The Marion native was a member of American Legion Post 95 in Jonesboro and a 1967 graduate of Mississinewa High School in Gas City. Surviving is a son, J.D. Gilbert of Jonesboro. His parents, Lavern C. and Erma M., preceded him in death. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Myers Funeral Home, Huntington, with calling from 9 a.m. until services. Junior Devon Iden, 78, of Kimmell, who was a self-employed farmer, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at Oak Leaf Village Nursing Center of Ligonier. The Kimmell native was a member of Broadway Christian Church and past Noble County farmer of the year. He enjoyed traveling. Surviving are his wife, Gloria; daughters Becky Miller of Elkhart, Linda Barhydt of Goshen and Trudy White of Titusville, Fla.; a son, Terry of Kimmell; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother. Services are 11 a.m. Friday at Orr Funeral Home, Ligonier, with calling from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be at Sparta cemetery. Susan LaDial Breading, 88, of Warsaw, chairwoman of the nursing committee of the American Red Cross, died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2002, at Kosciusko Community Hospital.
The Marion native was co-owner of Lake City Wholesale, a member of First United Methodist Church and American Legion Auxiliary and a Gray Lady for the American Red Cross. Surviving are a son, Tom of Warsaw; and a granddaughter. Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw, with calling from 4 to 8 p.m. today. Helen Eileen Warble, 92, of Syracuse, a former member of North Webster Fireman's Auxiliary Bowling team, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at Goshen General Hospital. The Peru native was a homemaker, had worked for Essex in Ligonier and was formerly of North Webster. Surviving are a daughter, Joann Harrison of Syracuse; a son, George of Pierceton; sisters Imogene Menzie of North Webster and Jean Davis of Ligonier; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, a daughter and three brothers. Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, Syracuse, with calling one hour before services and also from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The Rosie, Ark., native worked at Sheller Globe for many years and attended Sugar Grove Church of the Nazarene, Jay County. Surviving are daughters Karen McFarland, Phyllis Platt and Terry Phillips, all of Pennville, and Sharon Brown of Portland; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. The Auburn native retired from International Harvester after 36 years of service in both Fort Wayne and Springfield, Ohio. He was a U.S. Army veteran, member of Loyal Order of Moose and Auburn American Legion. Surviving are daughters Tonya Bingham of Urbana, Ohio, and Jackie Slone of Angola; brothers Jerry and Joe, both of Butler, and Bob of Waterloo; sisters, Sally Mae Farmer of Garrett, Betty Lou Sutton of Michigan, Mary Ann McNamara of Ohio, Pat Patrick of Waterloo, Cindy Rowe of Auburn, Kathy Ferrell of Texas, and Joyce and Joan Brown, both of Avilla; and four grandchildren. Charles Gilford "Bus" Bennett, 82, of Columbia City, a lifelong farmer, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana in Fort Wayne.
The Wolf Lake native retired in 1999 from farming and had retired in 1982 from American Hoist in Fort Wayne after 15 years of service. He was formerly of Noble County, where he had farmed for 46 years. Surviving are his wife, Nila; sons Stephen of Huntington and Robert of Columbia City; a daughter, Karen Scott of Leesburg; a sister, Doris Wolfe of Larwill; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters. Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City, with calling from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. The Wabash County, Ind., native was formerly of Fort Wayne. She was a homemaker and member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Surviving are sons Edwin W. of Convoy and Gary L. of Bluffton, Ind.; a brother Edwin H. White of Sebring, Fla.; a sister, Joanna J. Ranck of LaFontaine, Ind.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters. The Huntington native had worked for the Huntington County Community Schools System in the administration office, for Huntington North High and Central Elementary schools and Lincoln National Life Insurance Co. in Fort Wayne. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and taught kindergarten Sunday school classes. Surviving are her husband of 45 years, Benjamin C.; daughters Jayne Tomlinson of Lagro and Joan Johnson of Huntington; her mother, Evelyn Ferrell of Huntington; a sister, Earlyne Kline of South Whitley; and three grandchildren. Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Trinity United Methodist Church, Huntington. Calling is one hour before services. Surviving are a daughter, Evelyn Baker of Avilla; her mother, Helen Powell of Kendallville; sisters Carolyn Kessler of Middlebury, Bonnie Powell of Kinderhook, Mich., and Connie Sparkman of Kendallville; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene, and a son, Brian. Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethel Christian Baptist Church, Kendallville. "He enjoyed bowling and walking." The Payne, Ohio, native retired in 1968 from ABC Coach Lines after 32 years of service and worked for D.O. McComb & Sons Foster Park Funeral Home as a door greeter for 25 years. He was a member of First Christian Church, Old Fort Coin Club and Three Rivers Strollers. Surviving are sons John A. of Warsaw, James E. of Bend, Ore., and Robert S. of Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was a member of Andrews United Methodist Church and Lions Club, both of Andrews, and Amity Masonic Lodge 483. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth; a son, J.D. of Andrews; daughters Carlene Jackson of Warren and Elaine Meyer of Fayetteville, Ark.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Strouse of Decatur; sisters Deborah A. Renner of Bluffton, Catherine J. Smitley of Monroe and Teresa E. Hammond of Decatur; and brothers Michael R. Eyanson of Berne, David T. The Marion native worked at the Carnegie Public Library, danced in the Wabash Valley Dance Theater for 10 years and was active in the L.I.F.E. Center. She was a member of the student council and Spanish Club, and active in Wabash Friends Church, its Youth Group and Leadership Team. Surviving are her father, C. Randall of Wabash; her mother, Christine Curless of Wabash; a brother, Ryan J. Curless of Wabash; grandparents Larry D. and Anne Curless and Jerry and Sandy Carter, all of Wabash; and a great-grandmother, Mary Keppel of Wabash.
