Lawrence Warren Hershman, 90, of Columbia City, a World War II U.S. Army veteran and prisoner of war, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at home.
The Malta, Mont., native retired in 1975 from DECAS with the Defense Department after 25 years of service. He was a member and honorary elder of Laud Christian Church, American Former POW Old Fort Chapter, VFW Post 5582 and National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He began the Whitley County 4-H Goat Club and enjoyed reading and working with livestock. Surviving are his wife, Edith; sons Robert Forbes of Chickapee, Mass., Lawrence W. and Lewis W. F. of Columbia City; brothers Leonard of Richland, Wash., and Lester of Crown Point; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughters Lynette E. Hershman and Judith A. Forbes and two sisters. Services are 2 p.m. Monday at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City, with calling two hours before services. Graveside military rites by U.S. Army will be at Nolt cemetery, Columbia City. Memorials are to the church.

Huntington - 1917-2003
Fred Elmer Sonner Jr., 85, of Huntington, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at Norwood Nursing Center.
The Huntington native retired in 1975 from International Harvester in Fort Wayne after 38 years of service. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Margaret J.; sons Kenneth L. of Zionsville and Dennis A. of Roanoke; sisters Zelda R. Vardaman of Markle and Willadean Ketterman of New Haven; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister. There will be no calling. Private family services are Sunday. Burial will be at Mt. Hope cemetery in Huntington. Memorials are to Parkview Home Health Care & Hospice.

Harlan - 1913-2003
Ruth B. Brendel, 89, of Harlan and formerly of Lake Township and Auburn, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at DeKalb Hospital in Auburn.
The Harlan native assisted with the family farm, specializing in strawberries, was a school bus driver for Arcola School for several years and had served as Lake Township assessor. She enjoyed camping, fishing and crafts. Surviving are sisters Edythe Eager of Harlan, Ellen Dean of Rockford, Ill. and Doris Garber of Fresno, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur T., two brothers and two sisters. Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Sheets & Childs Funeral Home, Churubusco, with calling from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be at Eel River cemetery in Allen County. Memorials are to Woodburn Christian Children's Home.

Bimol K. Datta, 68, of Fort Wayne, a civil and chemical engineer, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2002, at Parkview Hospital.
"He was a beloved and devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed history, politics, gardening and cooking." The Assam, India, native worked with Assam Oil Co. Surviving are his wife, Marcia; children Mya Cougill, Deepali Tracey, Monique Datta and Pradeep K. Datta; two brothers; two sisters; and nine grandchildren. Doris M. Thiebolt, 98, of Fort Wayne, a teacher with St. John Lutheran School from 1949 to 1966, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at Lutheran Home.
"Doris enjoyed knitting." The Huntertown native was involved with Order of Eastern Star Trinity Chapter and a member of St. John Lutheran Church. Surviving are a son, David of Osceola; and a granddaughter, Lori Crabtree of Elkhart. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford, two brothers and a sister. Graveside services are 11 a.m. Monday at Lindenwood cemetery, 2324 W. Main St. Memorials are to the church or St. John Lutheran School.

Olga B. Mettler, 96, of Fort Wayne, a member of Zion Lutheran Church, died Thursday, Sept. 19, 2002, at Riverbend Health Care Center.
"She enjoyed quilting, cooking and puzzles." The Fort Wayne native was a homemaker. Surviving are daughters Irma Bradtmiller and Mildred O. Bartels, both of Fort Wayne, and Maxine L. Stephens of Churubusco; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter J., and five brothers and sisters. Surviving are his wife, Maureen; sons James III of Tinley Park, Ill., Patrick of Moreno Valley, Calif., and Timothy of Romeo, Mich.; a daughter, Jamie Liechty of Fort Wayne; brothers Vincent of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Michael of Belleair, Fla.; and a sister, Margaret Stevenson of Franklin, Mich.
