Ervin T. Levens
SYRACUSE -- Ervin T. Levens, 92, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.
He was born Dec. 12, 1907, in Pratt County, the son of Peter Clark and Sarah Elizabeth (Kelley) Levens.
He moved from Pratt County to Hamilton County in 1931. A farmer and rancher, he was a charter member of the Syracuse Co-op.
On Aug. 23, 1927, he married Juva B. Hoff at St. John. She died Dec. 27, 1994. He was also preceded in death by a son, Allen; a daughter, Treva; and 10 brothers and sisters.
He is survived by two sisters, Opal Johnston, Syracuse, and Pearl Wait, Lexington, Mo.; two grandsons; three great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. MST Wednesday in Syracuse Cemetery, with the Rev. James Puckett officiating.
Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Greene Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to Hamilton County Extended Care Home, in care of the funeral home.
José Daniel Flores
Graveside service for José Daniel Flores, 2-month-old son of Sally Flores of Garden City, will be 1 p.m. Tuesday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating.
José died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.
He was born Nov. 13, 1999, at Garden City.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his grandparents, Doris Arispe and Andres Briseno, both of Garden City, and Pedro Flores, El Paso, Texas; and his great-grandmother, Julia Arispe, El Paso.
Lincoln L. Unruh
MONTEZUMA -- Lincoln L. Unruh, 101, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Bethel Home Inc., Montezuma.
He was born Oct. 13, 1898, in Marion County, the son of Isaac P. and Lena (Jantz) Unruh.
A farmer, he had lived in the Salem community in Haskell County since 1917 and moved to Bethel Home 11 years ago. He was a member of Salem Mennonite Church, Copeland.
On May 17, 1920, he married Elda Unruh at Enid, Okla. She died Jan. 7, 1993. He was also preceded in death by a son, Ezra Unruh, on Oct. 18, 1986; two grandsons; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Ezra Unruh, Harvey Unruh and Clyde Unruh; and two sisters, Minnie Unruh and Alda Dirks.
He is survived by eight sons, Marvin Unruh, Quinter, Leslie J. Unruh and Arnold W. Unruh, both of Copeland, Orlan L. Unruh, Dodge City, Norman Unruh, Macon, Miss., Charles R. Unruh, Ulysses, Delbert E. Unruh, Scio, Ore., and Gary L. Unruh, Hartley, Texas; eight daughters, Elsie M. Koehn, Montezuma, Irene Koehn, Galva, Lorene Nichols, Ladean Nightengale and Berniece Deann Koehn, all of Copeland, Celesta Koehn and Geneva Nightengale, both of Brooksville, Miss., and Nora Friesen, Aberdeen, Miss.; two brothers, Sam I. Unruh, Montezuma, and Dewey Unruh, Barnett, Mo.; two sisters, Susanna Koehn, Montezuma, and Myrtle M. Koehn, Livingston, Calif.; 68 grandchildren; 139 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Salem Mennonite Church, Copeland. Steve Unruh, Sam Unruh Jr. and Verle Yost, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Salem Mennonite Cemetery, Copeland.
Visitation hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and Wednesday, and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Montezuma Funeral Home, and from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Home Inc. Memorials are suggested to Bethel Home Inc., in care of the funeral home, Box 421, Montezuma, KS 67867.
George W. Sauer
LAKIN -- George W. Sauer, 77, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at his home in Kearny County.
He was born Feb. 16, 1922, at Lakin, the son of Jacob August and Lola E. (Brooks) Sauer. He attended school in Lakin.
A lifetime resident of the Kearny County area, Mr. Sauer was a farmer-stockman and had also worked on the gas line, as a carpenter, in irrigation sprinkler maintenance and as a feedlot cowboy. He was a disabled U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
He was a member of First Christian Church of Lakin and the Kearny County Saddle Club. He enjoyed rodeos, dancing, reading, traveling, working with cattle, and his grandchildren's activities.
