Virgil Roy 'Buck' Good
Virgil Roy "Buck" Good, 79, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at his home in El Dorado.
He was born June 15, 1920, at Brownfield, Texas, the son of Milton Paul and Carrie Lee (Kyle) Good. The seventh of eight children, he soon acquired the name of "Buck" or "Buckie" from an older sister who couldn't say "little brother" and instead said "little Buckie," which he was known as for several years, finally becoming "Buck."
He graduated from Dickens High School in Bronte, Texas, in 1939 and served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 to 1945.
On Aug. 8, 1948, he married Joy Jackson at Lubbock, Texas. They soon moved to Ashland, where they farmed. In 1959, they moved to Beaver, Okla., where he worked as a pumper for Ashland Oil, retiring April 15, 1983. In 1996, they moved to El Dorado. She died Dec. 5, 1996.
He is survived by a son, Kyle Good, a former Garden City resident now living in El Dorado; a daughter, Levell Good, Golden, Colo.; a brother, G.W. Good, Moline; and three grandchildren.
Service will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Beaver United Methodist Church. Memorials are suggested to Beaver Senior Citizens or the church, or Bradford Memorial Library in El Dorado, all in care of Carlson Funeral Home, 200 S. Star, El Dorado, KS 67042.
Ubaldo Rafael 'Junior' Cruz
Funeral for Ubaldo Rafael "Junior" Cruz, 17, of 4101 E. Highway 50, Lot 536, was to be 11 this morning at La Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana, Garden City, with the Rev. Richard Perez officiating. Burial was to follow in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Cruz died Friday, March 10, 2000, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident on Rural Route 150, Jennie Barker Road in Garden City.
He was born Oct. 11, 1982, at Chihuahua, Mexico, the son of José and Ramona (Herrera) Cruz.
A Garden City resident since June 1995, moving from Tucumcari, N.M., he was a junior at Garden City High School, worked as a part-time cashier at Country Corner and was a member of La Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana. His hobbies were music and playing basketball.
He is survived by his parents, two brothers, Alfred Cruz and Andres Cruz, and two sisters, Elizabeth Cruz and Vanessa Cruz, all of the home; and his grandparents, Rafael and Socorro Ponce De Leon Atilano, Chihuahua, and Elvira Castruita Cruz, Zacatecas, Mexico.
Memorials to the Ubaldo R. Cruz Memorial Fund may be sent in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.
Vera Laura Woods
LEOTI -- Funeral for Vera Laura Woods, 89, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church, Leoti, with the Revs. Susan Charest-Wickiser and Paul McNall officiating. Burial will follow in Beulah Cemetery
in rural Wichita County.
Mrs. Woods died Saturday, March 11, 2000, at Hamilton County Extended Care Facility in Syracuse.
She was born Sept. 12, 1910, in Wichita County, the daughter of Perley E. and Lillian M. (Weaver) Metheney. A homemaker, she had been a lifetime resident of Wichita County and was a member of the United Methodist Church at Leoti.
On Jan. 21, 1937, she married Kenneth Woods in Wichita County. He died May 3, 1996, at Syracuse. She was also preceded in death by a sister and two brothers.
She is survived by a son, Duane Woods, Leoti; a daughter, Evelyn Florquist, Syracuse; and five grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Leoti. Memorials are to the church or Hamilton County Extended Care Facility, both in care of the funeral home.
Alta Elizabeth Lewis
SYRACUSE -- Alta Elizabeth Lewis, 97, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Hamilton County Extended Care in Syracuse.
She was born Sept. 20, 1902, in Scott County, the daughter of Albert "Bert" and Sophie (Curtis) Finkenbinder. She attended school in Scott County.
A Hamilton County resident since 1918, she was a farm wife and homemaker, and belonged to First Christian Church. She enjoyed various hobbies including assembling and dressing dolls, crocheting, painting pictures and numerous woodworking projects for her grandchildren.
In 1926, she married William G. Lewis at Lamar, Colo. He died in 1986. She was also preceded in death by an infant son; a son, Donald, in 1972; three brothers; and three sisters.
She is survived by a son, Duane Lewis, Garden City; a brother, Albert Finkenbinder, Wichita; a sister, Lena Molz, Syracuse; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. MST Monday at First Christian Church, Syracuse, with Bruce Sneed officiating. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery.
Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MST today, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MST Sunday and 9 to 10 a.m. MST Monday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Ethel Ida McGraw
Ethel Ida McGraw, 86, who had numerous relatives throughout southwest Kansas, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at Santa Rosa, Calif.
A native of Pueblo, Colo., she loved to cook for her family and friends. In her early years, she loved ranching and helped support the family ranch. Later in life, she enjoyed gardening.
She is survived by a son, Robert S. McGraw, Santa Rosa; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob H.D. McGraw.
There will be no formal services. Private burial is planned in Pleasant Hills Memorial Park, Sebastopol, Calif.
Daniels Chapel of the Roses, Santa Rosa, is in charge of arrangements.
Dennis Lee Henry
SYRACUSE -- Funeral for Dennis Lee Henry, 63, will be 2 p.m. MST Saturday at First Christian Church, Syracuse, with Bruce Sneed officiating. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery.
Mr. Henry died Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.
He was born July 8, 1936, at Syracuse, the son of Guy and Nellie (Curtis) Henry. He attended school at Syracuse, graduating in 1954.
A lifetime resident of Syracuse, he worked as the elevator manager at Irsik & Doll, retiring in 1999. He was a member of First Christian Church, enjoyed bowling and was a longtime member of the Tuesday Night Book Club.
On April 10, 1955, he married Beverly J. Staats at Syracuse. She survives. Other survivors are a son, Rick Henry, Kingman; two daughters, Cindy Kellogg, Chattanooga, Tenn., and Lori Elder, Garden City; three brothers, Ralph Henry, Craig, Colo., Fred Henry, Gunnison, Colo., and Raymond Henry, Syracuse; three sisters, Edna Wells, Syracuse, Erma Hermes, Canon City, Colo., and Virginia Wells, Cimarron; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell Henry and Guy Henry Jr.; and a granddaughter.

Iva L. Leach
Iva L. Leach, 84, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
She was born Sept. 4, 1915, in Wichita County, the daughter of George and Katherine (Biel) Shafer.
A Garden City resident since 1965, moving from Wichita County, she was a homemaker. She had worked for Lou Ann's Maternity and Children's Wear and for the Dart-In Convenience Store.
Mrs. Leach was a member and lay minister of First Christian Church, belonged to the Ladies Social Club, Family Crisis Center, Finney County Senior Citizens Association, Friends of the Lee Richardson Zoo and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary.
In 1950, she married Ralph Leach at Scott City. He died in 1969 at Garden City. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and a son, Ronnie Leach.
She is survived by a son, Robert Leach, Garden City; a sister, Susie White, Leoti; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald Carter officiating. Burial will be 2 p.m. Monday in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Family Crisis Center or the Finney County Senior Center, both in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
