Donald O. Newsome
Donald O. Newsome, 70, died Friday, Dec. 31, 1999, at Garden Valley Retirement Village.
Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Garnand Funeral Home. Burial will be in Ingalls Cemetery.
Mr. Newsome was born Jan. 27, 1929, in Garden City, the son of Charles and Mary Newsome.
In 1953, he married Annabelle Mader in Garden City.
A lifetime resident of Finney County, Newsome attended Pierceville schools. He worked as a rancher, auctioneer, and mostly as a disc roller. He was also a certified reflexogolist.
He had a special interest in rodeos and rode bulls in his younger years. He was involved in the founding of Crossroads in Garden City.
Mr. Newsome was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, Rodeo Cowboys Association and the National Rifle Association.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Keith Newsome and Phillip Newsome.
Mr. Newsome is survived by three sons, Mike Newsome, Golden, Colo., and Mark Newsome and Matt Newsome, both of Garden City; two daughters, Cindy Piland, Garden City, and Pat Smith, Douglas, Ariz.; a brother, Robert Newsome, Andover; a sister, Charlotte Newsome, Albuquerque, N.M.; seven grandsons; four granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation hours are 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, and 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Garnand Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to Crossroads in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
Beatrice Ham
PAOLI, Okla. -- Beatrice Ham, 86, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, in Oklahoma City.
She was born April 20, 1913, in Breckenridge, Texas, to J.M. and Sybil Carrie Rickels.
Mrs. Ham grew up in west Texas and graduated from Woodson High School in Woodson, Texas. In 1949, she and her husband, Lewis, made their home in Fitzhugh, Okla. In 1955 they moved to Pauls Valley, Okla.
She was a member and past president of the Oklahoma Women's Farm Bureau, in which she was active at the state and national levels. She was also a member of the Country Women of the World, National Cowboy Hall of Fame, and Pauls Valley and Paoli Church of Christ.
Mrs. Ham is preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Alvin and Jewell Rickels; and two sisters, Agnes Spain and Johnnie Ray.
She is survived by two sons, Rick Ham, Blanchard, Okla., and J.R. Ham, Garden City; three grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Paoli Cemetery
under the direction of the Wooster Funeral Home. Fred Butler will be officiating.

Jessie P. Castanon
Jessie P. Castanon, 60, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital in Wichita.
She was born June 16, 1939, in Raton, N.M., the daughter of Ezekiel and Mary (Tafoya) Vigil.
On Sept. 26, 1977, she married Luis C. Castanon in Scott City. A Garden City resident since 1977, she was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and sang with the Spanish choir.
She enjoyed playing bingo, cooking, gardening, and translating.
Mrs. Castanon was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.
She is survived by her husband; two sons, Matthew Trujillo and Frank A. Castanon, both of Garden City; four brothers, Raymond Vigil, Johnny Vigil, Bobby Tafoya and Gilbert Montano, all of La Junta, Colo.; four sisters, Ida Tafoya, Mabel Raso and Dorothy Soto, all of La Junta, and Irene Garcia, Denver; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A Spanish rosary will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Mary Catholic Church.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. MST Monday at the First Assembly of God Church in La Junta. The Rev. Darryl Johnson will be officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, La Junta.
Calling hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Memorials are to the donor's choice in care of Garnand Memorial Funeral Home.
Lawrence Joe Hatcher
ULYSSES -- Lawrence Joe Hatcher, 63, a former resident of Ulysses, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at Bethany Nursing Home in Denver.
Born Oct. 6, 1936, at Ulysses, he was the son of W.A. "Bill" and Esta Hatcher. He lived in Ulysses until he was 18, then lived in Larned, Colorado and California before returning to Colorado when he was 45.
He is survived by a sister, Delorse Prater, Garden City; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.
A memorial service was Dec. 31 at Phillips United Methodist Church, Lakewood, Colo., with the Rev. Marvin Essing officiating.
All-States Cremation, Wheat Ridge, Colo., was in charge of arrangements.
Joyce A. Bezona
Johnson -- Joyce A. Bezona, 61, of Johnson, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2000, at Stanton County Long Term Care Unit in Johnson.
She was born Feb. 24, 1938, at Johnson, the daughter of Clarence Edward and Hazel Blanche (Amen) Morris.
On March 31, 1956, she married Richard E. "Dick" Bezona at Clayton, N.M. He died Sept. 3, 1997. She was also preceded in death by her father.
Mrs. Bezona had lived in Johnson; Buena Vista, Colo.; and Syracuse. She had worked as a cook, as a CMA at the Stanton County Hospital and Long Term Care Unit and at the Hamilton County Long Term Care Unit. A homemaker, she was a member of TOPS.
She is survived by her mother, Johnson; two sons, Ed Bezona, Manter, and Blake Bezona, Johnson; a daughter, Debbie Herron, Manter; two brothers, Clarence "Ark" Morris Jr. and Mearl Morris, both of Johnson; two sisters, Betty Barber, Johnson, and Judy Figgins, Ulysses; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Home Chapel, Johnson, with the Rev. Charles Rowley officiating. Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery.

John Stewart Newlin
John Stewart Newlin, 88, a former Garden City resident, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2000, at Tucson, Ariz.
He was born Oct. 29, 1911, at Wichita, the son of Harvey Earl and Elmina (Stewart) Newlin.
He attended Southwest High School in Kansas City and Shattuck School in Faribault, Minn. After three years at the University of Kansas, he traveled in Europe, graduating from KU in 1958, the same year as his son.
He pursued a career in journalism and politics and had worked for newspapers in Arkansas City and Shawnee, Okla., before going to New York City to write freelance. He then was managing editor of the Garden City Telegram. After working with the Associated Press in Kansas City, he became the leader of the AP at Topeka.
Mr. Newlin was appointed public relations director of the Kansas Highway Commission by Gov. Frank Carlson. In 1950, he served as executive secretary to Kansas Governor Arn, and in 1952 was publicity director for People for Eisenhower in Washington, D.C.
After Eisenhower consented to run, Newlin became assistant to the campaign's press secretary, James Hagerty. He declined an offer to become assistant to White House Press Secretary Hagerty, choosing to return to Kansas. He was then editor and publisher of the Wellington Daily News.
Mr. Newlin was president of the Kansas Press Association, receiving its Distinguished Service Award, and was a Kansas delegate to a Republican convention. In the early 1960s, he served as a consultant to the Presidential Commission on U.S. Government Security.
After selling the Wellington newspaper, he taught journalism courses and wrote public relations materials for the Endowment Association at KU for several years before establishing a farm outside of Lawrence, raising Arabian horses and Angus cattle. Most recently, he had resided in Ottawa before moving to Arizona.
He is survived by a daughter, Donna Wager, Antioch, Calif.; a son, John Harve Newlin, Ottawa; two stepsons, Mark Miller, Bisbee, Ark., and Robert Miller, Duncan, Okla.; a sister, Nancy Newlin Ashton, and a brother, Richard F. Newlin, both of Shawnee Mission; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Nan Sizemore Newlin, Margaret Halloran Newlin and Dorothy Miller Newlin; a brother, Donald E. Newlin; a stepsister, Mary Kay Fothergill; a stepbrother, Houston Frith; and an infant son, Bruce Edward.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Day Funeral Home, Wellington, followed by burial in Prairie Lawn Cemetery.
