrone Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 9 tonight, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Liberal Good Samaritan Center, in care of the funeral home.
Thomas D. Spencer
Funeral for Thomas D. Spencer, 77, of Dodge City, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Burkhart Funeral Chapel, Dodge City, with the Rev. James Hossler officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Dodge City, with full military rites conducted by VFW Post 1714.
Mr. Spencer died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
He was born Nov. 1, 1922, at McRae, Ark., the son of Charles William and Grace Ann (Crisco) Spencer.
A Dodge City resident since 1953, moving from Arkansas, he retired in April 1987 as a battalion chief from the Dodge City Fire Department after 32 years of service.
Mr. Spencer taught CPR and first aid for the American Red Cross, was a guitar and fiddle player and crafter, and entertained the residents of many area nursing homes.
He was a member of Howard Gotschall VFW Post 1714, American Legion, Kansas Oldtime Fiddlers Association-White Woman Basin Chapter, Ford and Gray County Jamborees, and various local bands including the Country Gentlemen, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
On May 16, 1942, he married Ida Mae Jones at McRae. She died Oct. 3, 1995. He was also preceded in death by a son, James; twin daughters, Helen Mae and Ellen Fay Spencer; and a brother, Neal Spencer.
Survivors are a son, Charles Spencer, Dodge City; a brother, Mabern E. Spencer, Wichita; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
