Reyes Mendez Ortiz
Reyes Mendez Ortiz, 33, of 611 Garden City Ave., Apt. No. 3, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
The son of Andres and Antonia (Mendez) Ortiz, he was born Jan. 6, 1966, at El Rancho Palo Blanco, Chihuahua, Mexico, and came to Garden City in 1995.
Mr. Ortiz was employed as a roofer for Weathercraft Roofing for the past five years. He enjoyed working on cars, listening to music, and being around his family and friends.
He and Rosa Hernandez were married in 1996 at Garden City. She survives. Other survivors are a son, Mario Hernandez, and a grandson, both of Garden City; and his parents, two brothers and two sisters, all of Chihuahua. He was preceded in death by a brother.
Funeral and burial is planned for later in El Rancho Palo Blanco.
Visitation hours are 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.
Howard R. Lang
DIGHTON -- Howard R. Lang, 91, of Dighton, died Monday, Nov. 29, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
He was born Aug. 18, 1908, at Garden City, the son of Charles and Melinda (Warnken) Lang.
He moved from Barton County to the Pendennis area in 1922 and later moved to a farm north of Shields. He then moved to a farm close to Dighton and later moved into Dighton.
A lifelong farmer/stockman in Gove and Lane counties, his special interests were flying and making jewelry from his rock collection. He was a member of First Christian Church of Dighton, a Paul Harris Fellow of Dighton Rotary Club, and belonged to the Rock & Gem Club of Garden City.
On Aug. 5, 1931, he married Edith F. North at Dighton. She survives.
Other survivors are a son, Victor Lang, Wichita; a brother, Dean Lang, Hutchinson; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a son, David Lang; and two brothers, George Lang and Marion Lang.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church, Dighton, with the Revs. Mike Grogan and Kerry Grogan officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Boomhower Funeral Home, Dighton. Memorials are suggested to the church, in care of the funeral home.
Alfred G. 'Fritz' Weigel
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Fidelis Catholic Church, Victoria, for Alfred G. 'Fritz' Weigel, 83, who died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at Hays Medical Center, St. Anthony Campus, Hays.
The father of former Garden City resident Agnes Weigel, Mr. Weigel was born Dec. 28, 1915, in Victoria to John I. and Margaret (Braun) Weigel. He married Mary A. Hammerschmidt on Nov. 20, 1939, in Victoria. She died Jan. 24, 1999. He was a construction worker and worked for Hunter Construction and Pierce-Schippers Construction. He spent his lifetime in the Victoria area.
Mr. Weigel is survived by his six daughters, Agnes and Norma J. Weigel, both of Hays, Theresa Klaus and Betty Denning, both of Victoria, Twila Weigel, Hill City, and Estella Weigel, Salina; five brothers, Edwin Weigel of Hays, Erwin Weigel, LeRoy Weigel and Leo Weigel, all of Salina, Norbert Weigel of Ogallah; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife; by a son, Alfred Thomas Weigel; a daughter, Kathleen Weigel; three brothers, Harold, Alvin and Earl Weigel; and five sisters, Sabina Jones, Eleanor Wenger, Amelia Collins, Irene Rohleder and Lioba Weigel.
Vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday, followed by rosary at 8, both at Cline's Mortuary, 412 Main St., Victoria. Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday and 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

William Raymond Schwartz
William Raymond Schwartz, 78, of Ashland died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 1999, at Ashland Health Center. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Church of Ashland with the Rev. Roy Spurnger officiating. Interment will be at Highland Cemetery, Ashland.
Mr. Schwartz was born Dec. 8, 1920, the son of Albert William and Ava Jane (Fox) Schwartz. He was a lifetime resident of Ashland and worked for Northern Natural Gas Company. He married Margaret Elizabeth Epp on Sept. 4, 1954, in Newton. She survives. He is also survived by a son, William E. Schwartz of Amarillo, Texas; and by two grandchildren.
Calling time is 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Wyatt Funeral Home in Ashland.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Church of God, Ashland, through the funeral home.
Marian Jo Johnson
DEERFIELD -- Marian Jo Johnson, 70, of Deerfield, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at her home. Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Deerfield with the Rev. Warren Hett officiating. Burial will be at Deerfield Cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson was born Oct. 7, 1929, at Garden City to John Maurice and Evelyn L. (Smith) McNellis. She married Jim Johnson on Aug. 22, 1948, at Deerfield. A lifetime resident of Deerfield, she graduated with the class of 1947 from Deerfield High School and attended Garden City Community College. She was a homemaker and very involved with her church and community activities. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Deerfield and United Methodist Women. Her special interests were attending sporting events in which her family was involved and sewing for family members. She was preceded in death by her father and by her stepfather, Harry Jones.
She is survived by her husband; by three sons, James H. Johnson of Garden City, John K. Johnson of Baldwin City, and Mac Andrew Johnson, Lubbock, Texas; by her mother, Evelyn L. Jones of Lawrence; a brother, Jesse Manley McNellis of Lawrence; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Dorothy J. Chaloupek
LAKIN -- Dorothy J. Chaloupek, 73, of Lakin died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin. Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Canton Cemetery
in Canton, Okla. with the Rev. Mike McReynolds officiating.
Mrs. Chaloupek was born Dec. 29, 1925, at Des Ark, Ark., the daughter of James and Linda (Scott) Gillum. She married Bert Chaloupek in 1951 at Longdale, Okla. He died Sept. 1, 1985. A homemaker, Mrs. Chaloupek first moved to Lakin in 1966, then returned there in 1975. Her special interests were sewing and baking. She was also preceded in death by her parents; six brothers; two sisters; and a grandson, Scotty Chaloupek.
She is survived by three sons, Steve Chaloupek of Liberal, Bert E. Chaloupek of Great Bend, and Billy Joe Chaloupek of Harlan, Ind.; a sister, Genevieve Rauh of Longdale, Okla.; six grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren.
Visitation will be until 8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin.

Donald W. Burden
LAKIN -- Donald W. Burden, 93, of Lakin, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Lakin with the Rev. William Salmon officiating. Interment will be in Lakin Cemetery.
Mr. Burden was born July 30, 1906, at Englevale of James Lewis and Agnes Belle (Carlin) Burden. He married Carol K. Steward Aug. 14, 1934, at Ulysses. She died March 6, 1978. He married Dorothy Heinitz on July 4, 1988, at Lakin.
He attended school at Fellsburg and high school at Salina. Mr. Burden moved to the family homestead in Kearny County in 1921, where he was a lifelong farmer-stockman in Kearny County and also did welding for area farmers. His special interests were playing pool, bowling, dancing and restoring antique tractors. For many years he played on the Menno Community baseball town team and especially enjoyed watching baseball.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Burden; and two sisters, Geraldine Tysar and Beulah Harsha. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Burden; by a son, Jerry Burden of Lakin; a daughter, Judy Van Riper of Lyons; a stepson, Robert Heinitz of Lakin; a stepdaughter, Carol Carter of Cheney; a sister, Blanche Salyer of Garden City; five grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandcghildren.
Visiting hours are noon to 8 p.m. today, and 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin.