On Dec. 14, 1943, he married Virginia Viola Tyree at Syracuse. He married Geraldine Elmore on June 15, 1985, at Liberal. She survives.
Other survivors are five sons, Mickey Sauer, Garden City, John Sauer, Syracuse, Richard Sauer, Pueblo, Colo., Kenny Sauer, Puyallup, Wash., and George Sauer Jr., Lakin; two daughters, Karen Burns, Lakin, and Joyce Rider, Ulysses; two stepsons, Larry Elmore, Kaw City, Okla., and Frank Lee Elmore, Charlotte, Mich.; a stepdaughter, Jeralyn Spielman, Liberal; a sister, Thelma Kisel, Lakin; 23 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Melvin Sauer, Michael Sauer and Jerome Sauer; and three sisters, Lena Swank, Sylvia Sauer and Delores Sauer.
Funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Lakin, with the Revs. William Salmon and Bill Harrold officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin. Memorials are suggested to Cimarron Family Care, in care of the funeral home.
John Arthur Pfaff
HOLCOMB -- Funeral for John Arthur Pfaff, 93, of McCracken, will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home, Ness City.
Mr. Pfaff died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony's Campus, Hays.
He was born Dec. 28, 1906, at Ellis, the son of Alston and Ella (Hannemann) Pfaff.
A farmer and stockman, Mr. Pfaff had been a resident of McCracken for 65 years. He was a member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church, Bazine.
On Aug. 28, 1934, he married Silvinia Hammerschmidt at Ellis. She died April 26, 1978. He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Mary Mask and Nancy Rose Pfaff; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He is survived by six sons, Walter, Banning, Calif., Leon, Ralph and Glenn, all of Brownell, Roy, McCracken, and Bennie, Yukon, Okla.; six daughters, Lucille Young, Ness City, Hazel Oppel, Kingfisher, Okla., Betty Miller, Ellinwood, Eileen Backstrom, Great Bend, Laura Morgan, McCracken, and Rebecca Kinyon, Holcomb; 37 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight and from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Grisell Memorial Long Term Care Center or St. Lukes Lutheran Church, both in care of the funeral home.
Martha Louise Mathews
TRIBUNE -- Funeral for Martha Louise Mathews, 98, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church, Tribune, with the Rev. Kathleen Dooley officiating. Burial will be in Greeley County Cemetery, Tribune.
Miss Mathews died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at Helmwood Care Home in Tribune.
She was born Sept. 29, 1901, in rural Greeley County, the daughter of Charles F. and Elisabeth B. (Mathews) Mathews. A lifetime resident of western Kansas, she was a retired school teacher having begun her career in 1918.
Miss Mathews was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Greeley County Historical Society, American Legion Auxiliary, Rebekah Lodge and Order of Eastern Star, all at Tribune, the Kansas National Education Association at Topeka, D.A.R., and the Society of Those Born in Sod Houses.
She is survived by three nieces, Edith Schmidt and Virginia Mathews, both of Tribune, and Helen Jean Helm, Cheyenne Wells, Colo.
Visitation hours are until 9 tonight at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Tribune. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Herbert Lyle Dougherty
Funeral for Herbert Lyle Dougherty, 80, will be 2 p.m. Friday at Word of Life Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Gary Don Newman officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Dougherty died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
He was born March 2, 1919, at Ozark, Mo., the son of M. Emery E. and Martha M. (Hill) Dougherty.
A Garden City resident since 1930, moving from Ozark, he was the retired manager of the Garden City Co-op elevator. He was a member of Word of Life Church and a charter member of the Garden Valley Good SAMS RV Club, both at Garden City.
On May 5, 1939, he married Ruth Winifred Lewman at Garden City. She died Dec. 24, 1992, at Garden City. He was also preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.
He is survived by two sons, Michael Dougherty and Steven Dougherty, both of Garden City; two daughters, Ruth Ann Sauer, Garden City, and Janet Davis, Hutchinson; a sister, Evelyn Bauer, Shallow Water; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
