Joe Petty
BUFFALO -- Joe Petty, 72, of 7169 E. Washburn Drive, died at 5:45 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at his residence.
He was born Dec. 10, 1929, in Harden County, Tenn. He married Marjorie A. Sparger on Sept. 24, 1955, in Crown Point, and she survives.
Mr. Petty and his wife lived in the Buffalo community for the last 14 years. He retired Aug. 1, 1988, from Acme Steel in Riverdale, Ill., after 32 years of employment. He was an overhead crane operator and an Army veteran.
He was a member of Monticello's American Legion Post for 22 years. He enjoyed gardening, woodcraft and fishing.
Surviving with his wife are a son, Raymond V. Petty (wife: Patricia) of Marion; two sisters, Grace White and Mag Higgins, both of Savannah, Tenn.; and two brothers, Buck Petty and Jake Petty, both of Savannah.
Services are Monday in Monticello.
M. Jean Zarse
M. Jean Zarse, 80, of 1912 Sweetbriar Court, died at 11:49 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at Home Hospital in Lafayette.
She was born April 6, 1921, in White County and lived in Lafayette since 1987, coming from Brookston. She graduated from Monticello High School.
On Sept. 28, 1940, she married Albert F. Zarse in White County, and he died July 26, 1984.
Mrs. Zarse worked as a secretary for Purdue University for ten years, retiring in March of 1987. She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and collecting dolls.
Surviving are daughters, Linda K. Decker (husband: Stephen) and Catherine E. Rush, both of Lafayette, and a sister, Pat McQuern of Frankfort.
Fred H. Evans Jr., 73
ATTICA -- Fred H. Evans Jr., 73, of 407 N. Sixth St., died at 1:35 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Country Care Nursing Center in Williamsport following his recovery from lung surgery.
He was born in Momence, Ill., on April 20, 1928. He graduated from Attica High School in 1946 as salutatorian and from Butler University in the School of Pharmacy in 1950.
He married Nancy A. Parton on June 24, 1950, in Attica, and she survives.
Mr. Evans formerly worked for Walgreens Pharmacy in South Bend and later owned the McKinley Pharmacy in South Bend from 1953 to 1960. While living in South Bend, he was cited by the South Bend United Way for his help in polio inoculations of 15,465 people in the South Bend area. He was a member of the Indiana Pharmaceutical Association and former president of the St. Joseph County Pharmaceutical Association. He was a member of the Toastmasters Club in South Bend.
In 1960, he moved to Attica, where he and his brother, Stanford Evans, continued the operation of Evans Pharmacy until his retirement in 1991. While living in Attica, he was active in local government and community activities. He was a former member and president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Area Four Planning Commission.
He served as councilman at large for the city of Attica from 1968 to 1972. He was named citizen of the year of Attica in 1964. He was an avid tennis player and golfer and was a member of Danville Tennis Club in Illinois and a member of Harrison Hills Country Club. He enjoyed raising a vegetable garden and was known for raising asparagus.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Tamara Walker (husband: Jack) of Montgomery, Texas; a son, Barry Evans of Boise, Idaho; and a sister, Alice Smith (husband: Robert Lee) of Lafayette.
Joseph E. Bugher Jr., 46
Joseph E. Bugher Jr., 46, of 905 N. 12th St., died at 1:17 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
He was born April 1, 1955, and had been a lifelong resident of Lafayette. He graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School. He had worked in the maintenance department of CanAm Steel Corp. and had been a past union president.
Surviving are three daughters, April Cochran-Smith (husband: Dustin) of Plymouth, Mich., Chelsea Bugher and Courtney Bugher, both of Lafayette; his parents, Joseph E. and Barbara J. Chapman Bugher Sr. of Lafayette; and two ex-wives, Kim O'Keef of Lafayette and Dawn Bugher of Dayton, Ohio.
Paul E. Martin
FRANKFORT -- Paul E. Martin, 86, of 559 W. Green St., died at 10:25 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Clinton House in Frankfort, following an extended illness.
He was born Feb. 2, 1916, in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. He graduated from Frankfort High School in 1934 and then from Ventura Junior College in California. He married Margaret Sheets on Sept. 2, 1939, and she survives.
Mr. Martin retired after 40 years as a switchman with Nickel Plate Railroad. He served in the Marines from 1943 to 1945 overseas during World War II.
He was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Frankfort, a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of Moose Lodge 7 in Frankfort. He helped design and build the Optimist Little League diamond at the TPA Park in Frankfort. He was an avid golfer.
Surviving with his wife are two daughters, Julia A. Basey (husband: Charles) of Lebanon, and Janet S. Baer (husband: John M.) of Avon.
Services will be Wednesday in Frankfort.
Harold L. Bridges
Harold L. "Soap" Bridges, 88, of Terre Haute, a former Lafayette resident, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at Royal Oaks Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Jan. 29, 1914, in Terre Haute. He married Marjorie Bridges, and she survives.
