Dr. Francis G. Pike
SUBLETTE -- Dr. Francis G. Pike, 90, of Sublette, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit.
He was born Oct. 22, 1909, at Woodward, Okla., the son of Clyde and Effie (Goff) Pike. When he was 12, the family moved to the Drury area, where he attended grade school. He graduated in 1927 from South Haven High School and also graduated from Colvin Chiropractic College at Wichita.
On Sept. 30, 1931, he married Fern Hawkins at Medford, Okla. After their marriage, they lived in Wichita for 14 years. In July 1962, they moved from Howard to Sublette, where they owned and operated Pike Chiropractic Office. He was a chiropractor for more than 60 years before retiring.
Mr. Pike was a member of Sublette Southern Baptist Church, belonged to Gideons International for many years and was a member of the Kansas Chiropractic Association at Topeka since 1930. He loved his family and enjoyed traveling.
His wife died Nov. 27, 1993. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Beulah Holt; a grandson; a stepgrandson; and two great-grandchildren.
He is survived by a son, Johnnie Pike, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Edith Hale, Winfield, and Lois Shrimplin, Sublette; a sister, Elnora Mae Condit, Arkansas City; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Sublette Southern Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Smith officiating. Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery, Sublette.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Haskell County Funeral Home, Sublette. Memorials are suggested to Sublette Southern Baptist Church or Gideons International, both in care of the funeral home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.
Gayle A. Karkiainen
Gayle A. Karkiainen, 48, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born March 8, 1951, at Seattle, the daughter of Jack W. and An (Olson) Kirkwood. She graduated from Ballard High School in Seattle and received her certificate as a medical assistant from the College of Dental & Medical Assistants in Denver.
On June 26, 1970, she married Paul R. Karkiainen at Seattle. They lived in Sioux City, Iowa, from 1973 until 1975, while he worked in the IBP corporate office. They moved to Amarillo, Texas, in 1975 when he was appointed the quality assurance manager at the IBP plant there.
In 1985, they returned to Sioux City and he moved back into the corporate office. In 1997, they moved to Garden City, where he was the plant manager of the Finney County IBP plant.
Mrs. Karkiainen had worked as a medical assistant and was a homemaker. She enjoyed reading books, trips to the ocean, collecting sea gulls, cooking and listening to Neil Diamond music.
She is survived by her husband, of the home; a son, David Karkiainen, Des Moines, Iowa; her parents, Depoe Bay, Ore.; and two brothers, Larry Kirkwood, Seattle, and Gary Kirkwood, Depoe Bay.
Memorial service will be 4 p.m. this Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Randy Caddell officiating. A second memorial service is planned for 1 p.m. March 11 at Phinney Ridge Lutheran Church in Seattle.

Cletis F. Doughty
ULYSSES -- Cletis F. Doughty, 81, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born July 18, 1918, at Fellsburg, the son of John L. and Mary Belle (Ingraham) Doughty. A graduate of Centerview, he served in the U.S. Navy on a minesweeper.
Mr. Doughty had been a resident of Ulysses since 1948. He was a mechanic for John Deere, International Implements and Chevy. Until his retirement, he was employed as a mechanic and bus driver for USD 214, Ulysses. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
On Jan. 13, 1957, he married Clara Leola (Essex) Doughty at Winfield. She died June 30, 1991. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Louis Melvin Doughty and Eugene Cloise; and a sister, Lela Leona Doughty.
He is survived by a son, Larry, Casper, Wyo.; a daughter, Mary Hoffman, Irving, Texas; a brother, Loy D. Doughty, Las Vegas; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Ulysses, with Dr. Max Clayton officiating. Burial will follow in Ulysses Cemetery.
Visitation hours are from 2 to 8 tonight and Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Lung Association, in care of the funeral home, 405 W. Grant St., Ulysses, KS 67880.
Ralph Adolph Eyer
SYRACUSE -- Graveside service for Ralph Adolph Eyer, 78, was to be 2 p.m. MST today in Syracuse Cemetery, with the Rev. Gene Slack officiating.
Mr. Eyer died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart.
He was born Feb. 2, 1922, in Hamilton County, the son of Adolph and Helen (Dodson) Eyer. A Syracuse resident his entire life, he was a farmer and aerial crop duster, retiring in 1990.
On Sept. 7, 1947, he married Betty Sue Sims at Syracuse. She survives. He is also survived by a granddaughter; a grandson; and a sister, Josephine Fisher, San Jose, Calif. He was preceded in death by a son, Tom Eyer.
Greene-Fellers Funeral Home, Syracuse, was in charge of arrangements.
Pauline M. Garrison
Funeral for Pauline M. Garrison, 79, of Plains, was to be 2 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church, Plains, with the Rev. Vernon Maelzer officiating. Burial was to be in Graceland Cemetery, Meade.
Mrs. Garrison died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
She was born Feb. 26, 1920, in rural Meade, the daughter of Otto and Zola M. (Mathews) Borth. She graduated from Plains High School in 1937 and from Kansas State University in 1941.
A homemaker, she had been a former home economist in Edwards, Finney and Meade counties, and had served as a 4-H judge for several years. A resident of Meade County for most of her life, she was a member of the United Methodist Church and UMW, both at Plains, and of the Liberal Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
On July 28, 1946, she married George Henry Arnold at Philadelphia. He died May 17, 1949. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Jay Otto Borth.
On Sept. 20, 1952, she married Chester L. Garrison at Meade. He survives. She is also survived by a son, Roy Arnold, Liberal; a daughter, Pamela Eaves, Athens, Ala.; two stepsons, Dennis Garrison, of Lawrence, and Lee Garrison, Leavenworth; two brothers, Jim Borth, Plains, and Dean Borth, Meade; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorials are suggested to The Center for Basic Cancer Research of Kansas State University, in care of Fidler-Orme Mortuary, Box F, Meade, KS 67864.
Herman Richard Hoeme
Herman Richard Hoeme, 77, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Terrace Garden Care Center in Garden City.
He was born Feb. 7, 1923, at Pratt, the son of Oswalt F. and Mary (Hirt) Hoeme.
A Garden City resident since 1956, moving from Scott City, he was a farmer and stockman. He belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder and as chairman of the church building committee.
Mr. Hoeme was a former member of the Kansas Livestock Association and a former board member of Garden City Co-op and of Golden Plains Credit Union.
On May 15, 1949, he married Marabelle Joyce at Garden City. She survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Deandra Krug and Nancy McMillan, both of Garden City, and Marnie Unruh, Corpus Christi, Texas; a sister, Devora Chedister, Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sherri Hoeme; four brothers, Robert Hoeme, Andrew Hoeme, Paul Hoeme and Albert Hoeme; and a sister, Elsa Davey.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Lyle Steuhrenberg officiating. Burial will follow in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Visitation hours are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home, 620 N. Main St.
