Mary F. Craig
Mary F. Craig, 100, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
She was born June 24, 1899, at Santa Fe, the daughter of Robert and Allie (Scott) Kells. She lived in Haskell County and attended rural schools.
On Nov. 20, 1920, she married Ernest Craig Sr. at Garden City and they lived in Kearny County. He died June 19, 1962. She was also preceded in death by a son, Ernest Craig Jr.; a daughter, Reva Yardley; six brothers; five sisters; a grandson; and a granddaughter.
Mrs. Craig moved to Garden City in 1970. She was a member of First Christian Church and the Busy 12 Luncheon Club, and enjoyed cooking, crocheting, playing bingo and working on puzzles.
She is survived by a daughter, Pat Cochell, Lakin; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will follow in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 5 to 8 tonight, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Terrace Garden Care Center, in care of the funeral home.
Marvin E. Rouse
Marvin E. Rouse, 50, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000, in Garden City.
He was born Jan. 23, 1950, at La Harpe, Ill., the son of Gerrard E. and Mary Eileen (Bennett) Rouse.
A Garden City resident since 1972, moving from Illinois, he was a professional drag racer and was the owner and operator of Classic Chevy Sales in Garden City. He was a member of the National Hot Rod Association.
On Dec. 31, 1999, he married Dona J. Proehl at Garden City. She survives. Other survivors are a daughter, Natalie Rouse, Manhattan; a son, Tyler Rouse, Dodge City; his parents, Macomb, Ill.; and three sisters, Ketura Brueck, Burlington, Iowa, Loretta Thomann, Middleton, Iowa, and Ila Peterson, Galesburg, Ill.
A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Burkhart Funeral Chapel, Dodge City, with the Rev. E. Kim Engleking officiating. Cremation has taken place.
There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Drag Racers Association of Women (DRAW), in care of the funeral chapel, 1901 N. 14th Ave., Dodge City, KS 67801.
Janet E. Bowman
Funeral for Janet E. Bowman, 55, a lifetime resident of Pawnee Rock, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Morell Funeral Home, Larned, with the Rev. Don Paden officiating. Burial will be in Pawnee Rock Cemetery.
Mrs. Bowman died Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at her home.
She was born Sept. 15, 1944, at Great Bend, the daughter of Dean and Nancye (Converse) Unruh.
A homemaker, she was a lifetime member of the Pawnee Rock Christian Church and the Christian Women's Fellowship.
On Aug. 22, 1963, she married Joseph M. Bowman at Macksville. He survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Sharynn K. Bowman, Garden City; a son, Daniel J. Bowman, Larned; three brothers, James R. Unruh, Pawnee Rock, William E. Unruh, Macksville, and George M. Unruh, St. John; and a sister, Susan G. Ellis, Lafayette, La.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 124, Larned, KS 67550-0124.
Vernon 'Jack' Harrington
Vernon "Jack" Harrington, 90, died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born Jan. 17, 1910, at Ruby, Okla., the son of John and Allie (Jenkins) Harrington. He grew up in Conway Springs and attended schools there.
On Dec. 12, 1929, he married Effie Ray at Pratt. They lived for a few years in Ness City and in Dighton before moving to Scott City and then to Garden City in 1942.
Mr. Harrington served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 during World War II, serving most of his time on ships as a Cook Petty Officer 3rd Class.
After the service, he returned to Garden City where he worked as a truck driver for 36 years for Smith Sand Co., retiring in 1983. He attended First Christian Church and was a member of the American Legion and VFW.
Mr. Harrington enjoyed boxing and was once a Golden Glove Boxer as a light featherweight. He also enjoyed fishing and being with his grandchildren.
He is survived by a son, Bud Harrington, and a daughter, Patt Erwin, both of Garden City; a sister, Rella Kostner, Del City, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, who died on Dec. 28, 1987; two brothers; and a granddaughter.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City. Family and friends are invited to meet at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, at 10 a.m. to visit before leaving for the cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Garden City Area Veterans Honor Guard and the Rev. Donald E. Carter will officiate.
Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.
J.A. Giles Jr.
SATANTA -- Graveside service for J.A. Giles Jr., 64, a former Satanta resident, will be 2 p.m. Friday in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta.
Mr. Giles, of Tyrone, Okla., died Tuesday, March 28, 2000, at Beaver County Nursing Home in Beaver, Okla.
He was born April 30, 1935, at Breckenridge, Texas, the son of Julius A. and Velma Antnett (Greg) Giles. The family moved to Satanta when he was 8.
Mr. Giles had worked as a manager of a service station and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He is survived by a son, Steven Giles, Fair Grove, Mo.; two daughters, Brenda Warren, Tyrone, and Karen Tharp, Springfield, Mo.; two brothers, Orval "Bud" Giles, Fort Worth, Texas, and Clyde Giles, Satanta; four sisters, Margerie Hagerman, Ulysses, Mary V. Day, Liberal, Roberta Lewis, Montezuma, and Anita Brown, Sublette; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Aubra Giles; and a sister, Jettie Lea Giles.

Carlton D. Foos
Carlton D. Foos, 70, a former resident of Leoti and Wallace County, died Monday, March 27, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City, where he was taken by ambulance Sunday evening.
He was born Dec. 28, 1929, at LaCrosse, the son of Harry H. and Clara E. (Schwindt) Foos. He attended grade school in Gove County and graduated from high school at Leoti.
He and his wife, Verna Jean (Kuhlman) Foos, whom he married on Oct. 4, 1950, had five children. She died in 1981 at Tribune. He was also preceded in death by a brother and a granddaughter.
Mr. Foos had lived in Garden City for the past eight to 10 years. He had farmed in Wallace, Wichita and Kearny counties his entire life and also operated earth-moving equipment. His favorite hobbies were Keno, gardening, woodworking, crafts, fishing, time with his grandchildren, and helping others. He had a dog, Amy.
He is survived by two sons, Duane, Sharon Springs, and Terry, Loomis, Calif.; three daughters, Debbie Costa, Sacramento, Calif., Shelly Coker, Sharon Springs, and Susan Chaney, Hays; a brother, Maurice Foos, Scio, Ore.; his companion, Ann Newsome; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial graveside service will be 11:30 a.m. CST Saturday in Leoti Cemetery, with the Rev. Paul McNall officiating. Memorials may be sent to Bateman Funeral Home, Sharon Springs, with a use to be decided by the family at a later date.
