JEROME L. BAKER
Jerome L. Baker, 25, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, in El Dorado.
He was born April 10, 1979, to Herman and Minnie Johnson Baker in Liberal.
He attended high school in Memphis, Tenn., where he was an accomplished athlete excelling in football.
He enjoyed horseback riding, video games and fast cars.
Survivors include his parents; his grandmother, Reola Ward, Dumas, Ark.; two sons, Jaylin Baker, Liberal, and Tyler Gray-Baker, Angleton, Texas; one daughter, Tessa Kometscher, Lincoln, Neb.; one niece, Tierra Baker, Liberal; one brother, Herman Baker, Jr., Lincoln, Neb.; and two sisters, Shirley Underwood, Memphis, Tenn., and Pamela Baker, Liberal.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday at Miller Chapel with the Rev. James Baker presiding.
Burial will be in the Liberal Cemetery.
JACK C. MAXWELL, JR.
ULYSSES Jack C. Maxwell, Jr., O.D., 55, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at his residence in Ulysses.
He was born Feb. 16, 1949, to Jack C. and Barbara J. (Long) Maxwell.
He married Darel R. Armstrong July 3, 1989, in Lake Tahoe, Nev. She survives.
He attended high school in Lawrence, was very active in sports and later attended Colorado State University on a football scholarship. He then graduated in 1976 from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn.
He practiced for five years in Garden City and then moved to Ulysses in 1981.
He was a founding member of the High Plains Eye Society, former member of Ulysses Rotary Club, Grant County Chamber of Commerce and was a Boy Scout leader. He was a previous board member of KOA and a member of AOA, Sports Vision Center and the Kansas Optometric Association Political Action Committee.
He enjoyed golf, skiing and spending time with his children.
Other survivors include his mother; one son, Jack C. III; one daughter, Carson Rae, Ulysses; one brother, Scott Maxwell, Garden City; two sisters, Karen Kessler, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Kristin Seaton, Salina; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father and grandmother, Florence Kuske.
Private services will be presided by Galen Smith.

MIGUEL A. CID
BUCKLIN Miguel Angel Cid, 30, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, near Bucklin.
He was born July 19, 1974, to Carlos Emilio and Alicia Maldonado (Ilabaca) Cidjara in Puente Alto, Chile.
He had attended Bucklin High School and Liberal High School.
He was a journeyman electrician for Davis Electric in Cimarron.
Survivors include three sons, Quincey of Virginia, Zane, Liberal, and Xavier, Bucklin; one daughter, Jaelynn, Wichita; one nephew, Joseph, Olathe; one niece, Vanessa, Olathe; one sister, Claudia Carr and husband Jackie, Olathe; and foster parents, Guy and Glenna Root, Ryan Fisher, Kay and Bob Chapman and Linda Traigg.
Graveside services were at 11:30 a.m., Monday, Sept. 6, at Bucklin Cemetery
with Robby Spillman of the Christian Church in Bucklin presiding.
JIM HAMPTON
ULYSSES Jim Hampton, 77, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.
He was born May 9, 1927, to James Dallas and Nina Olive (Turner) Hampton in Ulysses.
He married Betty Jean Chapman Aug. 21, 1944, in Dallas. She preceded him in death.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for 20 years as a brick layer in Dallas before going into farming when he moved back to Ulysses in the 1960s.
He was a member of the Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post No. 79 and Pheasants Forever of Ulysses.
He also enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Manzano and husband Juan, Ulysses, and Kim Paris and husband Michael, Purdon, Texas; five grandchildren, Kade Manzano, Stormy Paris, Rachel Paris, Jaden Manzano and Sadie Manzano; and one sister, Martha Miller, Sublette.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Monday at the Church of Christ in Ulysses with Minister Warren Baldwin presiding.
Burial will follow at Ulysses Cemetery
with military rites by Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post No. 79.
Friends may call from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses.

