Mary A. Curl

SCOTT CITY -- Vigil prayer service for Mary A. Curl, 58, will be 7 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Francis Khoi Nguyen officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.

Mrs. Curl died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

She was born Feb. 15, 1942, at Peoria, Ill., the daughter of Huey and Delia B. (Mesker) Curl.

A retired licensed practical nurse, she moved to Scott City in 1961, to San Angelo, Texas, in 1977, and returned to Scott City in 1995. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Scott City.

She is survived by a son, John Boyer, Santa Anna, Calif.; a daughter, Dee Hedges, Scott City; a brother, Tom Curl, Forgan, Okla.; and a granddaughter.

Visitation hours are until 7 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Teens For Christ, Scott City, in care of the funeral home.

James Windol Wise

ULYSSES -- James Windol Wise, 85, died Thursday, March 2, 2000, at his home in Ulysses.

He was born July 30, 1914, at Bono, Texas, the son of James Emmit and Mary M. (McKeel) Wise.

On Dec. 24, 1942, he married Otehka Caudle at Oklahoma City. After their marriage, he served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II. They later lived in Texas and Oklahoma before moving in 1947 to Vilas, Colo.

They moved to Ulysses in 1953 and he worked for Sam B. Weibe and later for the Ulysses Co-op. Mr. Wise then started his own business and did custom fertilizing until his retirement at age 74.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Stratford, Okla., and the VFW at Ada, Okla. He enjoyed being with his family, visiting with people, telling stories about the "good old days" and watching baseball.

He is survived by his wife; four sons, James "Buddy" Wise, Eddie Wise, Larry Joe Wise and Michael Wise, all of Ulysses; a daughter, Jerilyn Foncannon, Centerville, La.; a brother, Raymond Wise, Minneola; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Winford Wise and Lenard Wise; two sisters, Mildred Wise and Thelma Davis; and four grandchildren.

Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Assembly of God Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Mike Holman officiating. Graveside service will follow in Ulysses Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Charles B. Hart Post No. 79 of Ulysses.

Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Saturday and from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials are suggested to the women's ministry of the church or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home, 218 S. Main St., Ulysses, KS 67880.

Chester Ray Spiker

SYRACUSE -- Funeral for Chester Ray Spiker, 79, was to be 2:30 p.m. MST today at the First Presbyterian Church, Syracuse, with the Revs. Bob Goebel and Jim Puckett officiating. Burial was to follow in Syracuse Cemetery.

Mr. Spiker died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony's Campus, Hays.

He was born Aug. 12, 1920, at Peabody, the son of Elmer and Mildred (Rockhold) Spiker, and graduated from Burns High School in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army from 1940 to 1945 in the European theater during World War II, participating in the assault on the bridge at Remagen, Germany.

On Dec. 24, 1950, he married S. Jo Ann Wilbeck at Beloit.

A Syracuse resident since 1951, he farmed until 1990 and had also worked for Thompson Oil Co., Cross Motor Co. and Davis Motor Co., and had operated a recreation center. He and his wife owned and operated the Rustic Petal Flowers & Gift Shop in Syracuse since 1981.

Mr. Spiker was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Masonic Lodge, was a skillful domino and moon player, and also bought and sold cattle.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Terryl Spiker, Syracuse, and Kerry Spiker, Dayton, Ohio; a brother, Lloyd Spiker, Omaha, Neb.; two sisters, Bernice Amerine and Louise Hatcher, both of Syracuse; and five grandchildren.

Memorials are suggested to the Shriners Burn Center, in care of Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse.

Timothy J. Pitner

Memorial service for Timothy J. Pitner, 37, of Littleton, Colo., was to be 11 this morning at Brock's North Hill Chapel, Hays, with the Rev. Earl Befort officiating. Additional services are planned at Littleton United Methodist Church.

Mr. Pitner died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at his parent's home in Hays.

He was born April 25, 1962, at Colby, the son of Thomas J. and Donna (Dreiling) Pitner. He graduated from Goodland High School in 1980 and also graduated from the University of Iowa.

Mr. Pitner was a consultant in finance and investor relations. He belonged to the National Alpine Club.

On Aug. 12, 1994, he married Peggy Carpenter at Littleton. She survives. Other survivors are a daughter, Mollie, and a stepdaughter, Nikki Carpenter, both of the home; his father and stepmother, Thomas and Carol Pitner, Hays; two brothers, Thomas G., Loveland, Colo., and Todd, Brandon, Fla.; three sisters, Kolean Pitner, Minneapolis, Karen Luckett, Garden City, and Kim Pitner-Keller, Olathe; and eight nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Robert J. Murphy Sr.

DIGHTON -- Funeral for Robert J. Murphy Sr., 68, a former area resident, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Mike Grogan officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.

Mr. Murphy, of Harper, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.

He was born March 17, 1931, at Neodesha, the son of Melvin Dale and Violet (Bird) Murphy. The family moved to Dighton in 1943.

After graduating from Dighton High School in 1949, he worked at Farmers Oil and at Gough Motors before moving to California in 1957. He returned to Dighton in 1962, moved back to California in 1964, back to Dighton in 1972, and then lived in Hill City before moving to Scott City in 1977.

A mechanic, Mr. Murphy had worked for the Scott County Road Department until he retired and moved to Harper in 1994. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing and especially enjoyed his family activities.

On Dec. 22, 1949, he married Bettie Lee Hemel at Dighton. She survives. He is also survived by six sons, Dennis Murphy, Red Bluff, Calif., Larry Murphy, Robert Murphy Jr., Melvin Murphy and Ronald Murphy, all of Scott City, and Charles Murphy, WaKeeney; three daughters, Kathryn Lewis, Scott City, Susan Speer, Dighton, and Sandra Buster, Brewster; a brother, James Murphy, Hill City; 22 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Roger Murphy; a grandson; and a great-granddaughter.

Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials to the Robert Murphy Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.

Maude Ellen Jones Herren

Funeral for Maude Ellen Jones Herren, 92, a former Garden City resident, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Dishon-Maple-Chaney Mortuary, Horton. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery, Whiting.

Mrs. Herren, of Whiting, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at Tri-County Manor in Horton.

She was born Aug. 14, 1907, at Hutchinson, the daughter of Alonzo and Anna (Brown) Cummings.

In 1930, she married Cecil Jones at Emporia. He died in 1969. She married Alvin "Harlan" Herren in 1982 at Security, Colo. He died in 1986. She was also preceded in death by a son, Billy Jones, in 1952; a brother, Charlie Cummings; and four sisters, Cora Vanlandingham, Esther Parker, Ruth Prevo and Maggie Pankratz.

A homemaker, Mrs. Herren was a member of the Senior Citizens at Whiting and the Church of God at Hutchinson.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Wenger, Whiting, and Dorothy Harris, Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sons, Jim Jones, Garden City, and Richard Jones, Horton; a sister, Edna Clark, Denver; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the mortuary. Memorials to the Maude Herren Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the mortuary, 909 Central Ave., Horton, KS 66439.
