Alice R. Slaybaugh
ROCHESTER -- Alice R. Slaybaugh, 62, of Rochester, died at 5:47 p.m. Tuesday, March 1 at
Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
She is survived by her husband, Donald; sons, Laron JK Slaybaugh of Rochester and
Christopher S. Slaybaugh of Rochester; sisters: Erma Sue (Lloyd) Stamper of Rochester, Martha
Irene Haddix of Flint, Mich., Phyllis Carol (Fred) Shayler of Flint, Mich., Judy Annette (Paul)
Mullins of Jackson, Ky.; a brother, Hershel 'Buddy' Lynn (Mary) Watts of Flint, Mich.; and
several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, March 4 at Good Family Funeral Home,
1200 W. 18th St. Rochester.
Funeral services will take place at noon Friday at the funeral home.
DellaMae Lucas
PLYMOUTH -- DellaMae Lucas, 88, of Plymouth, formerly of Knox, passed away Wednesday,
March 2.
DellaMae was born Nov. 17, 1922 in Pulaski County to Oscar and Della (Rhinebarger) DePoy,
both deceased. Feb. 15, 1941 she married
John E. Lucas. He preceded her in death July 16,
2003.
She and her husband John were caretakers of Round Lake cemetery for many years, she
retired after 14 years as the clerk for the superintendent of the Starke County Highway
Department.
She is survived by her children, Charlene Otterman of Richmond, Ind.; Carol Ann Mills of
Lakeville; and John C. 'Jack' Lucas (Norma) of Culver; and a brother, George DePoy (Ruth) of
Plymouth; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by nine brothers and sisters.
A memorial service will take place Sunday, May 1, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. CST(2:30 p.m. Eastern) at
M.C. Smith Funeral Home, 153 E. Washington St., Knox.
Darlene J. Nanna-Haas
BREMEN -- Darlene J. Nanna-Haas, 61, of Bremen, passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2011
in her home.
She was born Jan. 15, 1950 in Lakeville, to John and Fern (Anders) Minarik. July 10, 1987 in
Winter Haven, Fla., she married
David K. Nanna, who survives.
Darlene is also survived by two daughters, Lorraine 'Lori' (Michael) Freeman of Lakeville, and
Tracy (Richard) Schewene of Milan, Ind.; son, Ronald (Jane) Haas, Jr. of Wakarusa; five
grandchildren: Jacob Freeman, Jennifer Lichtenbarger, Jessica Freeman, Jamie Freeman and
Alexandria Haas; four sisters: Sue Gundlach of Plymouth, Linda Gerencser of South Bend,
Harriet Pinckert of Walkerton, and Joan Bemish of Bremen; brother, Ross Minarik of Lakeville,
and her canine companion and adopted son, Pepe.
Darlene was a lifelong area resident. She was a 1969 graduate from LaVille High School and
was self employed as a professional truck driver for 30 years.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 5 at Southlawn cemetery, 61300 U.S.
31 S. South Bend. Rev. Wyatt Smith will officiate.
There will be no visitation.
Palmer Funeral Home-Lakeville is handling the arrangements.

Robert L. Adams
COLUMBIA CITY -- Robert L. Adams, 93, of Sebring, Fla. died March 3, 2011. He had lived at
the Palms of Sebring and was receiving Good Shepherd Hospice Care.
He was born in Van Buren Township, Putnam County, Ohio to Virgil and Ruth Adams. The family
moved to Indiana in 1927 and Robert graduated from LaPaz High School, Lapaz, Ind. in 1935.
He married
Mary E. Martin Dec. 11, 1937. They celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary just
before she died March 9, 2010. Children surviving are: Don (Barbara) Adams of Fort Wayne and
Sebring, Fla., Pat (Richard) Farmer of Sebring, Fla., Ruth (Rick) Peairs of Atascadero, Calif. and
Bob (Nancy) Adams of Union, Ky. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren
and one great-great-granddaughter.
Three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter are deceased.
Brothers surviving are Clifford and Jim Adams of Plymouth, Ind.
One brother Stuart, and an infant sister Gertrude Louise, preceded him in death.