DELIA R. PAUL
SUBLETTE Delia Riveiro Paul, 88, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at Satanta Long Term Care Unit.
She was born Oct. 6, 1915, to Alvio and Maria Fernandez Riveiro in Tampa, Fla.
She married Victor Edward Paul Jan. 26, 1946, in Havana Cuba. He preceded her in death.
She attended and graduated from Hillsborough County High School in Tampa, Fla.
She was in the position of Chief Operator and Chief Clerk of Command APO No. 632 of the United States Army during World War II.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Garden City.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Paul and his wife Georgia, Anguilla, BWI, and Victor James Paul, Winfield; one daughter, Mary Paul Knief, Sublette; seven grandchildren, Jason and Amber Paul of California, Donovan, Alicia, Jeremy, Kelly and Megan; and 10 great-grandchildren, Stevie, Brodie, Ezekiel, Britnie, Hunter, Andru, Bentley, Jasper, Bennett, C.J. and two upcoming births.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers.
Private graveside services were Sunday, Sept. 12, at Haskell County Cemetery
in Sublette.
A private Memorial Mass was at 2 p.m. today at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Satanta with Father Jim Dieker presiding.

MARVIN O. KOEHN
MONTEZUMA Marvin O. Koehn, 78, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at Western Plains Medical Complex in Dodge City.
He was born May 24, 1926, to Cornelius and Lena (Becker) Koehn in McPherson County.
He married Clara Jantz March 6, 1949. She died Aug. 9, 1958.
He then married Wilma Violet Harms March 8, 1959, in Montezuma. She died Aug. 22, 2000.
He attended school in rural Inman.
He was a contractor.
He was a member of the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Montezuma.
He enjoyed visiting.
Survivors include three sons, Dale R. Koehn and wife, Sharris, Montrose, Colo., Max Koehn and wife Marsha, Montezuma, and Randy Koehn and wife Rosalie, Starbuck, Minn.; five daughters, Marilyn Classen and husband Loren, DeRidder, La., Diann Koehn and husband Marlin, Montezuma, Nancy Koehn, Montezuma, Lorna Yost and husband Glen, Montezuma, and Debra Koehn, Montezuma; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five brothers, Arthur Koehn and wife Frieda, Halstead, Floyd Koehn and wife Gladys, Macon, Miss., Kenneth Koehn and wife Laura, Dodge City, Clayton Koehn and wife Carol, Oroville, Calif., and Melvin Koehn, Springfield, Mo.; four sisters, Delores Koehn and husband Ervin, Montezuma, Kathryn Unruh and husband Kermit, Galva, Betty Brown and husband Robert, Salina, and Margie Giesbrecht and husband Leroy, Merced, Calif.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was also preceded in death by his parents and two infant sons, Terry and Gary Koehn.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. today at the Church of God in Christ Mennonite in Montezuma with Ministers Charles Schmidt and Donald Koehn presiding.
Burial was in the North Mennonite Cemetery
in Montezuma.

KAY R. EVANS
PLAINS -- Kay R. Evans, 63, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, in Phoenix, Ariz.
Funeral arrangements are pending and will be announced by Fidler-Orme-Bachman Mortuary of Meade.
MONTE S. CALDWELL
Monte Caldwell, 44, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, at his home after a brave battle with cancer.
He was born Jan. 13, 1960, to J.W. and Shirley Caldwell in Liberal.
He graduated from Turpin, Okla., High School in 1978 and earned a bachelor's degree at Oklahoma State University.
He began his federal government career in Savanna, Ill., in 1985, when he completed the Quality Assurance Specialist (Ammunition Surveillance) intern program with subsequent duty stations at Anniston, Ala., and Dugway, Utah.
While employed at Dugway Proving Ground Utah, he completed his master's degree in safety engineering from the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
He transferred to the Tooele Chemical Disposal facility where he had worked since 1998 as a safety engineer and was ultimately promoted to deputy manager for compliance, laboratory and monitoring.
He was a member of St. Marguerite's Catholic Church in Tooele, Utah.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time in the company of friends pursuing those hobbies.
Survivors include his parents; two brothers, Joe Caldwell and wife Johnna, Turpin, Okla., and Dee Caldwell and wife Lisa, Piedmont, Ala.; five nieces and nephews, Mindy, Shawna, Misti, Angela and Casey; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial mass will be at 10 a.m., Friday at St. Marguerite's Catholic Church, 510 E. Vine St., Tooele, Utah.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate any continued support in cancer research in any manner the donor wishes.
