Bertha Pearl Mersch
FREMONT -- Bertha Pearl Mersch, 87, of Jimmerson Lake, Fremont, died at 6:03 p.m. Feb. 10,
2011 at Cameron Memorial Community Hospital, Angola.
She was born Nov. 3, 1923 in Clearwater, Neb., to Herman Axel Anderson and Flossie Pearl
Bebee Anderson. She was married
to Joseph Carl Mersch Nov. 29, 1941, in Clearwater, Neb.
He passed away Dec. 21, 1992.
She was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Angola, and a former member of
St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Winamac. She was a homemaker and a farm wife helping her
husband on the farm.
Bertha had lived with her daughter and son-in-law in Fremont, for the past eight years and was a
former resident of Winamac and Royal Center. She enjoyed working with puzzles, watching the
birds and squirrels, gardening, and riding on the pontoon boat.
She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Bertha had a smile that lit up her
face and made you want to smile.
Survivors include her daughters: Jeanette D. (William) Cady of Fremont, Janice Herrin of
Lafayette, Jolene (A.J.) Loughran of Sterling, Colo., Judy (Butch) Shidler of Royal Center, and
Joetta Sines of Royal Center; sons, John (Pat) Mersch of Peru, and Joe P. (Kerry) Mersch of
Plymouth; and Jack Mersch, Bloomfield, N.M.; 21 grandchildren; and 52 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters: Selma Pins, Emma Hawk, Viola
Anderson, and Elsie Anderson; and brothers: Virgil Anderson, Robert Anderson, and Orville
Anderson.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Winamac, Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 11
a.m. (EST) with Father Bill Kummer officiating.
Burial will take place in the St. Peter’s cemetery, Winamac.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 at Frain Mortuary, 305 E. Main St.,
Winamac.
The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.
Tyler James Mattix
BOURBON -- Tyler James Mattix, 18, of 506 St. Bourbon St., died in Memorial Hospital, South
Bend, at 9:25 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2011. His death is under investigation by the St. Joseph
County Coroner.
Tyler was born in South Bend, the son of Duane Mattix and Misty Stewart March 27, 1992. He
attended Plymouth schools.
An athletic and active young man, Tyler enjoyed football, skate boarding, wake boarding, skiing,
boating and motorcycling.
He was an avid Colts fan, and he enjoyed being with his family.
Tyler is survived by his mother Misty Stewart and her fiancé, Adam Cook, Bourbon, and his
father Duane and step-mother, Susan Mattix, Plymouth.
Also surviving is a sister Danyiel 'Shireman' and Evan Byers, Plymouth, and two brothers,
Brandon and Derek Mattix, also of Plymouth.
Tyler’s maternal grandfather James and step grandmother, Sharon Stewart of Plymouth and his
maternal grandmother, Janice Lamb, survive as well as does his paternal grandparents, Kent
and Donna Mattix of Plymouth. His step paternal grandmother, Marie Pearl also survives.
A niece, Addison Byers, also survives him.
Tyler was preceded in death by his step paternal grandfather, James Pearl
Friends may call at the Johnson-Danielson Funeral Home, 1100 N. Michigan St., Plymouth,
Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, from 4 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services for Tyler will be held in the funeral home on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 11 a.m.
The Rev. Douglas Jividan, pastor of the Plymouth Baptist Church, will officiate.

Roger P. Hackett
PLYMOUTH -- P. Roger Hackett, age 66, of Berkley Street, Plymouth, passed away at 7:47
p.m., Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at Saint Vincent’s Carmel Hospital in Carmel.
Roger was born Aug. 13, 1944, in Plymouth, to Donald P. and Myrtle A. (Scott) Hackett.
Roger was a member of the Walnut Church of the Brethren, Argos, and was the director of
music at the church. Roger proudly served his country in the United States Army.
Roger and the former Pamela Mortimore were married
in 1979. They have one daughter, Kelly Miller.
Roger is survived by his wife, Pamela Hackett of Plymouth; his daughter, Kelly Miller of Goshen;
his brother, Ron S. (Elaine) Hackett of Fort Wayne; his sister, Phyllis J. Conley of Whittier, Calif.;
his nieces, Diana Trump of South Bend, Teresa Jones of California, Dawn Maliff of California,
and Lisa Hill of Austin, Texas.

