Audra Ellen Oliver
Funeral for Audra Ellen Oliver, 80, will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald Carter officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Oliver died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
She was born Oct. 29, 1919, in Finney County, the daughter of Luther E. and Lena (Cook) Proffitt.
A beautician by trade, Mrs. Oliver had also worked in the meat department at Walls Foodliner and as a clerk at Streeter Cleaners, all in Garden City. A lifetime Garden City area resident, she was a member of First Christian Church, Eagles Auxiliary and Royal Neighbors of America.
She is survived by two sons, Bernard R. Oliver, Garden City, and Steven K. Oliver, Wichita; a brother, Earl Proffitt, Garden City; a sister, Ruth Buehler, Great Bend; and seven grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials to the Audra E. Oliver Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Howard M. Long
SCOTT CITY -- Howard M. Long, 94, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
He was born Dec. 21, 1905, at Pleasant Plain, Ind., the son of Issac M. and Amanda E. (Wolverton) Long.
In 1906, the family moved to a homestead in the Panhandle area. They moved to Larned in 1911 and he attended school there. After graduating, he attended the University of Kansas for one year. He moved to Garden City in 1929 and to Scott City in 1942.
Mr. Long had been engaged in farming. In 1936, he began working on a fleet of transport trucks and was a shop foreman in charge of maintenance for Shallow Water Refining Co., later known as Century Refining Co. He worked part time repairing automotive electrical units from 1970 through 1996. He was a member of First Christian Church of Scott City.
On Aug. 16, 1930, he married Ella C. Butler at Syracuse. She survives. Other survivors are a son, Richard Long, Scott City; three grandsons; and two great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by two sisters and five brothers.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church, in care of the funeral home.
Albert L. Dague
SCOTT CITY -- Albert L. Dague, 92, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at Wichita County Long Term Care Center in Leoti.
He was born May 24, 1907, in Scott County, the son of Harvey E. and Minnie M. (Finkenbinder) Dague.
A lifetime Scott County resident, Mr. Dague was a farmer and stockman. He belonged to Prairie View Church of the Brethren at Friend.
On Feb. 1, 1933, he married Bertha M. Beach at Scott City. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Eva Wing, Leoti; a sister, Elizabeth Miller, Garden City; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church, Scott City, with the Rev. John Warring and Martin Gauby, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Memorials to the Albert Dague Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Robert E. Chipley
Funeral for Robert E. Chipley, 71, will be 10 a.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Revs. Janet Hernandez and Dave Sweley officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Chipley died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born April 21, 1928, at New Franklin, Mo., the son of Charles and Jessie (Gentz) Chipley.
A resident of Garden City since 1973, moving from Overland Park, he was the manager of the Meals on Wheels program in Garden City. He belonged to the First United Methodist Church of Garden City and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program with the Finney County Senior Center.
On Dec. 25, 1947, he married Helen C. Brown at Boonville, Mo. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Larry E. Chipley, Manhattan, N.Y.; a daughter, Pamela Sue Chipley, Garden City; and a grandson. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles L. Chipley; and a sister, Dolly Yotze.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the Meals on Wheels program, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
Adrian Thomas Skinner
HUGOTON -- Funeral for Adrian Thomas Skinner, 88, a former Hugoton resident, will take place today at the United Methodist Church in Hugo, Colo., with the Revs. Verna P. Mika and Terry Farmer officiating. Graveside service will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Hugo.
Mr. Skinner, of Hugo, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2000, at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colo., after being admitted there Feb. 11 for treatment of double pneumonia.
He was born Dec. 7, 1911, in Pratt County, the son of Elliott and Bessie (Thomas) Skinner. The family lived near Liberal until he was 6, and then moved near Hugoton, where he spent his childhood and early adulthood. He attended a one-room country school in Stevens County.
On May 14, 1933, he and Opal Hanner, who were childhood sweethearts living two miles apart, were married at her parent's home in Stevens County.
The son of a farmer, Mr. Skinner chose farming as his lifelong occupation. While living in Kansas, he and his wife purchased land south of Limon, Colo. They moved to Limon in 1948 and to the farm in 1951. He continued purchasing more land and raising wheat until his retirement and return to Hugo in 1993.
Mr. Skinner served several years on school boards in Kansas and was on the Limon School Board for 13 years. In 1964, he received an award for service from the Colorado State School Board Association.
He was one of the organizers and served four years on the board of the Limon Co-op, served six years on the State School Lands Committee, served on the Committee for Lincoln County ASC and on the District Committee for Weed Control.
He also served as president and treasurer of the Federal Land Bank Board, was an active member of Hugo United Methodist Church and the UMC Adult Bible Study class.
Survivors are his wife; a brother, Darrell Skinner, Hugoton; two sons, Larry Skinner, Limon, and Adrian T. "Boon" Skinner, Aurora, Colo.; a daughter, Connie Diffee, Fort Gibson, Okla.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Mervin Skinner; a sister, Ruth Heckman; and a daughter, Karen Sinn.

Vincent V. Hewitt
Vincent V. Hewitt died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at the Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Francis Campus, Wichita. He was 75.
Hewitt was born May 26, 1924, in La Cygne, the son of James Walter Hewitt and Florence Pauline Kuhn.
After attending schools in Lousiburg, he served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1947, serving during World War II.
Hewitt lived in Greensburg and Colby for a short time before moving to Scott City in 1961 and later to Garden City.
He married Betty Jean Eden in 1945 in England. He later married Lorene A. Brant Jan. 2, 1965, in New Mexico.
Hewitt worked as a sales representative for Mutual of Omaha since 1953 before retiring in 1989. He enjoyed country singing, playing the fiddle and guitar and gardening.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorene, and a sister, Zelma Wartraus.
He was a member of the Garden Valley Church, St. Mary Catholic Church, the American Legion Post No. 9, the VFW Post No. 2279, the American Diabetes Association, the Kansas Old Time Fiddlers and Pickers and AARP.
Survivors include: a son, Alvin V. Hewitt, Greensburg; two daughters, Sandra M. Peterson, Boxholme, Iowa, and Vicky Hendricks, San Diego, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Prieb and Father James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery.
