Earnestine Kinney
Earnestine Kinney, 56, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
She was born March 12, 1943, at Ponta, Texas, the daughter of Whythyntys and Evelyn (Tatum) West. She grew up in Palestine, Texas, graduated from Holland (Texas) High School and attended secretary college at Abilene, Texas.
Mrs. Kinney worked at Pace Packing Co., Sweetwater, Texas, from 1970 to 1976. In 1977, she moved to Garden City and worked at Farmland Industries until 1981. In 1985, she went to work as a custodian for USD 457 in Garden City.
She was a member of Second Baptist Church and the VFW Auxiliary, and enjoyed bowling, playing bingo, dancing, playing and watching sports, and her grandchildren's activities. For many years, she cooked the VFW veterans holiday meals and was known for her holiday barbecue cooking.
She is survived by two sons, Charles Kinney and Orlando Kinney, both of Garden City; three stepsons, Donnie Haynes, Holcomb, Larry Jones, San Antonio, and Dwayne Jones, Lakin; a stepdaughter, Michelle Jones, Wichita; two brothers, Wiley West and David West, both of Sweetwater; a sister, Nellie Thompson, Garden City; and 14 grandchildren.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, Garden City, with the Rev. Robert Allen, Brother Roger Bradshaw and Linda Simms, evangelist, officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Bernice Armina Hatton
SYRACUSE -- Bernice Armina Hatton, 93, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at Hamilton County Extended Care Home in Syracuse.
She was born Dec. 9, 1906, at Syracuse, the daughter of Frank A. and Olga D. (Huber) Rees.
A lifetime Hamilton County resident, she graduated from Syracuse High School in 1924. In 1925, she passed the state teacher test and began teaching in a country school.
Mrs. Hatton taught school in Liberty Township, Kendall Township, at Nickerson School and Soddy View School. She had also worked as a bookkeeper for Inland Utilities Co., Syracuse, and was a longtime member of the Bear Creek Community Club.
On March 23, 1940, she married Ray Elmer Hatton at Syracuse. She and her husband then moved to a farm southwest of Syracuse, where they farmed until selling the farm in 1972 and moving back to town. He died Nov. 1, 1979. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, five brothers and one sister.
She is survived by two sons, G. Ray Hatton, Scottsdale, Ariz., and John Hatton, Hugoton; two daughters, Susan Westeman, Syracuse, and Sarah Cooper, Tulsa, Okla.; and six grandchildren.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. MST Monday at the First Presbyterian Church, Syracuse, with the Rev. Bob Goebel officiating. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery.
Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. MST Saturday and Sunday at Greene Funeral Home, Syracuse. Memorials are suggested to the Hamilton County Library or the Hamilton County Extended Care Facility, both in care of the funeral home.
Rachel Kae Whaley
Johnson -- Funeral for Rachel Kae Whaley, infant daughter of Scott G. and Lori (Fischer) Whaley, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Church of Christ, Ulysses, with the Rev. Paul Wingfield officiating. Burial will be in Stanton County Cemetery, Johnson.
Rachel died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, at Johnson.
She was born Nov. 1, 1999, at Liberal.
Survivors include her parents; a brother, Zachary Whaley, of the home; her grandparents, Gerald and Karen Fischer, Scranton, and the Rev. Charles and Bernice Whaley, Shawnee; her great-grandmother, Margaret Calvert, Osage City; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight at Garnand Funeral Home, Johnson, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 tonight. Memorials are suggested to the Ronald McDonald House, in care of the funeral home, 605 W. North Ave., Johnson, KS 67855.
Charles Jacob Franklin Rahm
LAKIN -- Funeral for Charles Jacob Franklin Rahm, 82, of Lakin, was to be 10:30 this morning at the United Methodist Church, Deerfield, with the Rev. Warren Hett officiating. Burial was to follow in Deerfield Cemetery.
Mr. Rahm died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin.
He was born June 30, 1917, at Enid, Okla., the son of Jacob and Hazel (Robinson) Rahm. He grew up in the areas of Enid and Kremlin, Okla., attended schools in Kremlin, graduated from high school in Enid in 1936, and attended college in Okmulgee, Okla.
On Sept. 18, 1942, he married Mary Bodenhamer at El Reno, Okla.
Mr. Rahm served in the U.S. Air Corp during World War II from 1943 to 1946. Most of his time in the service was spent in France. After the service, he returned to the Enid area where he began working for newspapers in the area.
In 1951, the Rahms moved to Liberal, where he worked for the Southwestern Daily Times, retiring in 1989. They returned to Enid in 1991 and moved to Lakin in 1997.
Mr. Rahm was a member of the First United Methodist Church, first in Kremlin and later in Enid. He enjoyed fishing, camping and doing handyman work.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Charla Grauberger, Deerfield; a brother, Henry "Hank" Rahm, Enid; and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Rahm.
Memorials are suggested to the High Plains Special Care Unit or the donor's choice, both in care of Garnand Funeral Home, Lakin.
Amelia 'Mela' Lopez
Vigil service for Amelia "Mela" Lopez, 65, will be 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, followed by rosary. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Lopez died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.
She was born April 23, 1934, at Garden City, the daughter of Jesus E. and Antonia (Bonilla) Ledesma, and attended Garden City schools.
A homemaker, she also worked at the Dixie Cafe for several years. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles and embroidery work.
Mrs. Lopez had been a resident of High Plains Retirement Village in Lakin since the late 1980s.
On Feb. 18, 1969, she married Lucio R. Lopez at Garden City. He died May 23, 1979. She was also preceded in death by two infant brothers; a brother, Ezequiel Ledesma; a sister, Sophia Garcia; and her stepfather, Abraham Campos.
She is survived by a son, Lucio Lopez Jr., Wichita; two daughters, Carmen Soto, Garden City, and Anita Razo, Lexington, Neb.; a brother, Jesus B. Ledesma, Garden City; six sisters, Columba Ramirez, Gloria Hernandez, Nieves Gallardo, Rutila Campos and Mary Medina, all of Garden City, and Raquel Lopez, Holcomb; 20 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.
Roby Barnes
Roby Barnes, 76, of New Meadows, Idaho, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at New Meadows.
He was born July 6, 1923, at Stoutland, Mo.
Mr. Barnes served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was active in the Senior Citizens Center in New Meadows and belonged to the New Meadows Valley Ridge Rider Snowmobile Club.
On Sept. 11, 1946, he married Letha Carney. He married Sharon Kilroy on April 18, 1999. She survives.
Other survivors are two sons, Mike Barnes and Al Barnes, both of California; two daughters, Katherine Starr, Washington, and Karen Wilson, Idaho; eight grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Barnes.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice, in care of the funeral home.
