SUSIE A. BURRIS
SATANTA Susie Agnes Burris, 88, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2004, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit.
She was born May 9, 1916, to Bill and Lucy (McKenzie) VanWinkle in Trego County.
She married James Wayne "Shorty" Burris Aug. 31, 1948, in Ness City. He died Dec. 31, 1988.
She was a homemaker.
She enjoyed visiting.
Survivors include one son, Rodney Jay Burris, Satanta; one sister, Daisy Richolson, Salina; and many relatives and friends.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, one son, Terry Lynn Burris, three brothers, Ernest, Ray and Clyde VanWinkle, and three sisters, Edith Mauch, Vina Dennis and Iona Beamer.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Dudley Township Cemetery
in Satanta with Minister Ray Tweed presiding.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

GERTRUDE E. BRANDES
OVERBROOK Gertrude Elizabeth Brandes, 87, died Monday, Nov. 8, 20004, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Lawrence.
She was born Nov. 18, 1916, to Bernhardt and Bertha Louise (Kunkel) Huebner in Laverne, Okla.
She married Coy Brandes July 6, 1942, in Raton, N.M. He died Jan. 7, 1984.
She worked as the deli manager of Ideal Food Stores in Liberal.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Liberal.
Survivors include one son, Allen Brandes and wife Linda, Lawrence; one step son, Warren Brandes and wife Sherry, Wichita; one daughter, Gwen Hillis and husband Gary, Wichita; six grandchildren, Matthew Brandes, Melissa Brandes, Leslie Bradley and husband Barry and Angela Valadez and husband Patrick; three step grandsons, Jay, Greg and Michael Brandes; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, O.J. "Hip" Huebner and Fred Huebner.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Andrew Wehling presiding.
Burial will be in Liberal Cemetery.
Friend may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday with the family to greet friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home.

VONDELL D. LEWIS
ELKHART Vondell Dwayne Lewis, 72, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart.
He was born Aug. 11, 1932, to Adrian Orby and Myrtle Mae (Lindsey) Lewis.
He married Oretha May Ayres Dec. 24, 1951, in Borger, Texas. She survives.
He was owner and manager of Elkhart Locker.
He was a past member of Odd Fellows Lodge in Johnson and served on both the Girl Scout and Boy Scout councils.
He enjoyed spending time at the Cimarron National Grasslands and fishing.
Other survivors include two sons, Randy Lewis and wife Kay and Terry Lewis and wife Liz, all of Elkhart; one daughter, Ralene Powell and husband Kent, Elkhart; six grandchildren, Brandon Lewis and wife Heather, Chad Lewis, Melissa Tucker and husband Jim, LaTisha Hasting and husband Patrick, Loni Rae Gilbert and Hallie Powell; seven great-grandchildren, Drake, Brady and Kailyn Lewis, Macy Tucker, Jaxon and Oakley Hasting and Simeon Wassam; two brothers, Lowell Dean Lewis, Pampa, Texas, and Adrien Thurman Lewis, Mena, Ark.; and one sister, Jennie Lou Gibson, Stinett, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Eddie Reece Lewis.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Garnand Funeral Chapel in Elkhart with the Rev. Gary Irvin presiding.
Burial will follow in Elkhart Cemetery.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart.

EDNA E. LESLIE
Edna E. Leslie, 87, died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at Liberal Good Samaritan Center.
She was born Oct. 1, 1917, to Edward C. and Elva Mae Stutzman Douglass in Modoc.
She married Earl P. Leslie in 1944 in Scott City. He preceded her in death.
She worked in housekeeping.
Survivors include one daughter, Randea Kah Frydendall and husband Jackie, Liberal; six grandchildren, Tab Frydendall, Staci Frydendall Marrs, Chanelle Frydendall, Katrina Lauppe, Darby Frydendall and Kinnee Kahlee Frydendall; eight great-grandchildren, Trista Marrs, Brandon Frydendall, Trevin Marrs, Joshua Frydendall, Erica Lauppe, Becca Frydendall, Alerca Lauppe and Blake Frydendall; and one great-great-grandson, Kyson Marrs Ells.
Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Liberal Good Samaritan Center.

FRIEDA LOFLAND
Frieda Lofland, 96, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at her residence in rural Seward County.
She was born Jan. 11, 1908, to August J. and Mienna Huebner Winkler in The Grove, Texas.
She married Arthur L. Lofland Dec. 31, 1932, in Garden City. He died Nov. 15, 1943.
She attended school at the Green Valley School near Liberal.
She was a farmer and rancher.
She was a member of the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church.
She was a member of the Dorcus Society and Blue Belle Home Extension Unit and was a board member of the Fargo Township Election Board.
Survivors include one son, Udell Lofland and wife Terry, Liberal; two daughters, Harriett Arnett and husband Richard, Liberal, and Myrna Smith, Manhattan; nine grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and one brother, Martin Winkler and wife Lucille, Tyrone, Okla.
She was also preceded her in death by her parents, four brothers, one sister, one daughter, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Andrew Wehling presiding.
Burial will be in Liberal Cemetery.
Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at Miller Mortuary.

EDWARD SCHIELD
Edward Schield, 65, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at Southwest Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 9, 1938, to Pete and Ruby Hoskinson Schield in Plains.
He married Shirley J. Pierson Feb. 8, 1957, in Plains. She died Aug. 7, 1998.
He attended Plains schools.
He drove transport for Groendyke Transport, Inc., for 23 years.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy.
He was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Plains.
Survivors include one son, Leroy Schield, Clovis, N.M.; one daughter, Leslie Hicks, Hitchcock, Okla.; three grandchildren, Tobby Schield, Liberal, James Laney, Enid, Okla., and Anthony Laney, Hitchcock, Okla.; one great-granddaughter, Jessica Schield, Liberal; one brother, Carl Schield, Greensburg; one sister, Dorothy Hardaway, Meade; and one foster sister, Phyllis Gearhart, Turpin, Okla.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Graveside services with burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the Plains Cemetery
with the Rev. Stanley Lehnert presiding.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or Kansas Lung Association in care of Miller Mortuary.
BETTY L. COOK
Betty L. Cook, 79, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, at Willow Tree Care Center in Delta, Colo.
She was born April 9, 1925, to Bessie and Maxwell Coon in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Survivors include her husband Irvin, Austin, Colo.; one son, David Kitt and wife Diane, Cave Creek, Ariz.; two daughters, Jo Ellin Martin and husband Dan, and Janie Barr and husband Don, all of Liberal; one step daughter, Linda Cannell and husband Gary, Grand Junction, Colo.; five grandchildren, Lisa Herrmann and husband Bob, and Karin Kitt, all of Phoenix, Jason Martin and wife Amber, Kyle Martin and Misty Barr, all of Liberal; three great-grandchildren, Trey Herrmann, Phoenix, and Chase Martin and Kadin Martin, both of Liberal; one brother, Ed and wife Jean, Fort Wayne, Ind.; one sister, Helen Henderson and husband Roy, Leo, Ind.; one sister-in-law, Zelma Cook, Meade; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Michael Kitt.
Cremation has taken place.
A memorial service will be in the spring or early summer in Delta, Colo.
