Hall
Benjamin J. "BJ" Hall, 67, Holton, died Aug. 20, 2000 at his home. He was born Sept. 14, 1932 in Kingsley, Iowa, the son of Benjamin H. and Mary Belle Wolfe Hall. Mr. Hall was a graduate of Holton High School in 1950 and had been part of the Holton community most of his life. He was employed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, having worked at Leavenworth and Lansing for many years. He worked at the federal prison in Fort Worth, Texas for 15 years before retiring in 1986. Mr. Hall served in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years and later served in the U.S. Army for two years. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Holton. He was also a member of American Legion Post 44 and VFW Post 1367, both in Holton. He married Doris I. Hollenbeck April 11, 1953 in Holton. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Benjamin D. Hall, Holton, and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Benjamin Travis Hall, on December 10, 1999. Graveside services for will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 23 in Holton Cemetery. He will lie in state Aug. 21-22 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton where the family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 22. Memorials may be given to Jackson County Friends of Hospice or the First Christian Church, in care of Mercer Funeral Home, Fourth and Montana, Holton, Kan. 66436.

Parrett
Mary Willie Parrett, 85, Circleville, died Aug. 20, 2000 at Onaga Community Hospital. She was born Oct. 7, 1914 in Netawaka, the daughter of Hershel and Armelia Justine "Meta" Nelson Keithline. Mrs. Parrett grew up in the Netawaka community and graduated from Netawaka High School in 1932. She lived in Topeka and Whiting before moving to Circleville in 1950. She was a homemaker. Mary was a member of the Circleville Christian Church and the Ladies Aid at the church. She was also a member of the Home Demonstration Unit at Circleville. She married Lawrence P. Parrett on Oct. 30, 1936 in Wetmore. He survives. An infant son, Maurice Heath Parrett, preceded her in death in 1938. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Gilbert and Gerald Keithline and a sister, Laverne Wood. Other survivors include three sons; Lawrence Keith Parrett, Silver Lake, Kenneth Allen Parrett, Hoyt, and Ronald Dean Parrett, Circleville; a brother, Kenneth Keithline, Netawaka; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Services for Mrs. Parrett will be at 1 p.m. Aug. 23 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery in Whiting. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 22 at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the Circleville Christian Church or the Alzheimer's Association, in care of Mercer Funeral Home, Fourth and Montana, Holton, Kan. 66436.

Huffman
Virginia F. Huffman, 76, Burlingame, died Aug. 17, 2000 at her home. She was born June 9, 1924 in Osage County, the daughter of John and Marie Goldsmith Neilson. She attended school at Vassar. She married Charles Huffman Aug. 8, 1942 at Emporia. She and her husband owned and operated Huffman Motors, a Chrysler dealership in Burlingame, from 1956 to 1978, and Huffman Bus Service in Burlingame, from 1956 until 1984, when they retired. He survives at the home. Other survivors include three daughters, Marie Seastrom, Burlingame, Betty Phillips, Holton, and Dorothy Geisler, Topeka; three brothers, Ludell Neilson, Centropolis, Arley Ray Neilson, Scranton, and Clyde Neilson; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services were held August 21 at Burlingame Federated Church. Burial was in Burlingame Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Stormont-Vail Hospice, 2252 SW 10th Ave, Suite B, Topeka, KS 66604, or the Burlingame Federated Church, Burlingame, Kan. 66413.

Zibell
H. Dale Zibell, 75, Holton, died Aug. 16, 2000 on a farm in Shawnee County. He was born April 7, 1925 in Holton, the son of Fred and Violet Shannon Zibell. Mr. Zibell was a graduate of Holton High School in 1944 and lived all of his life in the Holton community. He worked for the Michigan-Wisconsin Pipeline Booster Plant near Havensville for many years and was a lifelong farmer and stockman. He was a member of the Evangel United Methodist Church in Holton. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge 42 in Holton. Survivors include two brothers; Shannon Zibell, Holton and Harold E. "Zeke" Zibell, Topeka; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Services for Mr. Zibell were held Aug. 18 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial was in Holton Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the EUM Scholarship Fund or the Heart of Jackson Humane Society, in care of Mercer Funeral Home, Fourth and Montana, Holton, Kan. 66436.

