Mary Ellen Tewksbury, 80, of Reno, Nev., a native of Montpelier, Ind., died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Park Place Retirement Community.
The Montpelier, Ind., native had worked for Continental Can Co. in human resources as personnel supervisor. She was a 1944 graduate of Indiana University. Surviving are a brother, Robert M. of Quincy, Calif.; nieces Amy M. DiazDeLon and Kathleen John, both of Quincy, Calif.; nephews David H. Tewksbury of Champaign, Ill., and Robert M. Tewksbury Jr. of Medford, Ore., and eight great-nieces and -nephews. A brother, Joseph H. Tewksbury, preceded her in death. Graveside services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Historic Woodlawn cemetery, Montpelier, Ind.

Norman E. Geiger, 86, of Decatur, former owner of Riverside Garage, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at Woodcrest Nursing Center.
The St. Marys, Ohio, native was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder and finance committee member. He was a former member of Adams County Coin Club and a Boy Scout leader for several years. Surviving are a son, Wayne L. of Hoagland; and a granddaughter, Lisa J. Geiger of Hampton, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola, and a brother, Frederick W. Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Haggard & Sefton Funeral Home, Decatur, with calling from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Audrey M. Shorter, 86, of Syracuse, a former secretary, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at Miller's Merry Manor.
The Green County native had worked for William F. Freund C. and for Midwest Spec. Industry and was formerly of Muncie and Irish Lake. She was a member of Bloomfield Order of Eastern Star and Middletown American Legion Auxiliary. Surviving are a sister, Mable E. Bradley of Indianapolis; and several nieces and nephews. There are no services or calling. Burial will be at Elm Ridge cemetery, Muncie.

Verna L. Montel, 101, of Warsaw, a practical nurse, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at Mason Health Care Facility.
The Odell, Ill., native was a homemaker and had worked as a telephone operator. She was formerly of Atwood, a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church and American Legion Auxiliary for 77 years, both of Atwood, and a 50-year member of Order of Eastern Star Chapter 88. Surviving are nephews Robert Orcutt of Warsaw, Albert Orcutt of Atwood and John W. Harman of Plymouth; and nieces Helen Jervis of Casper, Wyo., Genevieve Druckamiller of Palmetto, Fla., and Betty Wilson of Hulette, Wyo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Franklin L., and a sister, Ethel M. Laughlin. Services are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Titus Funeral Home, Warsaw, with calling from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday. Martha R. Hindenlang, 96, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at her home in Decatur.
The Berne native was a homemaker, attended the Monroe United Brethren in Christ Church, and assisted her husband with farming operations. She was a graduate of International Business College. Surviving are sons Ernest of Wickenburg, Ariz., and Gene M. of Decatur; a sister, Florence Fruechtenicht, of Fort Wayne; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, John L.; brothers Clifton and Howard Hussbaum; and a sister, Edna Sprugeon. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur, with calling one hour before services. Calling is also from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Marian Freeland McFarren
Tacoma, Wash. - 1915-2003
Marian Freeland McFarren, 88, formerly of Bluffton, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at Allenmore Hospital in Tacoma, Wash.
The Rockville native was an artist and poet. Several of her poems were featured in the Indianapolis Star and other publications. Her paintings and photographs of the Wabash River and other Indiana sceneries can be seen in many Wells County homes. She was also a switchboard operator at Caylor-Nickel Clinic. Surviving are daughters Karen West of Bluffton and Janet Orazco of Tacoma, Wash.; a brother, Arthur Freeland of Colorado; a sister, Avanella Buttons of Bradenton, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, James F.; and brothers Albert and Hugh Freeland. Services will be held at a later date. A private graveside service will be at Elm Grove cemetery, Bluffton.

Ethel L. Fritz, 85, of Kendallville, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at the Shepherd of the Hill in Kendallville.
The Noble County native was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Kendallville. She belonged to the Second Time Around Club, the Noble Chain Links Camping Club, and the Ladies Aid at Center Chapel Church. She was retired as a sales clerk from the G.C. Murphy store. Surviving are sons Wendell of Kendallville, Carroll of Goshen, John of Redmond, Wash., and James of Elkhart; a daughter, Lois Dennis of Fort Wayne; brothers Harold Bailey of Kendallville and Donald Bailey of Lakeland, Fla.; 19 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, August C. Services are 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hite Funeral Home in Kendallville. Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The U.S. Army veteran worked as a real estate investor, broker, and auctioneer. He was a lifelong Warsaw resident, and was a member of Leesburg United Methodist Church in Leesburg. Surviving are his wife, Patricia; a stepson, David M. Rogers of Leesburg; stepdaughters Debra Nielson of Winona Lake, and Denise L. Rogers of Arcadia; a sister, Becki Davis of Leesburg; and three stepgrandchildren. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel in Warsaw. Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. James J. Shuttleworth, 65, of Huntington, died Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003, in Wabash County.
The Muncie native was the president and CEO of Shuttleworth Inc., and enjoyed collecting, restoring, and flying vintage World War II airplanes. He was named the 1991 Outstanding Mechanical Engineer by the Purdue University School of Mechanical Engineering, and was named the 1997 state of Indiana Entrepreneur of the Year. The 434th Fighter Squadron of the 479th Fighter Group named him as an honorary member. Surviving are his wife, Carol; sons Tod G. of Hendersonville, Tenn., Troy J. of Cyprus, Texas, and Charles J. of Huntington; a daughter, Trea Will of Galena, Ohio; brothers Donald and William of Warren, Jerry of Bluffton, and Timothy of Girard, Pa.; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Emmanuel Community Church, 12222 U.S. 24 West, Fort Wayne, with calling one hour before services. Harold "Red" Hinman, 70, of Roanoke, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, at Parkview Hospital.
The Whitley County native was a Korean War veteran and was a member of the Roanoke Park Board and Past Roanoke Jaycees, and served on the Roanoke Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Seminary United Methodist Church in Roanoke. He retired from Overnite Trucking after 15 years, and worked for Lime City Trucking Co., Schenkel Oil, Homier Distributing and Columbia Freight Lines. Surviving are his wife, Margaret of Roanoke; sons Robin of Huntington and Gale of Roanoke; a brother, Norman of Huntington; a half sister, Laura Bell Walker of Columbia City; and six grandchildren. Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at Roanoke Memorial Funeral Chapel. Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today. Burial will be at Glenwood cemetery.
