James Edward Priest, age 68, of Columbia City, IN died on Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at 7:50 a.m. at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City, where he had been admitted on Tuesday. He was born in Allen County, IN on November 3, 1934 to Raymond and Ida (Bumgardner) Priest.
He completed his education in the Coesse schools. Employed by Wabash Magnetics, Huntington, IN for three years, he also worked and resided on the family farm until he moved to Meadowbrook Manor, Columbia City, in 1997. Never married
, he was a member of the Dunfee Missionary Church.
Survivors include two brothers, Ray L. (Delores) Priest of Fort Wayne, IN and Maurice Priest of AZ, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lois L. Rittenhouse who died on January 29, 2002 and a brother, Kenneth Priest.
The funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2003 at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City with Pastor Jeff Spence from Dunfee Missionary Church officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne, IN. Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.

Paul W. Faulkner, age 73, of 2724 E 100 S, Columbia City, IN died at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2003 at the Renaissance Village Nursing Home, rural Whitley County, IN where he was admitted on March 7, 2003. He was born in Huntington County, IN on January 11, 1930 to Wayne and Marjorie (Hester) Faulkner.
Paul was reared in Missouri and graduated from Mindenmines Missouri City High School with the Class of 1948, he later also graduated from Reppert Auctioneer School, Decatur, IN. He then entered the United States Navy and served from December 16, 1949 to December 15, 1949. After his discharge he moved back to Huntington, IN and then came to Columbia City in 1951. He married
Virginia K. Bockelman on December 20, 1973 in Huntington, IN. She survives.
Mr. Faulkner was a former teacher on the faculty at the Reppert School of Auctioneering and he was also an auctioneer and a live stock buyer for Producer's Marketing Association, Columbia City, IN. Lastly he and his wife, Virginia, owned and operated the Green Acres Sod Farm, Collins, IN.
He was a member of the Hope Lutheran Church, Columbia City, IN and the Indiana Auctioneers Association, Whitley County 4-H, Inc. board member from 1986-1991 and also served as a auctioneer for the annual 4-H Cake Auction for many years, Columbia City Future Farmer's of America Honorary Chapter Farmer, in 1981 the Indiana Beef Cattle Association awarded Mr. Faulkner the "Top Local Membership Chairman".
He is survived by his wife Virginia K. Faulkner, Columbia City, IN; 2 step sons, Tim (Annette) Lamle, Columbia City, IN and Mark (Hollie) Lamle of Fort Wayne, IN: 4 grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 sons, Ronald and Larry Faulkner and 4 brothers, John, Larry, Eldon and Erle Faulkner and 1 sister Marlene Carrouthers.
Visitation will be held from 2-9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2003 at 2:00 p. m. at the funeral home with Pastor Judith Follis, of the Hope Lutheran Church officiating. Dean E. Springer, age 66, 1524 South 600 East, Columbia City, Union Twp., IN 46725 died at 1:00 a.m. on Monday March 17, 2003 at his residence. He was born on November 7, 1936 to Paul J. and Viola Marie (Trennepohl) Springer in Wells County, IN.
He married
Phyllis J. Wood on September 15, 1956 at Coesse United Methodist Church.
He was first employed by the Whitley County Highway Department for 10 years, Essex in Columbia City for 15 years, and he retired from the Columbia City Street Department in November, 2001 after 19 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Columbia City; 4 children, Gary E. Springer from Columbia City, Margaret "Margie" (Randy) Herron from Churubusco, IN, Robert P. Springer from San Francisco, CA and Deana M. (Benjamin) Beltz from Columbia City; 4 grandchildren, Chuck E. (Erin) Springer, Timothy and Shaun Springer, and Brandi Herron; 1 sister, Karen A. (Mike) Stephenson from Lake James, IN ;1 aunt, Lorene Trennepohl from Indianapolis, IN. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son, David DeWight Springer who died on May 21, 1961, and a sister, Alice.

Helen J. Waters, age 66, of 2506 Shew Street, Albion, IN died at 4:05 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 2003 at Lutheran Hospital of IN, Fort Wayne, IN. She was born on December 16, 1936 to Everett and Lelia (Berry) Burley. She was educated in the Huntington County School System.
She married
Earl L. Waters on October 27, 1953 in Huntington, IN. She has resided most of her life in Huntington, IN and she moved to Noble County, IN in 1976. She worked at Utrad, Huntington, IN and Walker Restaurant, Wolf Lake, IN. She was a member of the Mormon Church.
