Thelma F. Baker
Funeral for Thelma F. Baker, 93, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Christian Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Burial will follow in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Miss Baker died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
Born Sept. 2, 1906, at Garden City, she was the daughter of Oliver Otto and Alice D. (Pearce) Baker.
She attended Garden City schools and received a degree in primary education from Fort Hays State College. She later did graduate work at Northwest University in Evanston, Ill., and at Boulder (Colo.) State College. She taught school in Garden City and Finney County for 42 years, retiring in 1971.
Miss Baker joined First Christian Church in Garden City in 1916, making her the person with the longest membership in the church. She also belonged to Fellowship Guild, Loyal Leaders Sunday School class, American Association of Retired Persons and the Retired Teachers Association.
Her most enjoyable hobby was traveling and she had visited throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, several of the islands, Europe, Africa and the Orient. She also enjoyed reading.
She is survived by a brother, H. Vernon Baker of Garden City.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to Garden Valley Retirement Village, in care of the funeral home.
Ida Marie Miles
Ida Marie Miles, 98, a former Garden City resident, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at Aldersgate Village in Topeka.
She was born Sept. 2, 1901, at Newton, the daughter of John and Sarah (Suderman) Warkentin.
A 1924 graduate of Halstead School of Nursing, she worked as a nurse in Rochester, Minn.; Chicago; Winfield; Halstead; Truth or Consequences, N.M.; and Garden City.
Mrs. Miles lived in Garden City from 1930 to 1987, moved to Liberal in 1987 and to Topeka in 1996. She was a member of Community Congregational Church in Garden City.
On Dec. 31, 1930, she married B. McKay Miles at Watonga, Okla. He died in 1967. She was also preceded in death by a son, J.M. Miles, in 1967; and by a grandson in 1980.
She is survived by a son, Charles Miles, Seattle; a daughter, Ann Kobs, Topeka; a brother, Herman Warkentin, Fort Worth, Texas; a sister, Alma Loveless, Geary, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Community Congregational Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Mike Lake officiating. Burial will follow in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church, 710 N. Third St.

Clarence O. Davis
SCOTT CITY -- Funeral for Clarence O. Davis, 87, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City, with the Rev. Greg Woff officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Mr. Davis died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at West Wind Nursing Home in Pueblo, Colo.
He was born Oct. 20, 1912, at Alamota, the son of Thomas and Margaret (Smith) Davis.
A longtime resident of Scott City until moving to Pueblo in 1975, he had worked as a farm laborer across Kansas and Colorado.
On July 9, 1942, he married Vera M. Rohrbough at Scott City. She died Aug. 10, 1993, at Tribune. He was also preceded in death by a grandson.
He is survived by a son, Marvin Davis, Greeley, Colo.; three daughters, Darlene Snyder, Scott City, Joan Scofield, Salt Lake City, and Ruth Trusty, Pueblo; 19 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at the funeral home. Memorials to the Clarence Davis Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Juana Maria Baca
ULYSSES -- Graveside service for Juana Maria Baca, infant daughter of Juana Maria (Hernandez) and Manuel Baca of Ulysses, was to be 2 p.m. today in Ulysses Cemetery, with the Rev. John Kowal officiating.
Juana was stillborn Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Bob Wilson Memorial Grant County Hospital in Ulysses.
She is survived by her parents; a brother, Miguel Baca, Ulysses; seven sisters, Maria Elen Baca, Elizabeth Baca, Rosa Baca, Maryra Baca, Norma Baca, Elsa Baca and Jaryxa Janet Baca, all of Ulysses; and her grandparents, Maria Isabel Ramariez, Guadalupe Hernandez and Maria Garcia.
Grant County Funeral Home, Ulysses, was in charge of arrangements.
Bruce Shoemate
Bruce Shoemate, 68, of Avon, Ill., died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Galesburg, Ill.
He was born July 21, 1931, at LaHarpe, Ill., the son of Arval and Susie Mae (Elston) Shoemate. He grew up in the areas of LaHarpe and Terre Haute, Ill., graduating from high school at Terre Haute.
Mr. Shoemate served in the U.S. Marines from 1952 to 1954 in Japan. He lived most of his life in Knox and Warren counties in Illinois, with the exception of 14 months spent in Kansas.
He worked as a production foreman of Gates Production Co. at Galesburg and as a maintenance foreman at IBP for 14 years before his retirement. He was a member of Cherryville Presbyterian Church. An avid horseman, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
On Sept. 5, 1954, he married Karol Smith at Greenbush, Ill. She survives. He is also survived by his mother, Monmouth, Ill.; three daughters, Teresa Barlier, Franklin, Ill., Wendy Calero, El Paso, Texas, and Marla Jarmer, Garden City; four grandchildren; and a sister, Weona Mae Shoemate, Monmouth. He was preceded in death by his father and an infant son.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Corman Memorial Home, Roseville, Ill., with Kurt Ayres officiating. Burial will follow in Greenbush Cemetery, with military services conducted by the Abingdon (Ill.) American Legion Post.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Corman Memorial Home. Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Hospice, in care of the memorial home.
Ruby E. Ochs
HOLCOMB -- Funeral for Ruby E. Ochs, 73, a former Holcomb resident, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Lyle Steuhrenberg officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Ochs died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at Downs Nursing Center in Downs.
She was born March 2, 1926, at Meade, the daughter of Ernest and Hilda (Zellmer) Bohling.
Mrs. Ochs worked for many years as a registered nurse at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She had been a resident of Cawker City since 1990, moving from Holcomb, and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Garden City.
On Aug. 22, 1948, she married Leo Ochs at Wichita. He survives. She is also survived by a son, Ronald D. Ochs, Cawker City; three brothers, Wallace Bohling, Holcomb, Marvin Bohling, Jetmore, and Arlen Bohling, Idaho; four sisters, Opal Root, Colorado Springs, Colo., Alice Duncan, Wyoming, Erma Hurst, Tennessee, and Arlene Allison, Kingman, Ariz.; and one grandson. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Naomi Boldin and Luinda Ochs.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 tonight. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
