Sophia Ledesma Marroquin
Vigil service for Sophia Ledesma Marroquin, 37, of Garden City, will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Garden City. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Joseph Bahr as celebrant. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mrs. Marroquin died Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
The daughter of Jesus B. and Angela H. (Hernandez) Ledesma, she was born Sept. 9, 1962, at Garden City. She attended St. Dominic School and graduated from Garden City High School in 1980 and from Garden City Community College in 1982.
She worked as a secretary for USD 457 before marrying Alfred Marroquin on Aug. 9, 1986, at Garden City. She then worked as a legal secretary and at the public defender's office. She most recently was employed by Kennedy & Coe Accounting Firm.
Mrs. Marroquin was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church and the Altar Society. Her special interests were needle work, cross stitching, gardening, baking, bowling and attending dances.
She is survived by her husband; her parents, Garden City; a brother, Leo C. Ledesma, Garden City; two sisters, Theresa L. Encinias, La Junta, Colo., and Valarie Ledesma, Garden City; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
Visitation hours are until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City.
Fernando 'Freddie' Valverde
Evening service for Fernando "Freddie" Valverde, 34, of 1512 A St., was 7 p.m. Sunday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Stil Guerrero officiating.
Funeral was 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Garden City, with the Rev. James E. Baker officiating. Burial followed in Valley View Cemetery, Garden City.
Mr. Valverde died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita, from injuries suffered in an accidental shooting.
He was born Nov. 21, 1965, at Chillicothe, Texas, the son of John V. and Francisca E. (Guebara) Valverde. He and his parents came from Vernon, Texas, to Garden City in 1968 and he attended schools here.
Mr. Valverde had worked as a laborer for various places. His hobbies were collecting coins and eagles, fishing, working on cars and spending time with his family.
On March 12, 1984, he married Nona Michelle Tresner at Garden City. She survives.
He is also survived by a daughter, Shai Valverde, of the home; his parents, Garden City; two brothers, John Valverde Jr. and Frank Valverde, both of Garden City; three sisters, Janie Laurelez and Sophia Eichhorn, both of Garden City, and Carlota Encarnacion, Atlanta; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, was in charge of arrangements.
Esther A. Nichols
Esther A. Nichols, 97, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999, at Terrace Garden Care Center, Garden City. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. Donald E. Carter officiating. Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. in Copeland Cemetery, Copeland. Calling times are noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to service time Thursday, all at Garnand Funeral Home.
Mrs. Nichols was born April 13, 1902, in Garden City, the daughter of Christopher J. and Martha Agnes (Wiedner) Degenhart. She moved with her family to Copeland, where she attended school, graduating from high school. She moved to Thayer, and there married Velmer J. Nichols on May 27, 1929. They moved to a farm north of Garden City in 1929 and lived there until 1981 when Esther moved to Garden City, where she has lived since. She attended church at the First Christian Church in Garden City, and was a member of the Senior Center. Mrs. Nichols enjoyed cooking and baking.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died May 16, 1973. She was also preceded in death by her parents; by two sons, Leroy Nichols and Pete Nichols; an infant daughter, Martha Nichols; two brothers; and two sisters.
She is survived by four sons, Melvin Nichols, Joe Nichols of Garden City, Jim Nichols of Garden City, and Bev Nichols of Holcomb; a sister, Gladys Brown of South Bend, Ind.; 15 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be directed to the Senior Center in care of the funeral home.
Glen Edward Peck
Glen Edward Peck, 65, died Friday, Nov. 26, 1999, at his home in Garden City following a lengthy illness. Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Peacock-Wood Funeral Home, 2009 S. 4th St., Lamar, Colo., with the Rev. Gayland Aubrey, Church of the Nazarene, Lamar, officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Lamar. Visitation will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday until service time at the funeral home.
Mr. Peck was born April 6, 1934, in Genoa, Colo., of Marion and Nona (Brown) Peck. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Peck, Garden City; by five sons, Vernon Peck of Garden City, Robert Peck of Onslow, Iowa, Billy Peck of Lansing, Danny Peck of Dodge City, and Heath Peck of Garden City; by 12 grandchildren; by a sister, Bertha Hollaway of Lamar, Colo.; a brother, Donald Peck of Limon, Colo.; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents.
John Washington Turner
John Washington Turner, 86, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 1999, at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City.
He was born Sept. 29, 1913, in Hoxie, the son of H.R. and Fama (Daniels) Turner. He was a family physician in Marion and Wichita before moving to Garden City in 1947. There, he practiced medicine until he retired.
On Dec. 22, 1938, he married Dorothy Kraisinger at LaCrosse. She died Oct. 4, 1996, in Garden City.
He was a member of the Community Congregational Church, Garden City. He also belonged to the Kansas University Alumni Association, the Kansas Medical Society and was a life master with the American Contract Bridge League.
Survivors include two sons, Terry Turner and Richard Turner, both of Garden City; one daughter, Gayle Vaughn of Denver; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services are at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at Community Congregational Church, the Rev. Mike Lake officiating. Interment will be in Valley View Cemetery.
Calling times are 1 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Price & Sons Funeral Home, Garden City. Memorials may be given to the Kansas University Medical School Endowment Fund in care of the funeral home.
Silver Schiffelbein
Rosary for Silver Schiffelbein, 73, of Wichita, will be 7 tonight at Downing & Lahey Mortuary East Chapel, Wichita. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Church of the Magdalen, Wichita.
Mr. Schiffelbein, a retired Cessna electrical technician, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999.
He was born Dec. 31, 1925, at Ness City, the son of Joseph and Margaret (Wendler) Schiffelbein.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; a son, Gary, Wichita; a daughter, Loretta Siemers, Derby; two stepsons, Robert K. Carnahan, Tucson, Ariz., and Clifford E. Carnahan, Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Casper Schiffelbein, Garden City; three sisters, Sister Paulette Schiffelbein, Moore, Okla., Teri Howell, Kent, Wash., and Martina Schiffelbein, Cottonwood Falls; three grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

Lena Mae Davis
SATANTA -- Lena Mae Davis, 78, of Satanta, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Campus, Wichita.
She was born Aug. 24, 1921, at Hooker, Okla., the daughter of Adlai and Mary Lucinda (Orrell) Decker.
A lifetime resident of the area, she was a member of Church of Christ, Satanta. A homemaker, she enjoyed her family activities. She also enjoyed arts and crafts and was a cake decorator.
On April 17, 1941, she married LeRoy R. Davis at Satanta. He survives.
Other survivors are two sons, Jackie G. Davis, Sublette, and LeRoy A. Davis, Wichita; four brothers, Alva Decker and Lloyd Decker, both of Satanta, Gene Decker, Albuquerque, N.M., and Dale Decker, Hugoton; three sisters, Betty Hale, Houghton, La., Ruth Dale and Mary Lou Alexander, both of Westminister, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Ray Dean Davis, in 1994; and by a brother, Marion Decker.
Graveside service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Dudley Township Cemetery, Satanta, with the Rev. Gerald Stewart officiating.