Conger
Andrew L. (Andy) Conger, 12, Holton, died Aug. 15, 2000 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City. He was born March 4, 1988 at Holton, the son of Leon and Suzanne Barnett Conger. He was a seventh grade student at Holton Middle School in Holton. Andy died after a nine-month battle with acute myeloblastic lymphoma. He is survived by his parents, Leon and Suzanne Conger, Holton; two brothers, Mathew and Samuel Conger of the home; paternal grandmother, Twila Conger, Holton; maternal grandparents, Warren Barnett, Soldier, and Arita M. Rofkahr, Lawrence; and maternal great-grandparents, Oren and Anita Jones, Lawrence. He was preceded in death by a grandfather, Lloyd Conger. Services were held Aug. 19 at the Holton High School gym. Burial was in Holton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to the pediatric department at KU Medical Center, in memory of Andy Conger, 3901 Rainbow Blvd., Kansas City, Kan. 66160-7232.

Bottom
Flora Mae Bottom, 92, Onaga, died Aug. 14, 2000 at Golden Acres Nursing Home in Onaga. She was born Sept. 2, 1907 at Denison, the daughter of Ira and Sadie Stuckert Chestnut. She attended Denison schools and graduated from Denison High School in 1925 and was the class valedictorian. She attended Kansas State University for teaching certification credits, and taught in elementary schools in Jackson and Pottawatomie counties for 36 years. She retired in 1972, after teaching for 12 years in USD 322 in Onaga. She was a member of the Bucks Grove United Methodist Church near Soldier. She married John C. (Pete) Bottom May 31, 1934 at Soldier. He died Jan. 7, 1998. Survivors include a daughter, Judith Rickman, Escondido, Calif.; a brother, Glenn Chestnut, Topeka; two granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by brothers, Cecil, in 1913, Orville in 1935, Martin in 1988, and Jimmie in 1993. Funeral services were held Aug. 17 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Cremation will follow the funeral service. Inurnment will be at a later date in Bucks Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to Onaga Community Hospital or Bucks Grove United Methodist Church.

Coverdale
Grace Velma Coverdale, 93, Holton, formerly of Soldier, died Aug. 14, 2000 at Holton Community Hospital. She was born May 6, 1907 on a farm south of Onaga, the daughter of Albert Frederick and Mary Ann Teske Honig. She grew up on a farm five miles northeast of LaClede, which is south of Onaga. She attended Independence District 72 Grade School and graduated from Onaga High School in 1926. In her early years, Grace worked at a restaurant in Onaga. She spent most of her married life working as a farm wife in the Havensville and Soldier communities. Mrs. Coverdale attended the Lutheran Church in Duluth and was active in the Soldier United Methodist Church for many years. She was also a member of the Rosebud Club and the Jackson County Historical Society. She served as a board member on the Jackson County Council Area Agency on Aging and the Jackson County Mill Levy Board for six years. She married Clifford Carl Coverdale April 12, 1928 in Topeka. He died Jan. 29, 1962. She was also preceded in death by a son, William H. Coverdale, in 1998, and a daughter, Joyce Farley, in 1980; grandchildren, Rhonda June Farley and Christopher Farley; and a great-grandson, Daniel Cecil. Survivors include two sons, Roger S. Coverdale, Holton, and Add E. Coverdale, Circleville; a sister, Estelline Huey, Wamego; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and 10 step-great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Aug. 17 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. Burial was in Soldier Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Holton Community Hospital or Soldier Community Building, sent in care of the Farmers State Bank, Holton and Circleville.

