Lela P. Ellenwood, age 94, of South Whitley, IN died at 7:20 a.m. on Thursday, April 24, 2003 at University Park Nursing Center, Fort Wayne, IN. She was born in Convoy, OH on October 23, 1908 to William and Lorena (Bischoff) Reidenbach. She graduated with the Class of 1925 from Convoy High School.
In 1925, she moved from Convoy, OH to Fort Wayne, IN where she remained until her death. She married
Orville W. Ellenwood on April 10, 1930. Prior to 1958, she was employed by Wolf and Dessauer, and she retired from Fort Wayne City Utilities in 1970. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne.
Survivors include a daughter, Marcia (Ray) Tinkel of South Whitley; a son, Richard (Penny) Ellenwood from Fort Wayne; a son-in-law, Robert (Nancy) Passwater from Big Long Lake, Noble County, IN; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Orville who died in 1957, a daughter, Karen Passwater, 4 sisters, Ora Beck, Lucille May, Willie Bower, and Winnie Hayhurst, and 3 brothers, Otto, Norman and William Reidenbach.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2003 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 27th at the funeral home with Chaplain Teresa Bucher from Heartland Home Health Care & Hospice officiating. Jeanette L. Weirick, age 72, of 2950 West Old Trail Road, Columbia City, IN 46725 died at 1:25 a.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2003 at Miller's Merry Manor Nursing Home, Inc., Columbia City, IN. She was born in Loraine, Etna Troy Township, Whitley County, IN on October 25, 1930 to Glen and Golda Blanchard (Stapels) Foster.
She received her education at the former Columbia City West Ward School and she spent her entire lifetime in the Columbia City area. She married
James R. Weirick, Sr. on March 1, 1947 in Larwill, IN. She was a member of the Free Methodist Church, War Mothers and a charter member of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and the Ruth Rebekah Lodge. She was a homemaker and had also worked earlier at the Blue Bell Company and Weatherhead both in Columbia City.
She is survived by husband, James R. Weirick, Sr., Columbia City, IN; 2 sons, Lynn A. (Carlene) and James R. (Donna) Weirick, Jr. both of Columbia City, IN and 1 daughter, Brenda Jagger, Larwill, IN; 8 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. 1 sister, Betty Hawn, of Columbia City, IN and 1 brother, Bill Foster, Reno, NV. She is preceded in death by her parents and 1 sister, Margaret Foster.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at the funeral home with Pastor Karen Biddle of the West Point United Methodist Church officiating. Faith Ellen Karst, age 87, of 411 North Wolf Road and formerly of 199 E 300 N, Columbia City, IN 46725 died at 6:15 a.m. on Sunday, April 27, 2003 at the Oaks Living Center, Columbia City, IN where she had resided since 1999. She was born in Thorncreek Township, Whitley County, IN on February 17, 1916 to Clarence and Effie Bell (Appleton) Judd.
She attended Thorncreek Township School. She married
Julius Sylvester "Toot" Karst on November 9, 1946 in Columbia City by Pastor Marion Shroyer in his home. She spent her entire lifetime in the Columbia City area.
She assisted her husband on the family farm and she was a homemaker and seamstress. As a young lady, she worked at Blue Bell for 10 years. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
She is survived by 1 daughter, Mrs. Robert (Kathy Sue) Nicodemus, Columbia City, IN and 1 granddaughter, Holly M. Nicodemus, Columbia City, IN. Sisters, Edith Burnworth, Columbia City, IN and Wilma Crabill, Garrett, IN; 1 brother Franklin L. Judd, New York, NY.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Julius S. Karst, who died on November 15, 2001 and 3 sisters, Hazel E. Judd, Eileen Moore, Elma, 8 brothers, Ralph E., Kenneth D., Glen E., Dale, Gerald, Lester, Harrold, and Donald Eugene Judd.