Survivors include her husband, Earl L. from Albion; 4 daughters, Cindy Lou (Bill) Hartman from Fort Wayne, IN; Carol Sue (David) Warkentin from Huntington, IN; Diana (Terry) Warren from High Lake, IN; Randi (Rick) Barrick from Bluffton, IN; 9 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Anna Mitch, Esther Crotty, and Emma Harris all from Huntington, IN; 2 brothers, Arthur Burley from AZ and William Burley from IL.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Marcella Waters; 2 brothers, George and Carl Burley; 6 sisters, Leona Butler, Betty Walker, Hazel Waters, Minnie Martinec, Ruby Kersey, and Gladys Reed.
At her request, there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 13, 2003 at Big Lake Church of God, 6955 North State Road 109, Columbia City, IN. Robert L. "Bob" Roberson, age 42, formerly of Churubusco, IN died at 8:59 p.m. in Collinsville, Tulsa County, OK at the scene of an accident on Highway 169 Tuesday, January 28, 2003. He was born at Whitley County Memorial Hospital, Columbia City, IN on February 14, 1960 to Robert E. and Tricia R. (Feighner) Roberson.
He graduated with the Class of 1978 from Carroll High School, Fort Wayne, IN. He was formerly employed by Lincoln Food Service, Fort Wayne, IN on the assembly line. He was married
to Mary Jane North at Eel River Baptist Church, Churubusco, IN. She died on December 11, 1995.
Survivors include a son, Jacob D. Roberson of Churubusco, IN; his mother, Tricia R. of Fort Wayne, IN; two brothers, Brian J. (Kathy) Roberson of Fort Wayne and Barry A. (Michelle) Roberson of Churubusco; one sister, Connie (David) Mathieu of Avon, IN; a granddaughter, Leylah Jane Roberson of Columbia City, IN; a grandmother, Cecile A. Roberson of Churubusco; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane; father, Robert E. who died January 25, 2001; a grandfather, Samuel P. Roberson; and grandparents, Russell A. and Mary Ellen Feighner.

Ralph Jacob Swihart, age 92, of 309 North Oak Street, Columbia City, IN 46725, died at 11:03 p.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2003 at Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Home, Columbia City, IN. He was born in Whitley County, IN on May 14, 1910 to Clarence A. and Bertha (France) Swihart.
He was reared in Allen County, IN and obtained 8 years of education in the Allen County school system. He then served during WWII from April 17, 1942-August 7, 1945 as a Private First Class with the Headquarter Company 1st Bn 377th Infantry.
He married
Anna M. Bahr on January 24, 1942 in Waynedale, IN. After his marriage, he and his wife moved to Huntington County and lived there for 50 years. In 1996, he moved to his present home. He was a member of and Past Commander of the American Legion Post #160 of Roanoke, IN where he joined in 1946. He was an avid gardener and farmer. His employment includes being a forklift operator at the former International Harvester now Navistar, Fort Wayne, IN for 37 years before retiring in 1970.
He is survived by his wife, Anna M. Swihart of Columbia City, IN; 2 daughters, Eleanore Bodenhamer of Tulsa, OK and Nancy (Don) Davis of Columbia City, IN; 1 son, Leroy (Helen) Swihart of Dayton, OH; 2 brothers, Glen Swihart of Fort Wayne, IN and Carl Swihart of Sevierville, TN; 13 grandchidlren and 27 great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Albert, Ned and Charles Swihart; and 3 sisters, May Saylor, Ruth Taylor and Alice Porter.

Stanley Smith Mullendore, age 89, 410 West Van Buren Street, Columbia City, IN 46725 died at 4:57 a.m. on Sunday, January 5, 2003 at his residence. He had been ill for a brief few weeks. He was born on August 24, 1913 in Washington Township, Whitley County, IN to Aaron and Mary (Smith) Mullendore.
His formative years were spent in Whitley County and he graduated from Columbia City High School with honors in 1931. As a freshman in high school, he was the National Penmanship champion. Active in athletics, he was a four sport letterman playing baseball, basketball, football and track, and he was runnerup for the Athletic Blanket in 1931. After graduation, he worked at Blue Bell Corporation, Columbia City, IN.
He entered the military service at the outbreak of World War II in December 1941. He joined the Army Medical Corps and he was stationed in Panama prior to being deployed to the war's European Theatre. He was rapidly promoted to the rank of major and he was instrumental in putting into operation a 5, 000 bed hospital in Paris, France. Near war's end, he was recommended for promotion to the rank of Colonel. After the war, he continued in the Army Reserves for a total of nearly 20 years of military service.
Upon returning to Columbia City in 1946, he was encouraged by Ralph Gates to enter politics and he ran for the office of Whitley County Auditor on the Republican ticket. After canvassing the entire county and knocking on virtually each constituent's door, he was elected to that office between 1947-1951.
He married
Mildred "Millie" Wagner of Allen County, IN on December 10, 1947 in Goshen, IN with the Rev. Donald Bailey of the United Methodist Church officiating. He and his wife just celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary last month with a luncheon at Don Hall's Factory followed by a surprise party at their home hosted by his family.