Donald Ray Jones
KNOX -- Donald Ray Jones, 67, Knox, died Saturday, Feb. 12 at his residence.
He is survived by by his wife Nancy; sons, Michael Ray Jones of Walkerton and Billy Odell Jones
of Plymouth; daughter, Vicki Sue Jones of North Judson; brothers: Leroy Jones, Bobby Jones,
Roger Jones and Glendale Jones; sisters: Mildred Gephart, Shirley Jones, Pearl Fizzcell and
Linda Pennock; and nine grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17 at M.C. Smith Funeral Home, Knox.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 18 at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at Crown Hill cemetery.
Lee C. Lakins
BREMEN -- Lee C. Lakins, 83, of Bremen, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011 at the Community
Hospital of Bremen.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons: Rick Lakins of Columbia City, Jack (Pam) Lakins of
Plymouth and Mike (Trena) Lakins of Bremen; daughter, Barbara (Chuck) Goble: stepson,
Kenneth (Pat) Young of Mishawaka: stepdaughters: Elaine Young and Janet (Terry) Miller of
Bremen, and Cheryl (Don) Brier of Lafayette; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 18
stepgrandchildren; 15 stepgreat-grandchildren; one stepgreat-great-grandchild; brother, John
Lakins of Rutledge, Tenn.; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church,
605 S. Center St., Bremen.
Funeral services will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17 at the church.
Burial will follow at the Bremen cemetery with full military rites.

Michael L. Schwartz
PLYMOUTH -- Michael L. Schwartz, 57, of Carriage Drive, Plymouth, passed away Saturday,
Feb. 12, 2011, at his home, with his loving family by his side.
Mike was born Dec. 1, 1953, in Bluffton, Ind. To Lorin and Dorothy (Foust) Schwartz. He was
their only child. Mike married
Donna Heinrich Dec. 17, 1977, in Noblesville, Ind. Mike and Donna
met while they were both teaching at Culver Community High School.
Mike began teaching in 1976 as a business teacher in the high school. He had been the sponsor
of BPA (Business and Professional Association) for 20 years, and was on the Indiana state
executive board. He was one of the charter members of the Maxinkuckee Players in Culver. He
was involved with sports as the girls volleyball coach and announced the football and basketball
games. He was meticulous with numbers and saved all of the stats, which he charted for the
basketball games, through the years. He volunteered on work camp trips, which were sponsored
through his church.
Mike visited almost every baseball stadium in the United States. He scrapbooked and
participated in family activities in his spare time. He was an active member of the Trinity United
Methodist Church, in Plymouth.
Mike is survived by his wife, Donna Schwartz; their daughters, Leslie Anne Schwartz of
Wilmington, N.C. and Amy Elizabeth (Chris) Jordan of Fishers, Ind.; his grandchildren, Seana
Jordan and Charlie Jordan of Fishers; and his parents, Lorin and Dorothy Schwartz of Bluffton.

Leslie Roger "Frog" Walters
ROCHESTER -- Leslie Roger 'Frog' Walters of Arthur Street, Rochester, died at Woodlawn
Hospital, Saturday Feb. 12.
Frog is survived by his wife Marty; three sons, Jim and Amy Marrs and their children, Adele and
Ayden; Michael and his children Matt and Alexa; and John and Mindy and their children, Taylor
and Teagen.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and an hour prior to his service, at Good Family Funeral
Home, 1200 W. 18th St., Rochester. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral
home. Dr. Mark Spencer will officiate his services. Burial will follow in Rochester’s IOOF
cemetery.
Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the First Baptist Church, Rochester, or the

Evelyn Irene Kowal
ROCHESTER -- Evelyn Irene Kowal, 95, of Rochester, died at 7:06 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 2011
at Hickory Creek of Rochester.
She is survived by a son, Richard Kowal of Palisade, Minn.; five grandchildren; and several greatgrandchildren,
nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 18 at Good Family Funeral Home, 1200
W. 18th St., Rochester.
Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions

Carroll R. "Rick" Conley
PLYMOUTH -- Carroll R. 'Rick' Conley, age 55, of Redwood Road, Plymouth, passed away at
3:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at his home.
Rick was born Sept. 7, 1955, in Plymouth, to Austin and Carol (Long) Conley. He was a lifetime
resident of Plymouth. Rick and the former Kathy Landrie were united in marriage June 21, 1997,
in Plymouth, at the House of Prayer, where he was a member. A proud United States Marine,
Rick served his country in Vietnam.
He was an enthusiast of NASCAR, and small truck racing was his hobby. He was also a big fan
of the Indianapolis Colts. He had been employed as an auto mechanic. Rick’s greatest joy was
spending special time with his family and his friends.
Rick is survived by his wife, Kathy Conley; his father, Austin Conley of Plymouth; his sons: Curtis
Long of Plymouth, Christopher Conley of Plymouth, Shawn Conley of Plymouth, and Beau
Landrie of Plymouth; his daughters: Lynn Fishburn of Rochester, Heather Conley of Plymouth,
Dawn Gamble of Plymouth, and Lynn Landrie of Plymouth; his brothers, Jeff (Pam) Stettler of
Plymouth, Sam (Naomi) Long of South Bend, Allen Conley of Plymouth, and Lonnie Dean
Conley of Elkhart; his sisters: Sue (Bill) Sullivan of Plymouth, Lisa (Chris) Beer of Milford, Lorie
Jean Adell of Elkhart, and Ann Marie Conley of Elkhart; and 12 grandchildren.
Rick was preceded in death by; Flora Conley, Steven Conley, Carol Conley, Olive Schafer, Art
Long, and Raymond Stettler.
