MARIE L. MILLER
Marie L. Miller, 80, of Liberal, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
She was born Oct. 10, 1922, to Ernest H. and Esther E. (Hendrixson) Steinbrock in Delphos.
She married Jacob H. Miller Oct. 24, 1946, in Miltonville. He died Dec. 14, 1997.
She graduated from Delphos High School in Delphos.
She worked as a grocery store clerk in Delphos for several years. She was a waitress for many years at Blue Goose, Sally Ann's, Shamrock, and La Fonda restaurants in Liberal.
Survivors include, one daughter, Sheryl Pittendrigh and husband, Al, Liberal; one brother, Darrel Steinbrock and wife, Teresa, Delphos.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Sharon Kay Miller; and one brother, Dale Steinbrock.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Miller Chapel in Liberal with the Rev. David Parker presiding.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Delphos Cemetery
in Delphos with the Rev. Sherman Beasterfeld presiding.
Friends may call from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, and from 8 a.m. until service time Wednesday at Miller Mortuary in Liberal .
Friends may call from 1-8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. until noon Friday at Phelps Funeral Home in Miltonvale.
ETHEL H. GORMAN
Ethel H. Gorman, 86, of Liberal, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at Liberal Good Samaritan Center in Liberal.
She was born Jan. 16, 1917, to Eugene Samuel and Jennie Althea (Gilbert) Alger in Lewistown, Mont.
She married Basil L. "Rusty" Gorman Oct. 20, 1937, in Dover, Mont. He died Aug. 15, 1963.
She graduated from Arrow Creek High School in 1934.
She operated an elderly care facility in her home from 1948 to 1960. She also served as society editor for the Lewistown Daily News from 1960 to 1967. She was a records system specialist for the U.S. Department of Defense at the Pentagon in Alexandria, Va. from 1968 until retirement in 1988.
She was a member of Hope United Methodist Church in Aurora, Colo., and also a member of local garden clubs and ladies groups. She also attended First Christian Church in Liberal.
She had been a Liberal resident since 1996.
Survivors include, three sons, Lyle T. Gorman and wife, Evelyn, Lewistown, Paul E. Gorman and wife, Mary, Aurora, and Dana L. Gorman and wife, Sharon, Independence; one daughter, Sharon M. Hobble, Liberal; one daughter-in-law, Margaret Gorman, Fraser, Mich.; one brother, Max W. Alger, Waynesboro, Va.; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, John Larry Gorman.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Kitch-Brenneman Funeral Home Chapel in Liberal with the Rev. John Andrews presiding.
Cremation has taken place, and inurnment will be at a later date at the City Cemetery
in Lewistown, Mont.

PHILIP J. POWELSON
HUGOTON Philip J. Powelson, 73, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses.
He was born Jan. 29, 1930, to Ronald and Maurine (Warner) Powelson in Buckun.
He married Jeannie Hanlin Nov. 22, 1952, in San Diego, Calif. She survives.
He graduated from Stafford High School in Stafford.
He worked as a railroad operator, then joined the U.S. Army where he served for four years. He worked as the Hugoton City Building Inspector for 30 years.
His hobbies included music and his family.
Other survivors include, his mother; one son, Marshall Powelson and wife, Flora, Huntington Beach, Calif.; one daughter, Andrea Adee and husband, Jim, Boise City, Okla.; one sister, Patricia English, Wichita; two nephews, Kyle and Kurt Smith, Wichita; four grandchildren, Jennifer Carson, Raytown, Miss., Justin Powelson, Phoenix, Ariz., Jeremiah Adee, Tishamingo, Okla., and Amanda Powelson, Huntington Beach; and five great-grandchildren, Dontay, Micajah, Ellas, Tyler, and Ashlyn.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hugoton Church of Christ in Hugoton with the Minister Lee Skelton presiding.
Burial will be at Hugoton Cemetery
in Hugoton with military graveside rites by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today, and from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Hugoton.