Visitation will be held from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday April 30, 2003 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN. D. Joan Pretorius, age 70, of Columbia City, IN died at 3:03 a.m. on Friday, April 18, 2003 at Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne, IN. She was born on October 5, 1932 to Ellis and Mildred Louise (Pelkey) Miller in Fort Wayne, IN. She was educated in the Fort Wayne Community Schools.
She married
her first husband, Marvin Taylor Patterson and her second marriage was to James Robert Pretorius. She retired from IBM in 1988 in the accounts receivable department. She was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church of Albion, IN and Moose Lodge of Wabash.
She is survived by three daughters, Brenda (Lloyd) Hinsch of Fort Wayne, IN; Joan C. (Ed) Fry of Columbia City, and Carol Knach of Larwill; 1 step-daughter, Kay Grimsley of Batesville; 1 step-son, Bruce Pretorius of Wabash, IN; 4 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and 3 step-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Jim Dailey of Columbia City and Kenneth A. Miller of Hudson. Her parents, first husband who died in 1963, Marvin Patterson, second husband who died in 1991, James Pretorius, and her step-brother, Tom Dailey preceded her in death.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 20, 2003 from 3-7 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Monday, April 21, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor J. Phillip Blake from Columbia City United Methodist Church officiating. Joseph Snider, Jr. age 88, of 3375 East State Camp Road, Columbia City, IN 46725, died at 9:25 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2003 at the Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana, Fort Wayne, IN where he had been a patient since March 31.
He was born on October 15, 1914 in Jefferson Township, Whitley County, IN to Joseph Snider, Sr. and Minnie May VanWey Snider. He attended school at Jefferson Township School and electrical engineering college for 6 months in Fort Wayne, IN. He spent his lifetime in Whitley County moving to Round Lake in 1982.
His first marriage was to Alice Eloise Foster on June 20, 1934 in Valparaiso, IN. She passed away on November 6, 1971 in Columbia City, IN. His second marriage was to Betty Gause on January 1, 1973 at Jefferson Chapel United Methodist Church.
Mr. Snider was employed as an electrical technician at Wolf & Dessauer, L.S. Ayres and Lehman's Electronics, Fort Wayne, W.A. Jones and Dick's TV of Columbia City and a general farmer. He was a member of Columbia City Masonic Lodge #189, the Mizpah Shrine, Whitley County Shriners, Eagles #1906. He attended Columbia City United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Betty A. Snider, Columbia City, IN; 1 son, Charles Duane (Imelda) Snider of Columbia City, IN; 2 daughters, Joann (Paul E.) Cox and Joyce (Loyal) Douglas, both of Columbia City; 2 step-daughters, Roberta Blain of Columbia City and Rebecca Fryback of Fort Wayne; 2 step-sons, Robert Gause of Columbia City and Nathan Gause of Fort Wayne; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; 11step-grandchildren; and 14 step-great- grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Eloise, a daughter, Nancy Snider, his parents, a sister, Bessie, and a grandson, Michael A. Snider who died on April 27, 1980.
Visitation will be held from 2-9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City, IN. A Masonic Twilight Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 16, at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2003 with Pastor J. Phillip Blake from Columbia City United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove (Compton) cemetery, Columbia City. Memorial donations may be given in Mr. Snider's memory to Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital.

Billy J. Espich, 78, resident of Thorncreek Township, Whitley County, died ------ at home. He had spent over a month a Parkview Memorial Hospital, then was transferred to Specialty Select Hospital at St. Joseph Hospital for an additional 5 months before returning home with his wife, Florence, for the last two months.
He was born May 25, 1924, the 10th of 11 children to Woody and Edna D. (Knight) Espich of Fort Wayne. He attended Central High School in Fort Wayne. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in November of 1942 at the age of 17. He flew 32 missions in World War II as a B-24 tailgunner and was awarded the Distinquished Flying Cross. He declined the Purple Heart because he feared that when it was presented to his mother, she would have believed he had been killed in action.
He was Honorably Discharged, October 1, 1945. On June 25, 1947, he was united in marriage to Florence Bennett. They made their home in Fort Wayne until 1955 when they moved to Union Township, Whitley County. In 1991 they moved to Shriner Lake.