Robert worked at Kingsbury Ordinance Plant, Ball Band and Studebakers as well as farmed an
80-acre farm near Tyner, Ind. In 1950 he sold that farm and bought a 160-acre farm in Columbia
City, Ind.
He farmed full time until 1972 when he went to work for the Whitley County Highway Department.
The last four years he was the superintendent and he retired at 62. They purchased a home in
Sebring in 1979 and sold the farm. For several years they wintered in Florida and summered in
Columbia City. He was a member of the ASC board, helped assess property for Thorncreek
Township, was on the school board, and a member of the Eagles in Columbia City.
He was a volunteer and member of the Sebring Recreational Club and helped to maintain the
shuffleboard courts. He loved to play shuffleboard and achieved State Pro status by winning
points at many tournaments.
He also had a workshop where he made many woodworking projects for his family.
The funeral service will be Wednesday, March 9 at 1 p.m. at Smith & Sons Funeral Home,
Columbia City.
Burial will be in South Park Annex cemetery.
Visitation will be Tuesday, March 8 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Martha D. Wilcox
PLYMOUTH -- Martha D. Wilcox, 96, of W. Jackson Street, Plymouth, Ind., passed away
Friday, March 4, 2011, at 11:32 a.m., at her home.
She was born Aug. 7, 1914, in Bremen, Ind., to Grover and Ida (Coyle) Rensberger. Martha and
Sylvester L. Wilcox were married
June 30, 1951. Sylvester passed away Dec. 27, 1991. Martha
was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Martha is survived by her sons, Donald Wilcox of Plymouth and Samuel Carroll of Plymouth; her
daughters, Pat Richmond of Goshen, Ind. And Clare Popenfoose of Leesburg, Ind.; her sisters,
Clara Baker of Plymouth, Bessie Snyder of Florida, and Mary (Richard) Hochstetler of Illinois; 30
grandchildren; and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her son, Floyd Carroll; her daughters, Maxine Blanchard and
June Grueter; her sisters: Vera Shafer, Dorothy Ayers, and Nancy Huffman; and her brothers:
Henry, Amos, Carl, and Roy Rensberger.

Herbert L. 'Red', Sr. Gaddis
MICHIGAN CITY -- Mr. Herbert L. 'Red' Gaddis Sr., age 80, of Michigan City, Ind. and formerly
of Walkerton, Ind, died Saturday, March 5, 2011 peacefully in his sleep at St. Anthony Memorial
Health Center.
The funeral service will be Tuesday, March 9, at 11 a.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home, Michigan City.
Visitation will be Monday from 3 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service.
Burial will be in Woodlawn cemetery in Walkerton.
Herbert was born July 3, 1930 in Beedeville, Ark. To Hutty and Lillian (Breckenridge) Gaddis.
They are deceased.
He is survived by his loving companion, Susan Webster; son, Lennie Gaddis of LaPorte;
daughter, Kathy Borelli of Koontz Lake, Ind.; grandson, Chad Williams; sisters, Shirley Sue
(Duane) Drake of Plymouth, Ind., Patricia (Chuck) Wrigley of Peoria, Ill.; and a brother, Jerry
Gaddis, of Bremen, Ind. Also surviving are nieces and nephews: Angee Butler, Dennis
Burlingham, Jared Gaddis, Jordan Gaddis, Kenny Drake and Jeff Drake.
Mr. Gaddis was a machinist at Joy Manufacturing Co. for 31 years and retired in 1989. He had a
great sense of humor. He loved hot rods, car shows and drag racing. He will be sadly missed by
his family and friends.
Memorials are suggested to the Michiana Humane Society or the LaPorte County Council on
Aging.
Patricia 'Pat' I. Harris
ROCHESTER -- Patricia 'Pat' I. Harris, 64, of Rochester, died at 7:20 p.m. March 6, 2011 at
her residence, following a three-month illness.
