Archie E. Berry
LAKIN -- Archie E. Berry, 91, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at his home in Lakin.
He was born May 5, 1908, at Denver, where he lived for most of his life. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he returned to Denver, where he worked as a core maker at General Iron Works for 35 years. He lived in Montana for several years before returning to Denver. He moved to Lakin in 1984.
Mr. Berry was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion, both at Lakin, and of the Disabled American Veterans.
He married Valine Cornforth at Denver. She died in March 1981. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Archie E. Berry Jr. and Robert Berry.
He is survived by a daughter, Shirley Heaton, Lakin; a stepdaughter, Delsie Bader, Grand Island, Neb.; a sister, Lola Edlin, Denver; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Lakin Cemetery, with the Rev. Robert Roberts officiating.
Visitation hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.
Ethel Margie Zimmerman
Funeral for Ethel Margie Zimmerman, 94, of Sterling, will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sillin Funeral Home, Sterling, with the Rev. Robert Friesen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Hutchinson.
Mrs. Zimmerman died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Lyons Good Samaritan Center in Lyons.
She was born March 17, 1905, at Lyons, the daughter of John Benjamin and Daisy Minerva (Hartle) Cross. A longtime resident of Sterling, she was a homemaker.
On Sept. 6, 1927, she married Weldon Zimmerman at Hoisington. He died Feb. 20, 1996. She was also preceded in death by a son, Walter Leo Zimmerman; a daughter, Patricia Joy Zimmerman; two brothers, Bill Cross and John Cross; and two sisters, Ruby Ludwig and Thelma Mollart.
She is survived by a son, Wallace Lee Zimmerman, Garden City; a daughter, Sherry Bigcharles, Lyons; two sisters, Dorothy Carmichael, Meade, and Rowena Braman, Wichita; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Roy E. Pennell
SCOTT CITY -- Funeral for Roy E. Pennell, 85, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Charles Friend and Neil Friend, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Mr. Pennell died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.
He was born Feb. 25, 1914, at Chautauqua, the son of William Edgar and Lillie (Buckner) Pennell.
A lifetime resident of Scott County, he was a farmer. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the European campaign of World War II, attaining the rank of staff sergeant.
On Aug. 17, 1945, he married Doris Mae Brooks at Garden City. She died May 19, 1993, at Chautauqua. He was also preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by a sister, Ruby Friend, Lakin; three nephews; and three nieces.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Park Lane Nursing Home or the donor's choice, both in care of the funeral home.
Lawrence E. McKinney
SCOTT CITY -- Lawrence E. McKinney, 67, a retired mechanic for Lane County Feeders, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at Wichita.
He was born Jan. 20, 1933, at Rayville, Mo., the son of Fred and Grace McKinney.
He is survived by his wife, Carol (Burroughs) McKinney, whom he married April 10, 1981, at Dighton; two sons, Thomas McKinney and David McKinney, both of Scott City; five daughters, Delores Moffet, Ulysses, Susan Myers, Kalvesta, Carole MacKenzie, Lawrenceburg, Ind., Brenda Tucker, Scott City, and Dana Collins, Weatherford, Texas; a brother, Fred McKinney, Rayville; and three sisters, Margaret French, Rayville, Dorothy Cutting, Kansas City, Mo., and Freda Thatcher, Richmond, Mo.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Scott City Church of the Nazarene. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to the American Diabetes Association, in care of Hillside Funeral Home East, Wichita.
Merle C. McKean
SCOTT CITY -- Merle C. McKean, 74, a lifetime resident of Scott County, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
He was born June 24, 1925, at Scott City, the son of Herald and Jessie (Scott) McKean.
Mr. McKean worked in the oil industry, in both field and management, before he started farming and ranching in Scott County.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II; belonged to Holy Cross Lutheran Church, VFW Post No. 7773 and American Legion No. 183, all at Scott City; was a past president and board member of the Scott County Fair Board; and held lifetime memberships in the National Rifleman Association, Quarter Horse Association and Cattleman's Association.
On June 1, 1947, he married Delphia Rueter at Scott City. She survives. Other survivors are two daughters, Merlene L. Leochner, Lebanon, Mo., and Glenda J. Moore, Manhattan; a brother, Lawrence H. McKean, Scott City; a sister, Joyce L. Morga, St. Louis; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jeannie.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Riebhoff officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to Holy Cross Lutheran Church or the American Heart Association, both in care of the funeral home.
Muriel Hanson
SATANTA -- Graveside service for Muriel Hanson, 87, of Guymon, Okla., will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Satanta Cemetery, with the Rev. Jim Maynard officiating.
Mrs. Hanson died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2000, at Memorial Hospital of Texas County.
She was born Aug. 19, 1912, at Syracuse, the daughter of John T. and Agnes Pearl (Brown) Rigg.
Mrs. Hanson had lived in Guymon since the early 1990s, moving from Salem, Ark. A homemaker, she was a member of Salem Presbyterian Church and the No Mans Land Senior Citizens.
She is survived by six children, Marion Carter, Guymon, John Bush, Sacramento, Calif., Jean Pippert, Scranton, Murray Bush, Wichita, Gale Pelser, Satanta, and Beulah Tucker, Perrin, Texas; 22 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Bush, who died in May 1962; and two brothers.

Viola C. Grothusen
SCOTT CITY -- Viola C. Grothusen, 93, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2000, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.
She was born April 1, 1906, at Ellsworth, the daughter of William and Christina (Winkler) Huseman. She graduated from Ellsworth High School in 1923, and attended Kansas Wesleyan University and Fort Hays Teachers College.
A Scott City resident since 1944, moving from Des Moines, Iowa, she was a teacher and a homemaker. She belonged to the First Christian Church of Scott City, the Kansas State Teachers Association and the Kansas Retired Teachers Association, and was a past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 44 at Ellsworth.
On Dec. 24, 1937, she married Ralph Grothusen at Ellsworth. He died July 1, 1997, at Scott City.
She is survived by two sons, Rex Grothusen and David Grothusen, both of Scott City; a brother, Arthur Huseman, Scott City; two sisters, Velma Huseman, Scott City, and Helen Krupp, Ellsworth; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring and Steve Payne officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are from 6 to 9 tonight, 9 a.m. to noon and 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Park Lane Nursing Home, in care of the funeral home.
