GRADY W. MCDANIEL JR.

Master Sgt. Grady William McDaniel Jr., 74, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004.

He was born Dec. 3, 1930, in Thomaston, Ga.

He married Anna Jean Vangieson in February 1973 in Jacksonville, Fla. She survives.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950 and served in the infantry, military police and military intelligence branches. He was a 23-year veteran serving in Germany, Puerto Rico, Canal Zone, Korea, Vietnam and various state-side assignments.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Cross.

He was active in the Big Brothers program. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, with Blue Lodge membership in Lawton, Okla., and Cosistory in McAlester, Okla. He was also a member of the Red Baron Ambucs.

Other survivors include three sisters, Myrtle Awtrey, Smyrna, Ga., Genesta Duncan, Colquitt, Ga., and Joyce Hensen, Conyers, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three sisters.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church of the Cross in Salina.

Private burial will be in Crest Lawn Memorial Park in Atlanta.

There will be no visitation.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the church.

FRANK PIFER

Frank Pifer, 82, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at Southwest Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 24, 1951, to Fred L. and Ina Hatcher Pifer in Kimbell County, Neb.

He married Lorena E. Simmons Sept. 26, 1949, in Lamar, Colo. She survives.

He worked in construction in Florida. He was a postal clerk and carrier for seven years. In 1959, he bought the Alenes's Cafe, which he operated for 15 years. In 1974, he began The Place to Eat Cafe, which he operated for 13 years.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a tank mechanic.

He was a life member of the V.F.W. Lane Day Post No. 3166 in Liberal.

Other survivors include one son, John Pifer, Liberal; one daughter, Marie Wyer and husband Jackie, Liberal; three grandchildren, Delaini, Lacey and Linsay Farris; two great-grandchildren, Victoria and Amaya; and two brothers, Harvey Pifer, Battleground, Wash., and Charles Pifer, Glen Falls, N.Y.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, George and Jack Pifer, and one sister, Ila Roderick.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Miller Chapel with Paul Boles presiding.

Burial with military honors by the Fort Riley Honor Guard will be in Liberal Cemetery.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 a.m. to service time Thursday at Miller Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association in care of the mortuary.

HERSCHEL WEBBER

SUBLETTE -- Herschel Webber, 86, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at St. John Hospital in Tulsa, Okla.

He was born May 20, 1918, to Grant Herschel and Anna E. (Brier) Webber in Seward County.

He married Cecyle LaFawn Pennington Dec. 14, 1945, in Sublette. She died Sept. 27, 1999.

He served his country in World War II in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the Christian Church, past elder and chairman of the building committee.

He was a member of the Sublette American Legion Post No. 205.

He loved his family and enjoyed being with them.

Survivors include three sons, Howard Herschel Webber, Tulsa, Okla., Timothy Charles Webber and wife Virginia, Sublette, and Scot Albert Webber and wife Nancy, Oklahoma City; one daughter, Leann LaFawn Morgan and husband Steve, Tulsa, Okla.; eight grandchildren, Grant Webber and wife Rhesa, Eric Webber and wife Jessica, Chase Webber, Jeremy Webber, Haley Webber, Parker Morgan, Benjamin Webber and Amy Linn Webber; two great-grandchildren, Brecken Webber and Clarysa Webber; and many relatives and friends.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, his step father, Albert McLeod, and one sister, Doris Arnett.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Christian Church in Sublette with Minister David Erwin presiding.

Military graveside services will be conducted by Sublette American Legion Post No. 205.

Burial will be in Haskell County Cemetery in Sublette.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Haskell County Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Christian Church, Sublette American Legion, Pride of Life or Sublette EMTs, all of Sublette, and may be mailed to Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

ROXANNA L. BIRNEY

SATANTA -- Roxanna Lea Birney, 51, died Sunday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Via Christi Regional Medical Center - St. Francis Campus in Wichita.

She was born Aug. 25, 1953, to Royale and Aldeine (Boyer) Boynton in Gardner, Maine.

She first married Al Woods. He died Aug. 28, 1985.

She then married Milan Birney July 17, 1982. She survives.

She was a homemaker and worked for Satanta schools for two years.

Her hobbies were crafts.

Other survivors include her mother; two sons, Michael Woods, Garden City, and Nick Woods, Omaha, Neb.; two daughters, Victoria Woods, Garden City, and Christy Boynton; two brothers, Harry Boynton, Saugus, Mass., and Eddie Boynton, Saugus, Mass.; one sister, Barbara Boynton, Orange, Mass.; and many relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Satanta with Pastor Randy Dirrim presiding.

Burial will be in Dudley Township Cemetery in Satanta.

The family prefers close family and friends at the service.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church in Satanta and may be mailed to Haskell County Funeral Home, Box 607, Sublette, KS 67877.

RUMALDO BAEZA JR.

SATANTA -- Rumaldo Baeza Jr., 71, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

He was born Oct. 3, 1933, to Rumaldo and Rosa (Sanchez) Baeza Sr. in San Antonio, Mexico.

He married Maria R. Delatorre Oct. 27, 1967, in Mexico. She survives.

He worked at feedyards as a general laborer.

Other survivors include four sons, Juan Baeza, Satanta, Samuel Baez, Deerfield, Homero Baeza and wife Shasta Ann, Satanta, and Herman Baeza and wife Kristy, Las Cruces, N.M.; three daughters, Magdalena Lopez and husband Rolando, Anna, Texas, Belem Rey and husband Sergio, Satanta, and Anna Lilia Vera and husband Victor, Ryus; 10 grandchildren; five brothers, Efren Baeza, Artesia, N.M., Marcelo Baeza, Seven Rivers, N.M., Atanacio Baeza, Atoko, N.M., Ismael Baeza, Van Horn, Texas, and Gilberto Baeza, Carlsbad, N.M.; two sisters, Petra Franco, Roswell, N.M., and Alicia Lozano, Van Horn, N.M.; and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Grant County Funeral Home in Ulysses with Minister Librado Delao presiding.

Burial will be in Ulysses Cemetery.

Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

VERNON L. MINNS

HILLSBORO -- Vernon L. Minns, 80, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Hillsboro Community Medical Center in Hillsboro.

He was born July 30, 1924, to Paul and Frieda Fisher Minns in McPherson.

He married Helen Winter July 7, 1946, in Galva. She died Nov. 18, 1979.

He then married Shirley Brumm Blackwell May 10, 1981, in Branson, Mo. She survives.

He attended McPherson High School.

He was a retired oil field worker, farmer and salesman and former owner of Canton Recreation.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was member of Tampa Lutheran Church in Tampa.

He was a member of Canton American Legion Post No. 192 and McPherson V.F.W. He was also a former mayor and councilman for the city of Lehigh.

Other survivors include two foster sons, Vernon C. Henry, Hillsboro, and Roger Colgin, Canton; and one sister, Betty Dickinson, Roseburg, Ore.

He was also preceded in death by one son, Jack Kendal Minns, one brother, Lester Minns, and two sisters, Pauline Reeves and Deloris Rabey.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Lehigh Township Cemetery in Lehigh with the Rev. Clark Davis presiding.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Olson's Mortuary in Canton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston or St. Jude's Children's Hospital in care of Olson's Mortuary.