She is survived by her husband Bob; sons, Andre Husain and Kasib Husain and wives Tamika
and Lisa, all of Cleveland, Ohio; daughters, Tanya Cox and Lisa Harris; nine grandchildren;
sisters: Bertha (John) McClellan, Corzetta (Harold) Duncan, Lendora Mathenay, and Fannie
Ashford; brothers: Melvin Methenay, Harrold Methenay, and Stanley Methenay; a brother-in-law,
Clarence Harris; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 10 at the Earl-Grossman Funeral
Home, 208 N. Michigan St., Argos.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12 at Cleveland Memorial Gardens,
Cleveland, Ohio. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Gardens.

June Shepard
CULVER -- June Shepard, 85, of Culver, passed away March 6, 2011 at Miller’s Merry Manor in
Culver.
June was born in Medaryville, Ind. June 7, 1925 to parents Harry Byers and Mabel (Anderson)
Byers, who preceded her in death.
June retired from Culver Academies, where she worked in the Food Service Department. She
was a member of the Culver VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Wesley United Methodist Church.
She is survived by children: Linda Wheatman, Roy Shepard and David Shepard (wife Carol), all
of Chesterton, Ind.; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Shepard; son, Ronald Wayne Shepard;
daughter, Tina Marie Shepard; sister, Luella Mae Alkire; and brother, Damon Eugene Byers.
Visitation will be held Friday March 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. EST at the Odom Funeral Home in
Culver.
Funeral services for June Shepard will be at the Wesley United Methodist Church Saturday,
March 12, at 10 a.m. EST. Pastor Larry Saunders will officiate.
Burial will follow at Independence cemetery, Medaryville, Ind.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Marshall County Humane Society.

Mildred E. Books
Jan. 5, 1915 – March 7, 2011
PLYMOUTH -- Mildred E. Thompson Books, 96, passed away Monday, March 7, 2011 at 9:18
a.m. in the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Plymouth, due to natural causes. Mildred was a
former Lawrence Lake resident now living at the River Park community.
Born Jan. 5, 1915 in Walton, Ind., she was the daughter of Howard Allen and Mary Edith
(Lambert) Snider. The family moved to Plymouth in 1925 and although she attended school
here, she spent her senior year in Walton and graduated from Young America School in 1933.
She was the last surviving member of her 21 classmates.
April 5, 1934 in Warsaw, Ind. She became the bride of Robert Adam Thompson preceded her in
death Sept. 16, 1974.
From 1968 until 1986 Mildred was heavily involved in making jewelry from crystal glass or
polished stones. For many years the couple had a booth at the Thieves Market in South Bend.
Mildred showed at the Blueberry Festival for quite some time. Their children referred to them as
'rock hounds' as everywhere they went they were in search of that special stone to be placed in
rock polisher that tumbled 24 hours a day. Mildred’s CB handle was 'Glass Grinder' as she was
known for her art of repairing damages pieces of glass.
Another interest of Mildred’s was recorded history. She was a member of DAR having served as
the registrar for many years. For more than five years she recorded and compiled; Marshall
County Indiana Weddings 1889 to 1904 and Marshall County Indiana Land Records 1835 to
1860; these are used today as reference guides in the library of the Marshall County Historical
Museum.
A homemaker, Mildred was a longtime member of Twin Lakes Home Economics Club and
attended Faith Baptist Church.
Dec. 10, 2003, after 71 years of 'going their own way, ' Mildred married
her junior-senior prom
date; Fremont P. Books. Together they have enjoyed a golden opportunity.
Mildred is survived by a daughter, Ellen J. (Ronald) Baney of Lakeville; a son, Jerry R. (Nina)
Thompson of Tucson, Ariz.; two stepdaughters, Candy L. (Charles) Poor of Plymouth and Cindy
A. Books (Jonathon Gurland) of Englewood, Fla.; and stepson, Glen E. (Jane) Books of Basking
Ridge, N.J. Together they have 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by three sisters: Betty Jean Mitch, Joanna Dillman, and Donna Mae Martin;
and a brother, Manford Snider; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death was a daughter, Dianna Dee Wiles; a great-granddaughter, Brooke Lynn
Thompson; a sister, Viola Gross; and three brothers: Paul, Donald and Verlie Snider.
Family and friends will gather at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St.,
Plymouth from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 10.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home; the Rev. Charles
Krieg will preside.
Burial will follow in the New Oakhill cemetery, Plymouth.