The Mullendore's built their first home in 1948 on Crooked Lake, Noble County, IN with plans he designed and he has lived at his current residence since the winter of 1963. An avid fisherman, hunter, golfer, bowler, winning numerous league championships over the years, and woodworker, he enjoyed building furniture, cabinetry, and finely made boxes and frames. His talents at intricate construction led him to build a one-seater, single engine airplane from his own plans due to his interest in flying. He was a licensed pilot, soloing at Smith Field, Fort Wayne, IN in 1949. He logged countless hours in the air and he was very close to attaining his commercial pilot's license when his next important community calling came to the fore front.
In 1951, Whitley County's hospital needs were expanding and Mr. Mullendore was hired as administrator for the newly built Whitley County Memorial Hospital. He expertly served from 1951 until 1967, carefully managing the hospital's financing and expansion programs, hiring of new staff and personnel, and bringing the new hospital to full potential and service to the community. During his tenure as administrator, the hospital's many problems in staff absences were handled by Mr. Mullendore, whether the problem was in manning the pharmacy or taking care of linen needs in the laundry on holidays when the staff ran short. Adept business skills, by him, kept the hospital running in the black and within budget all 16 years. All babies born at the hospital from 1951 and 1967 will find his signature on their hospital birth certificates, that number tallying several thousand.
After retirement from the hospital in the summer of 1967, he opened his real estate and tax preparation office, "Diversified Services, " handling the transactions as a licensed broker. In 1968, he turned his attention to food and dining with the purchase of Mullendore's Broasted Chicken, South Main Street, Columbia City. Columbia City was indeed fortunate to enjoy his fine culinary talents and friendliness for 12 years owning the restaurant along with his wife and 2 children. He and his wife were also some of the original stockholders of the Crooked Lake Golf Course.
In 1960, he began farming his family farm, taking over from his father, Aaron Mullendore's acreage in Washington Township, which has been in the Mullendore family since 1836. The farm is presently being certified in Indianapolis as a "Hoosier Homestead" for its 167 years of same family ownership. Mr. Mullendore was very proud of that fact and he had continued to be active in the farm's operation until the last 5 years when his eldest grandson, Aaron Oliver, took over the operation.
He was a member of the Columbia City United Methodist Church, American Legion Post #98 and a past member of the Columbia City Elks Lodge #1417.
He is survived by his wife Mildred "Millie" Mullendore of Columbia City; one daughter, Jayne (Danny R.) Oliver of Columbia City; one son, Jeffrey Lowell Mullendore of Columbia City; 5 grandchildren including Aaron, Joseph and Danielle Oliver and Drew and Emma Mullendore, all of Columbia City. He is also survived by several cousins, 9 nephews and 3 nieces, many great-nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Margaret Mullendore Nelson; and 2 infant children, Amy Lou and Vincent Mullendore.
Public visitation will be on Tuesday, January 7, 2003 from 2-8:00 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN. Private family funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning, January 8, 2003 at the funeral home with Pastor Jack Scott of the Columbia City United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at the Jefferson Chapel cemetery. Memorial bequests may be given in Mr. Mullendore's memory to either Parkview Whitley Hospice or to the Indiana University/Purdue University Cancer Research. Franklin M. Walker, age 83, of 407 North Chauncey Street, Columbia City, IN 46725 died at 9:53 p.m. on Thursday, December 26, 2002 at Parkview Whitley Hospital, Columbia City, IN after becoming ill at his home early Christmas day. He was born in Whitley County, IN on December 10, 1919 to Frank H. and Frances M. (Patty) Walker.
He attended Columbia City High School for ten years and he has spent his entire lifetime in Columbia City. He served with the United States Army during WWII from 1941-1945. He married
Dorothy J. Buckles in New Haven, IN on November 22, 1945. At the age of 15, he began working for the Pennsylvania Railroad and he retired after 20 years. He also worked as a Supervisor for Dana Corporation and retired in December, 1981 after 25 years employment. His memberships included the American Legion Post #98 and the Masonic Lodge both of Columbia City, IN.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dorothy J. Walker, 407 North Chauncey Street, Columbia City, IN 46725; one daughter, Mrs. Phil (Marcia) Gordon, Columbia City, IN 46725; 2 grandchildren, Michelle (Todd) Clark and Melissa (Jonathan) Rose; 5 great grandchildren; 2 sisters Luella Orr from Ligioner, IN and Charlotte (Charles) Stugill from Woodburn, IN; and a half- brother, Lewis Walker from Hebron, IN. He is preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers including Marshall, Albie and Thomas Walker.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 29, 2002 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN.