Hiatt
Donald A. Hiatt, 71, Centralia, died Aug. 13, 2000 at Onaga Community Hospital. He was born Sept. 8, 1928, the son of Bob Hiatt and Margie Russell Hiatt in Ocheltree. He attended school at Stillwell and graduated from Stillwell High School in 1942. He was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1951. He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged from the Army on Dec. 16, 1952. Mr. Hiatt had worked for the Internal Revenue Service, and he had been an insurance agent and a salesman. What he loved most was the outdoors, and he had owned and operated a landscaping business in the Denver, Colo. area for 20 years. He loved working alongside his eight employees in the outdoors. Eight years ago the Hiatts moved to Centralia from Denver. Since making Centralia their home he had been a member of the Centralia Senior Booster Club, the United Methodist Church and served as a trustee of the church. He had also been a member of the Centralia Community Association and the Men's Centralia Pitch Club. While living in Centralia, he and his wife worked for the Hayes-Popkess Funeral Home from 1996 until the present. He married Shirley Ann Raney in Stillwell on April 23, 1954. She survives at their home in Centralia. Other survivors include four daughters, Teresa Jerrell, Abilene, Donna Dorman, Goff, Patricia Bueher, Grand Junction, Colo., and Angela Shamis, Denver, Colo.; a brother, Warren Hiatt, Grandview, Mo.; two sisters, Louise Cornwell, Grandview, Mo., and Josephine Seals, Laughlin, Nev.; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Aug. 18 at United Methodist Church in Centralia. The Revs. John and Jennifer Collins will conduct the services. The family will have a private committal service at a later date in the mountains of Colorado. Memorials are being left to the Centralia EMTs and may be sent in care of Hayes-Popkess Funeral Home in Centralia.

Smith
Elsie V. Smith, 91, formerly of Arrington, died Aug. 13, 2000 at Cray Senior Manor. She was born July 1, 1909 near Denison. She was the daughter of Frank and Florence Cook Worner. She attended grade school and some high school in Denison, and graduated from Valley Falls High School in 1927. Mrs. Smith taught school for a number of years in Atchison, Jackson and Jefferson counties. Some of her enjoyments included quilting. She married Clinton C. Smith Sr. May 6, 1935 in Ottawa. He preceded her in death Dec. 8, 1976. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Jerry Smith and Jack L. Smith; one brother; and three sisters. She is survived by a son, Clinton C. Smith Jr., Holton; three daughters Joyce Schrader, Belton, Texas, Janice Heitschmidt, Stanchfield, Minn., and Julia Smith, Portland, Maine; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Aug. 17 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Wayne Smith of Sugar Creek Christian Church officiating. Burial was in Sugar Creek Cemetery near Rushville, Mo. Memorial contributions may be made to either Sugar Creek Cemetery or Atchison Hospice.

Tannehill
E.G. "Tex" Tannehill, 80, died Aug. 13, 2000 at his home in Bartlesville, Okla. A native of Howard County, Texas, Ernest Grant "Tex" Tannehill was born Nov. 9, 1919 at Big Springs. He was the son of the late Robert Ernest and Martha Velma (Heaslet) Tannehill. He began his elementary education in Big Springs Elementary School. The Tannehill family moved to Fort Worth, Texas, when "Tex" was nine years of age and he completed his education in Fort Worth schools. He began his apprenticeship in concrete work and concrete finishing in Fort Worth. During World War II he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and served in the European Theatre from April of 1942 until he received his honorable discharge on Sept. 15, 1945. Following his discharge, he returned to Fort Worth and continued his profession of finishing concrete. He and the former Lee (Larmore) Vanatta were married Feb. 16, 1946 at Weatherford, Texas. They remained residents there until coming to Bartlesville in 1949. "Tex" was an accomplished cement finisher and contractor from 1954 until he retired in 1988. He attended the Eastern Heights Baptist Church, was a member and past president of the Exchange Club, a member of the James H. Teel American Legion Post 105, a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Bartlesville Masonic Lodge 284, AF&AM, the Scottish Rite Bodies of Oklahoma, Valley of Tulsa, the Akdar Shrine, Tulsa and the Wasono Shrine of Bartlesville, the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 142, and had served on the Board of Directors of the Bartlesville Playground Association. He is survived by his wife, Lee Tannehill, of the home; a son, Milton Ross "Mickey" Vanatta, Owasso, Okla.; a daughter, Mrs. Bobbie Jo Wedderien, Escondido, Calif.; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his father and mother he was preceded in death by a brother, Odell Tannehill, and by a sister, Ava Lee Mason. Funeral services were held Aug. 18 in Eastern Heights Baptist Church, Bartlesville, Okla. Bartlesville Masonic Lodge 284 AF&AM accorded masonic rites. Committal prayers and interment were directed in Memorial Park Cemetery by Arnold Moore Funeral Service. Memorials have been established in remembrance of "Tex" Tannehill with the Arthritis Foundation, Eastern Oklahoma Chapter, 4520 South Harvard, Suite 100, Tulsa, Okla. 74135, the American Lung Association of Green Country, 2805 East Skelly Drive, Suite 806, Tulsa, Okla. 74105 or to the Wasono Shrine Christmas party for special children, in care of Mr. Bob Goode, P.O. Box 945, Bartlesville, Okla. 74005.

