Rita T. Hermes
SCOTT CITY -- Vigil prayer service for Rita T. Hermes, 77, will be 7:30 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Scott City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Scott City, with the Rev. Francis Khoi Nguyen officiating. Burial will be in Scott County Cemetery, Scott City.
Miss Hermes died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City.
She was born Jan. 1, 1923, at Ost, the daughter of John Nicholas and Mary Anna (Hilger) Hermes. She graduated high school from Sacred Heart Academy in Wichita.
A Scott City resident since 1934, moving from Shallow Water, Miss Hermes was a sales clerk at Duckwalls Inc. for many years. She belonged to St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Ladies Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella.
She is survived by seven brothers, Eugene Hermes, Columbia Falls, Mont., Raymond Hermes and Gerald Hermes, both of Scott City, Clarence Hermes, Colorado Springs, Colo., Dr. Jerome Hermes, Seneca, Bishop Herbert Hermes, OSB, Cristalandia, Brazil, and Norbert Hermes, Salina; two sisters, Victoria Urban, Englewood, Colo., and Lucilla Herman, Broken Arrow, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Brunner.
Visitation hours are until 7 tonight at the funeral home. Memorials to the Rita T. Hermes Memorial Fund may be sent in care of the funeral home.
Michelle Reneé Bradley
Funeral for Michelle Reneé Bradley, 33, a former Garden City resident, will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Russon Brothers Mortuary in Bountiful, Utah. Graveside service will take place in Abernathy, Texas.
Mrs. Bradley, of Taylorsville, Utah, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
She was born June 29, 1966, at Wichita, the daughter of Michael Gimple and Vicki Halbleib.
She is survived by her husband, Ross Bradley, whom she married Dec. 30, 1994, at Salt Lake City; her children, Joshua Bradley, Amber Bradley, Michelle Bradley and Megan Bradley, all of the home; her father; her mother, Vicki Landaal; and her grandparents, Lawrence and Maxine Halbleib, Garden City, and Jean Gimple, a former Garden City resident now living in Phoenix. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Gordon Gimple.
Visitation hours are from 6 to 8 tonight and from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary, 295 N. Main St., Bountiful, UT 84010.
Joseph Scott Young
Joseph Scott Young, 84, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at La Jolla, Calif.
He was born Nov. 15, 1915, at Hutchinson, the son of Harry and Jean Young. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1933, from the University of Kansas as Phi Beta Kappa in 1937, graduated cum laude from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill., in 1940, and received his theology doctorate in 1965.
Mr. Young served as rector in Garden City, Norman, Okla., Wichita and Portland, Ore., was a chaplain at San Diego and a vicar at Borrego Springs, Calif., retiring in La Jolla.
He belonged to the Episcopal Church's National Executive Council and the St. Francis Boys Home board of directors at Ellsworth, was a director of the Wichita Council of Churches, was chaplain of the Oklahoma State Senate and was on the Oklahoma Juvenile Parole Board.
On June 12, 1940, he married Dorothy Mize at Atchison. She survives. He is also survived by two sons, Harry, Denver, and Chester, Zion, Ill.; a daughter, Judith, Portland; a sister, Rachel Kramer, Hutchinson; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Memorial service at Grace Episcopal Church, Hutchinson, followed by burial, is under the direction of Johnson & Sons Funeral Home, Hutchinson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Grace Church, Rector's Discretionary Fund, 2007 N. Main St., Hutchinson, KS 67501.
Herschel R. Walls
ULYSSES -- Herschel R. Walls, 44, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at his home in rural Grant County.
He was born Oct. 18, 1955, at Ulysses, the son of Charles C. and Betty J. (Carter) Walls.
A lifetime resident of Ulysses, he graduated from Ulysses High School and from Southwest Kansas Technical School at Liberal as a diesel mechanic.
Mr. Walls had farmed and had worked as a bus mechanic for USD 214, Ulysses. He belonged to Shelton Memorial Christian Church and the Grant County Sheriff's Department Reserves, both at Ulysses.
He is survived by his parents, Ulysses; three sisters, Marta Jackson, Deming, N.M., Mary Hamlin, Garden City, and Barbara Clark, Hutchinson; his grandmother, Bernice Carter, Ulysses; two nieces; and two nephews.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Shelton Memorial Christian Church, Ulysses, with the Rev. Bill Harrold officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.
Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses. Memorials to the donor's choice may be sent in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, KS 67880.
Bill Swearengen
Funeral for Bill Swearengen, 75, a former Garden City resident, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Franklin Bartley Chapel, Lubbock, Texas, with the Rev. Billy Ray Parmer officiating. Masonic graveside service will follow in Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park.
Mr. Swearengen died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at his home in Lubbock.
He was born Aug. 15, 1924, at Venus, Texas. He graduated from Pampa (Texas) High School.
On Aug. 20, 1947, he married Billie Carr at Amherst, Texas. She died in 1983. He married Sue Tilson on Aug. 5, 1983, at Las Vegas. She died in 1998.
Mr. Swearengen served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He owned and operated Swearengen Drilling Co. in Garden City from 1962 to 1980 and had lived in Lubbock since 1998, moving from Marble Falls, Texas.
He was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Abernathy, Texas; the Kansas Water Well Association; Masonic Tyrian Lodge No. 246, Finney Chapter No. 359 Order of the Eastern Star and the Kansas York Rite Chapter No. 83, Cmdry. No. 50, all at Garden City; the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J.; USA 32 degree Mason in Wichita; and the Midian Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. of Wichita.
He is survived by two sons, Mike Slattery, Phoenix, and Randy Swearengen, Lubbock; a daughter, Monte Swearengen, Austin, Texas; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Crutcher, Lubbock.

Reuben D. Koehn
MONTEZUMA -- Reuben D. Koehn, 79, of Dodge City, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Western Plains Regional Hospital in Dodge City.
He was born Oct. 9, 1920, at Isabella, Okla., the son of Dan and Lydia (Schmidt) Koehn.
A Dodge City resident since 1940, moving from McPherson, Mr. Koehn was the owner and operator of several area businesses. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of Faith Mennonite Church, Montezuma.
On Sept. 19, 1939, he married Frances Smith at Kinsley. She survives. He is also survived by four sons, Richard and Wes, both of Dodge City, Larry, Tulsa, Okla., and Marty, Sioux City, Iowa; two daughters, Vernia Omey, Alva, Okla., and Connie Scott, Cimarron; three sisters, Edna Harrison and Erma McReynolds, both of California, and Martha Smith, Dodge City; 14 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 1 p.m. Friday at Faith Mennonite Church, Montezuma, with the Rev. Val Krehbiel officiating. Burial will follow in North Mennonite Cemetery, Montezuma.
Helen Esther Harp
Funeral for Helen Esther Harp, 95, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Community Congregational Church, Garden City, with Dr. R. Michael Lake officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Garden City.
Mrs. Harp died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
Born Dec. 24, 1904, in Wirt County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the Rev. Samuel Austin and Mintia Mae (Wolfe) Fisher. Due to her father's ministry, the family lived in several locations, coming to Russell in 1911.
She graduated from Grand Junction (Colo.) High School in 1921. In 1922, the family returned to Kansas and she taught in country schools. In 1930, she received her bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado.
Mrs. Harp taught first grade at Johnson Elementary School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, from 1935 until moving to Garden City in 1945, where she managed the American Automobile Association office. In 1957, she became the Finney County librarian, a job she held until her retirement.
She was a past state chairman of the VFW Auxiliary, and a past chairwoman of the Southwest Kansas Library Association and the March of Dimes.
Mrs. Harp belonged to the National Safety Council, Finney County Safety Council, Women's Chamber of Commerce, National Education Association, Kansas Retired Teachers Association, Finney County Genealogy Club, Descendants of Hackers Creek Pioneers of West Virginia, the Jackson County (W.Va.) Historical Society and the Finney County Historical Society. Her special interests were reading, genealogy and researching Buffalo Jones.
On Dec. 24, 1952, she married William Lester Harp at Garden City. He died Sept. 11, 1999. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Chuck Fisher and Vernon Fisher; two infant brothers; and four sisters, Lavone Herrera, Jeanne Vogel, Connie Rammelsburg and Naomia Heltemes.
She is survived by a sister, Vernice Overfield, Shellsburg, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews including Mike Blake and Arlie DeFreese Jr., both of Garden City.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the Children's Library at the Finney County Public Library, in care of the funeral home.