PATRICIA J. POPEJOY
Johnson Patricia Jane (Royer) Popejoy, 56, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at Hamilton County Hospital in Syracuse.
She was born Sept. 19, 1946, to Raymond Morris Royer and Laura Fern (Patton) Royer in Syracuse.
She married Jerald "Jerry" Raymond Popejoy on July 4, 1968, in Syracuse. He survives.
She graduated from Syracuse High School in 1964. She received her bachelor's degree in psychology from McPherson College in 1968.
She was a homemaker.
Her hobbies included collecting kaleidoscopes.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Syracuse, had been a sunday school teacher, girl scout leader, and elder caregiver.
She had been a Johnson resident for 32 years.
Other survivors include, one daughter, Bethanie Fern Popejoy, Syracuse; one brother, William Morris Royer and wife, Martha, Arcadia, Calif.; two cousins, Laura Wilkerson, Bakersfield, Calif., and Mary Louise Ghikas and husband Tasos, Chicago, Ill.; one sister-in-law, Doris Popejoy, Johnstown, Colo.; two nieces, Seena Kay Spencer and husband, Duane, and Laura Jane Morrison and husband, Ed, Broomfield, Colo.; two nephews, Richard Harrell, San Diego, and Robert Harrell, Santa Barbara, Calif.; three great-nieces; one great-nephew; numerous other relatives.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Syracuse with the Rev. Bill Fitzgerrel presiding.
Graveside committal service will follow at Syracuse Cemetery
in Syracuse.
Friends may call until 8 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Greene-Fellers Funeral Home in Syracuse.

VIOLA FREY
MURDOCK Viola Frey, 89, died Monday, March 17, 2003, at Wheatland Health Care Center in Kingman.
She was born Nov. 13, 1913, to Joseph A. and Rose Ella E. (Turpin) Rodgers in Beaver County, Okla.
She married Maurice Frey on Nov. 13, 1930, in Meade. He died Dec. 18, 1983.
She attended school in Beaver County.
She worked for Jack Randall, and later as the head chef at the Warren Hotel for many years before retirement.
Her hobbies included dancing and cooking.
She was a member of Central Christian Church in Liberal.
She was a former Liberal resident.
Survivors include, one son, Carlos Frey and wife, Sherian, Wayne, Neb.; one daughter, Marcelene Frey, Murdock; one nephew, Robert Eason, Dayton, Ohio; six grandchildren, Tommy Dudley, Kansas City, Dorinda Dudley, New York, Pamela Wilson, Denver, Colo., Ty Eason, Howard Beach, N.Y., Chad Frey, Glendale, Calif., Troy Frey, Denver; seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; two sisters; and one nephew, Archie Eason.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Miller Chapel with the Rev. David Parker presiding.
Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Thursday, and from 8 a.m. until service time Friday at Miller Mortuary. The family will welcome friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday.

ROBERT L. MCCART
Robert L. "Bob" McCart, 85, of Liberal, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal.
He was born Sept. 15, 1917, to James W. and Ora (Etherton) McCart in Edinburgh, Ill.
He married Betty J. Brenner Nellis March 4, 1957, in Liberal. She survives.
He worked as an operator/tool pusher for Bruce Well Service in Liberal until retirement in 1985.
Other survivors include, two sons, Jimmy McCart and wife, Brandy, Apache Junction, Ariz, Mark McCart and companion, Tracy Storms, Montesano, Wash.; four daughters, Aleta Spreer, Grantsville, Vicki Sandifer and husband, Dennis, Shreveport, La., Marsha Melchiori and husband, David, Coffeyville, Janet McCart and her companion, Edward Baker, Amarillo, Texas; 15 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; two sisters; one daughter, Laura McCart; and one son, David McCart.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fellowship Baptist Church in Liberal with the Rev. Bill Prater and the Pastor Andrew Linder presiding.
Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Liberal.
Friends may call at Miller Mortuary from 1-8 p.m. Thursday, and from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. Friday.
GOLDA M. NIX
Golda M. Nix, 94, of Liberal, died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2003, at Liberal Good Samaritan Center in Liberal.
She was born July 29, 1908, to Colonel and Elizabeth Logsdon in Tyrone, Okla.
She married Bert E. Nix Aug. 11, 1927, in Hooker, Okla. He died May 19, 1979.
She was a nurse's aid at Epworth Hospital and later at Southwest Medical Center. She was also care-taker for Dr. Holcomb's children for many years.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Rebekah Lodge, and True Friends Club, all of Liberal.
Survivors include, three sons, Donald Nix and wife, Diana, Republic, Mo., Gerald Nix, Tribune, and Carl Nix, Liberal; one daughter, Dolores Haight and husband, Darrell, Rolla; one brother, Mervin Logsdon, Pratt; two sisters, Naomi Baker, Kenewick, Wash., Dorothy Burdett, Pasco, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; one sister; and one son.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Miller Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Ken Hathaway presiding.
Burial will be at Liberal Cemetery.
