Jackie D. Park
Jackie D. Park, 70, of Lucas, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, at the Wichita VA Hospital, after being in failing health for some time.
He was born Aug. 28, 1929, at Woodruff, the youngest of six sons born to Charles E. and Martha (Bennett) Park. He attended grade school at a country school in Phillips County and attended high school in Long Island.
On Aug. 27, 1950, he married Myrna Brandon at Phillipsburg. They moved from Phillipsburg to Lucas 38 years ago and he helped build Wilson Dam.
Mr. Park was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean conflict. He played the saxophone, loved old-time music and was a collector of records of that time period, and he also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Linda Atkinson, Garden City; four grandsons; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five brothers, Tom, Pete, Sid, Ben and Vern.
Funeral was Jan. 29 at First Baptist Church of Lucas, with the Rev. Ben Kohrs officiating. Mr. Park's nephew, Charles Park, was the soloist. Burial was in Lucas Cemetery.

Lolita Durr
DIGHTON -- Lolita Durr, 88, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Hays Medical Center.
Born Dec. 26, 1911, in Lane County, she was the daughter of Charles and Myrtle (McCloud) Garton Sr.
She grew up in Lane County, graduated from Dighton High School, attended Fort Hays State University, and taught elementary school in Utica for three years and in Lane County for seven years.
After marrying Ronald D. Durr on Oct. 6, 1940, at Scott City, they lived in Laurel, Mont., before moving to a ranch in Colorado in 1944. Her husband died May 4, 1979. She was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Durr returned to Dighton in 1980. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dighton, and enjoyed reading, sewing and knitting.
She is survived by two nieces, Peggy Ann Muffitt, Dighton, and Linda Lou Hayden, Elk City, Okla.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Dighton, with the Rev. Tod Anthony officiating. Burial will follow in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
James C. Briggs
SUBLETTE -- James C. Briggs, 90, a former Dodge City resident, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit.
He was born Jan. 13, 1910, at Mullinville, the son of Tom C. and Tony Bell (White) Briggs.
Mr. Briggs had lived in Dodge City for most of his life. A machinist and welder, he had worked at Curtis Machine Shop, Dodge City, until his retirement.
He is survived by two sons, Jack Briggs, Phoenix, and Charles Briggs, Highpoint, N.C.; three daughters, Lora McMillan and Donna Hankins, both of Aurora, Colo., and Diane Creeden, Sublette; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia (Phillips) Briggs, in July 1965; a brother, Clarence Briggs; two sisters, Marcell Hale and Lucille Gumbay; and a grandson.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday in Fairview Cemetery, Greensburg.
Visitation hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette.
Susie Schmidt
MONTEZUMA -- Susie Schmidt, 87 died today, Feb. 7, 2000, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma, where she had been a resident.
She was born Nov. 11, 1912, at Durham, the daughter of Sam J. and Minnie (Schmidt) Schmidt. The family moved to Montezuma in 1917.
A homemaker, Mrs. Schmidt was a member of Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Montezuma.
On March 8, 1936, she married Elmer B. Schmidt at Montezuma. He survives. She is also survived by a son, Melvin Schmidt, Cyrus, Minn.; a daughter, Margaret Brandt, Halstead; a brother, Henry Schmidt, Montezuma; four sisters, Alice Smith, Alma O. Dirks and Dorothy Schmidt, all of Montezuma, and Irene Dirks, Wilcox, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, LeeVern Schmidt; an infant brother; two infant sisters; and an infant daughter, Clara Schmidt.
Funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Church of God in Christ Mennonite, Montezuma. Charles Schmidt, Edwin Classen and Glen Yost, ministers, will officiate. Burial will follow in North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma.
Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Montezuma Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.
Leonard Jacob Schadel
HEALY -- Funeral for Leonard Jacob Schadel, 76, a longtime resident of Healy before moving to Meade, was to be 10 this morning at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City. Elder Darwin Hoffman was to officiate. Burial was to follow in Healy Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the VFW.
Mr. Schadel died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Scott County Hospital in Scott City.
He was born May 10, 1923, at Alexander, the son of Frank Jacob and Gladys Rose Monroe Coddington Schadel.
A farmer and stockman, he had lived at Meade for three years, having previously resided at Healy for more than 50 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, served on the board of directors of Healy Co-op and First State Bank, and was scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop No. 97, all at Healy.
Mr. Schadel belonged to the Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints and the VFW of Dighton, served on the Healy School Board from 1950 to 1975, was a trustee of Cheyenne Township of Lane County and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
On June 1, 1948, he married Marian Hagans at Healy. She died July 2, 1996. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Alton Coddington; a sister, Myrrl Bondurant; and a great-granddaughter.
On Nov. 21, 1996, he married Loretta Williamson at Healy. She survives. Other survivors are two sons, Franklin Keith Schadel, Scott City, and Dale Leon Schadel, Healy; a daughter, Marilyn Heinz, Healy; a brother, Cecil Coddington, Burdett; two sisters, Rita Graves, Healy, and Faye Mostrom, Burdett; three stepsons, James Coker, Round Rock, Texas, Fred Coker, Kyle, Texas, and Richard Coker, Broken Bow, Okla.; a stepdaughter, Dawna Nims, Corpus Christi, Texas; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to Healy United Methodist Church, the VFW at Dighton or Boy Scout Troop No. 97 at Healy, all in care of the funeral home.
Richard Alan "Rich" Leatherman
Funeral for Richard Alan "Rich" Leatherman, 36, of Ulysses, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kitch Funeral Home Chapel, Liberal, with the Rev. Michael Ide officiating. Burial will follow in Liberal Cemetery.
Mr. Leatherman died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Garden City.
He was born Feb. 21, 1963, at Denver, the son of Darrell R. and Betty (Mullins) Leatherman.
Mr. Leatherman worked as a derrick hand with Gonzales Well Service. He was baptized in the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
On Sept. 18, 1999, he married Susan Ingels at Liberal. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Linden Leatherman, Turpin, Okla., and Corby Williamson, Lamar, Colo.; an infant daughter, Faith Christine Leatherman, of the home; his mother and stepfather, Betty Leatherman Burr and Jim Burr, Turpin; two brothers, Marvin Lee Leatherman, Lamar, and James M. Leatherman, Columbia, S.C.; and two sisters, Bobbi Goodman, Columbia, and Carrell Davidson, Spencer, N.C. He was preceded in death by his father.