Rogers
Erie A. Rogers, 103, Holton, died Aug. 12, 2000 at a Holton nursing home. He was born Aug. 1, 1897 in Greenleaf, the son of John James and Eliza Ann Briles Rogers. He was a farmer before he retired. He attended the United Methodist Church in Washington, Kan., and was a member of Frontier Lodge 104, AF&AM, in Washington. He was a member of Modern Woodmen of America for 85 years. He married Gladys M. Johnson on Feb. 12, 1922, in Greenleaf. She died Oct. 22, 1986. A daughter, Marie Odgers, died Aug. 6, 1983. Survivors include two sons, Glen W. Rogers, Holton, and Lyle G. Rogers, Auburn; a daughter, Opal Boyle, Holton; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Services were held Aug. 15 at Ward Funeral Home in Washington. Burial was in Washington City Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church in Washington, 66968.

Crow
Lawrence E. Crow, 82, San Diego, Calif., died June 15, 2000. He was born Nov. 8, 1917. He was raised in rural Jackson County near Whiting. He attended Lawn Ridge School. Mr. Crow retired after working as an equipment operator for the City of San Diego. Survivors include his wife, Audrey T. Crow; sons, Michael E. Crow, Seattle, and Gerald L. Crow, Honolulu; sisters, Geraldine, Carolee and Alice; and three grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to San Diego Hospice. Merkley-Mitchell Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Conaway
Jewel Rollen Conaway, 92, formerly of Holton, died Dec. 3, 2000 at Onaga Community Hospital. He had been a resident at Eastridge Nursing Facility in Centralia for a short time. He was born Sept. 26, 1908 in Blaine, the son of Benjamin and Emma Barksdale Conaway. Mr. Conaway had farmed in the Blaine community and later moved to Paramount, Calif., where he was a salesman for the Fuller Brush Company until he retired. He moved to Holton in 1986. He was a member of the Denison Bible Church. He married Nora Avis Wolfkill on June 20, 1934. They were divorced. He married Edna Thelma Miser Conaway on Feb. 8, 1986 at Auburn. She died Feb. 8, 1998. Survivors include a son, Larry C. Conaway, Miami, Fla.; a daughter, Jeweleen Crowley, Ogden, Utah; three stepsons, Roy E. Conaway and John T. Conaway, both of Topeka, and Jerry D. Conaway, Enterprise, Ala.; two stepdaughters, Mary Jane Martens, Quincy, Ill., and Joye P. Laderer, San Antonio, Texas; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, stepgrandchildren, step-great-grandchildrean and step-great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 9 at Tessendorf-Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Onaga. Burial will be in Huff Cemetery southwest of Blaine. Mr. Conaway will lie in state until service time at the fu­neral home in Onaga. A register book will also be available to sign at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Holton. Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