Mr. Bridges was a business agent for Teamsters Local 144 and Local 543 in Lafayette. He was also a truck driver. He was a lifelong member of the Teamsters Union and the Moose Lodge.
Surviving with his wife are two sons, Larry Bridges (wife: Terri) of Tulsa, Okla., and Michael Bridges (wife: Debra) of Lafayette; a daughter, Judith Collins (husband: J.D.) of DeMotte; three stepsons, Michael Allen (wife: Ruth) of Hebron, Daniel Allen (wife: Paula) of Stanford and Stephen Allen (wife: Pam) of Murphysboro, Tenn.; three stepdaughters, Patricia Allen of Terre Haute, Carol Shake (husband: Sam) of Tampa, Fla., and Dorothy Evans (husband: Eric) of Terre Haute; a brother, Richard Bridges of Terre Haute; and a sister, Cecelia Jennings of Terre Haute.
Carl P. Dunbar
Carl P. Dunbar, 76, died at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, in his residence at 7506 Indiana 26 E.
He was born March 18, 1925, in Lula, Ky., and had lived in Lafayette since 1948.
Mr. Dunbar married Doris Ann Anderson on June 25, 1948, in Rossville, Ga. She preceded him in death on May 30, 1999.
He worked at Alton Boxboard for 10 years, then was a truck driver for 17 years. He enjoyed raising cattle.
Surviving are three sons, James A. Dunbar (wife: Sherry) and Steve L. Dunbar (wife: Judith A.), both of Lafayette, and Timothy G. Dunbar (wife: Linda) of Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Carla F. Redding (husband: Barry) of Lafayette and Kimberly A. Mattox (husband: Greg) of Buck Creek; two sisters, Ruth Anne Clark of Leavenworth, Kan., and Arlene Bertram of Owensboro, Ky.; and four brothers, Joe Dunbar of Riverside, Calif., Ralph Dunbar of Glasgow, Ky., Lyle Dunbar of Hopkinsville, Ky., and Paul Dunbar of Gainesville, Fla.
Okey R. Foster Jr., 82
Okey Ray Foster Jr., 82, of Fremont, died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2002, in his residence.
Born Jan. 15, 1920, in Fayette County, W.Va., he moved to Fremont from Lafayette in 1983. Mr. Foster was the retired vice president of the family business, Metcon Contractors in Lafayette. He was a former superintendent at Ruckman & Hanson Construction Co. in Fort Wayne for 23 years.
Mr. Foster was a member of the Masonic-Northeastern Lodge 210 in Fremont, Scottish Rite Valley of Fort Wayne, and the Fremont American Legion Cassel Post 257. He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps.
He married Madge G. Gadd on May 28, 1946, at Catlettsburg, Ky., and she survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, E. Gwen Nigro (husband: John) of Angola; four sons, Donald Foster (wife: Rhonda) of Van Wert, Ohio, James Foster (wife: Martha) of West Lafayette, Steven Foster (wife: Lynn Wiseman) of Angola and John Foster (wife: Patty) of Fremont; and two sisters, Stella Foster Lively and Sue Foster Schrader, both of Lookout, W.Va.
Jarrett L. James
BROOK -- Jarrett Lee James, 49, of Lodi, Calif., relative of Brook residents, died Monday, March 11, 2002, in his residence.
He was born Oct. 5, 1952, in Texas, worked for a landscaper for a number of years and served in the Air Force.
On March 11, 2000, he married Lori James, who also died March 11, 2002.
Mr. James was a member of the Salvation Army.
Surviving are a daughter, Rachel Marie Poe of Bryant, Ark.; his mother, Mary E. James of Brook; and a brother, Larry "Burt" James (wife: Marcie) of Brook.
Services are Monday in Brook.
Carol Lynn Barnes
WILLIAMSPORT -- Carol Lynn Schultz Barnes, 56, of Danville, Ill., and relative of Williamsport residents, died at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 6, 2002, in her residence.
She was born April 20, 1945, in Danville.
Mrs. Barnes graduated from Bismarck High School in 1962.
She worked for Meis and for Elder Beerman, where she received a 20-year pin.
She married Jerry Barnes on Nov. 23, 1962, in Danville, and he survives.
She was a member of the Second Church of Christ in Danville. Her hobbies included flowers and gardening.
Surviving with her husband are two sons, Kevin Barnes (wife: Beth) of Perrysville and Brad Barnes (wife: Becky) of Heyworth, Ill.; three brothers, Don Schultz (wife: Betty) of Bismarck, Ill., Harold Schultz (wife: Barbara) of Omaha, Neb., and Dale Schultz of Rossville, Ill.; and a sister, Joyce Cronkhite (husband: Glen) of Danville.
Services are Wednesday in Danville.