He retired from Falstaff Brewing Company with 25 years of service, then retired from Parkview Memorial Hospital after 10 years of service. During this time he opened the first pizza establishment in Columbia City, Billy's Pizza Casa.
He was a member of American Legion Post 98, the Operating Engineers Union, and a previous Board Member of the Tri-Lakes Property Owner's Association.
He was an active carpenter, plumber, electrician, fisherman, golfer, a friend to every neighbor adn most of all a very special husband and dad.
Survivors include his wife, Florence; 3 daughters, Judy (Dallas) King of Columbia City, Beverly Huff, Kokomo, and Marcia (Danny) Zeigler, Churubusco; 2 grandchildren, Kim Huff, Kokomo, and Aaron (Bambi LeFever) King. 2 Great Grandchildren, Savannah adn Zoe King, Churubusco. 2 sisters Maxine Minnich and Marlyn Shaw both of Fort Wayne.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, April 17, 2003 at 1 pm at the DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home, 600 Countryside Drive, Columbia City. Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 15, 2003 from 5-7 p.m. at Covington Memorial Funeral Home, Covington Road, Fort Wayne also on Wednesday, April 16, 2003 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Park Funeral Home. Gary Leroy "Tiny" Foster, 37, of 5493 S SR 109-57, Columbia City, Noble County, Noble Township, IN 46725 died at 5:45 a.m. on Sunday, March 23, 2003 at the Hospice Home of Northeast Indiana, Fort Wayne, IN. He became suddenly ill 2 weeks ago and was admitted to the hospital and then he was transferred to the Hospice Home. He was born at Whitley County Memorial Hosptial, Columbia City, IN on October 6, 1965 to William Walter and Connie S. (Pontzius) Foster.
He attended Thorncreek Elementary and Middle School and graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1984. He has spent his entire lifetime in Whitley and Noble County areas. He is a member of the North American Hunting and Fishing Club and ABATE of Indiana.
He married
Shawn De-An Harrison on July 12, 2001 in Whitley County, IN. He was first employed at Holmes and Company, Inc. and then Fort Wayne Foundry and lastly at Steel Dynamics, Inc., Columbia City through Executive Management Services, Fort Wayne, IN.
He is survived by his wife, Shawn De-An Harrison Foster, Columbia City, IN; his parents, William Walter and Connie S. (Pontzius) Foster, Columbia City, IN; 2 sons, Dean I. Slagal, Churubusco, IN and Jeffrey L. Slagal, Columbia City, IN; 2 sisters, Billie Jo and Jody M. Foster both of Columbia City, IN; maternal grandmother, Eleanor Pontzius, Evening Shade AR; several nieces and nephews and 4 great nephews; several aunts and uncles and Jazmine and Noble his beloved dogs and J.D. his bird. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, maternal grandfather and 2 uncles.

Dale Cummings, age 97, of 4385 East Crone Road, Smith Township, Whitley County, Columbia City, IN 46725 died at 9:10 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at Miller's Merry Manor, Inc., Columbia City, IN. He was born on August 22, 1905 in Kosciuscko County, IN to Charles Wallace and Dora Belle (Siliveus) Cummings.
He attended school at the Warsaw Elementary and High Schools, Warsaw, IN. He married
A. Kathern Crone in Greentown, Howard County, IN on March 8, 1929. She passed away on August 15, 1998. He was a gas station attendant many years ago and owned and operated the Cummings family general farm in Smith Township, Whitley County, IN. Mr. Cummings has lived on the family farm in Smith Township, Whitley County, IN since 1933 coming to Whitley County from the Warsaw, IN area. He was a member of the Collins United Methodist Church, Collins, IN.
He is survived by his son, Charles (Mary) Cummings, Columbia CIty, IN and one daughter, Donna Jean (Walter G.) Roberson, Fort Wayne, IN. 7 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, A. Kathern Cummings, and one infant son.
