Helen L. Cassaday, 79, of Huntington, a credit manager for 17 years, died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at Heritage of Huntington.
The Huntington native had worked for Butler Paper, was a member of Saint Peter and Paul Catholic Church and a tutor for the church Literacy Council. Surviving are a son, William P. of Palm Beach Garden, Fla.; a brother, Thomas Scheer of Huntington; a sister, Phyllis Yaste of Oregon, Ill.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services are 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Huntington. Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. today with a 6 p.m. rosary service at Deal-Robbins & Van Gilder, Huntington. Betty L. Humbarger, 83, of Antwerp, Ohio, a member of Royal Neighbors of America, died Monday, Feb. 24, 2003, at Brookview Healthcare Center in Defiance.
The Antwerp native worked at Dana Weatherhead for 25 years as a tester. Surviving are her husband, Wayne; sons Ted of Van Wert and Lynn of Antwerp; brothers Willis, Richard and Jim Friend, all of Antwerp; a sister, Janet DeLong of Antwerp; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister and four brothers. Services are 11 a.m. Thursday at Dooley Funeral Home, Antwerp, with calling from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday. F. Pauline Shoemaker, 82, of North Webster, a former payroll clerk, died Sunday, Feb. 23, 2003, at Woodview Healthcare in Fort Wayne.
The Majenica native had worked at Sealtest Foods in Huntington for 35 years. She was a member of the Home Demonstration Club, Holiday Ramblers Square Dance Club and numerous camping clubs, and was formerly of Roanoke, Huntington and Plymouth. She was a former member of Trinity Methodist Church in Huntington and Saturn Christian Church. Surviving are a son, Dale J. Thompson of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Karen Sprow of Machies, Maine; a sister, Joan Gillman of Wolcottville; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husbands Robert E. Thompson, L. Haven Ottinger and Herman Shoemaker and a son, Gale M. Thompson. Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, Columbia City, with calling from 2 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at Woodlawn cemetery, Warren. Rick "Jessie" A. Ley, 54, of Fort Wayne, a gardener for Lakeside Rose Garden, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at home.
The Fort Wayne native was also a musician. Surviving are his wife, Sonja M.; sons Damian and Julian Webb and Elijah MacAfee, all of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Heather Ley of Kentucky; his mother, Phyllis Ley of Fort Wayne; brothers Bruce, Joel, Dennis, Andrew and Matthew, all of Fort Wayne, and Eric of Lafayette; a sister, Elizabeth Ley of Fort Wayne; and one grandchild. A daughter, Rachel, preceded him in death. Memorial services are 1 p.m. Friday at Broadway Christian Church, 910 Broadway, with family receiving friends following services. Jones Jr. of Orlando, Fla.; sisters Rebecca Jones, Corrine Johnson, Ruby J. Sullivan and Eddie M. Robinson, all of Hayti, Mo.; and five grandchildren. A sister preceded her in death. The White Hall, Ark., native was retired from Fort Wayne Public Transportation Corp. and a member of Prince Hall Masonic Lodge 114. Surviving are his wife, Patricia; and sisters W. "She loved her family, outdoors and the lake." The Kentucky native retired in the 1970s from Airport restaurant after 20 years of service. She was a member of Avalon Missionary Church and enjoyed gardening and antiques. Surviving are daughters Judith Griest of Ossian and Phyllis Boger of Fort Wayne; her friend, Melvin Spaw of Fort Wayne; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The North Tonawanda, N.Y., native worked for Food Marketing Corp. as a graphic artist, for Miller Advertising as an art director and played with big bands and small combos. He was a member of Simpson United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and a World War II U.S. Army veteran. Surviving are his wife, Frances; a son, Terry O. of Fort Wayne; a daughter, Linda K. Greenwalt of Indianapolis; a brother, Eugene W. of Clarence, N.Y.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hannah L., and a brother. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at D.O. The Allen County native was a former Allen County councilman, Milan Township trustee for eight years from 1958 to 1966, and a former member of the Fort Wayne National Bank board Woodburn Branch. He was a member of Woodburn Missionary Church. Surviving are his wife, Loraine; a son, Roger of Harlan; brothers Don and Ross, both of New Haven; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth, a daughter, Ann Oehler, a sister and a brother. Services are 11 a.m. Saturday at Woodburn Missionary Church, 5108 Bull Rapids Road, Woodburn, with calling a half hour before services and also from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, all at the church. The Fort Wayne native retired in 1981 from International Harvester Co. in the parts department after 30 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann; a son, Larry of Markle; a daughter, Sharon Maxwell of Fort Wayne; brothers Myron and Arden, both of Fort Wayne; a sister, Majorie Booker of Fort Wayne; and two grandchildren.
