John David (J.D.) Fisher
December 03, 1959 - April 08, 2009
Beloved Husband, Father, Son, Brother....Gone Too Soon...In Our Hearts Forever
John David "J.D." Fisher, 49, Logansport, died unexpectedly at 7:58 a.m. Wednesday April 8, 2009, in Johns Hopkins Medical Center, Baltimore, Maryland. On March 26th, he had neurosurgery which successfully removed a painful benign tumor inside his cervical spinal cord. However, he suffered a serious reaction to the anesthesia and pain medication which caused him to be very sick a few days after the surgery. He was just starting to feel better and arranging for transfer to the physical therapy unit when he died from a pulmonary embolism.
Born December 3, 1959, in Logansport, he was the cherished son of John Wakeland and Mary Elizabeth Kesling Fisher, who survive in Logansport. He was adored by his older sister, Patricia Ann Fisher. She survives in Monticello. J.D. grew up living above the family funeral home on West Market Street, During his teen years, he worked with his dad at the funeral home and their ambulance service. In 1978, he graduated from Logansport High School. In 1980, he graduated from Vincennes University with an Associates of Science degree in Funeral Service and returned to Logansport to continue his father's legacy of service to this community.
On June 14, 1981, in First United Methodist Church, he was married to Dawn Ellyn Sailors, who survives. J.D. and Dawn first met as toddlers in line to see Santa at a Masonic Lodge Christmas party. They were husband and wife, each other's best friend, loving parents as well as business partners working together every day for nearly 28 years.
In 1990, J.D. and Dawn purchased the family business and four years later broke ground for the new chapel on Chase Road. He poured his heart and soul into his profession. He wanted to give back to this community by providing a beautiful facility that would be a safe haven to grieving families. In 2003, he decided to expand in the growing Lafayette area by purchasing the former Landis-Loy Funeral Home, now known as Fisher-Loy Funeral Chapel. J.D. was very proud of his oldest son, Jonathan, when he graduated from mortuary college and became a licensed funeral director and embalmer in 2006. He prepared Jonathan well, teaching him so much and allowing him to grow professionally. With three generations of funeral directors, carrying on his father's legacy was more than a job to J.D., it was a calling.
Over the years, he developed a special bond with the families he served. The loyalty and friendship from the families who called upon his services were priceless to him - more than words can describe - he considered it an honor to care for their loved ones. On behalf of his entire family, we thank our loyal patrons and ask for your continued support as we work to carry on his legacy.
J.D. loved children. In high school, he worked with special needs children and adults at Woodlawn, the State Hospital and Camelot with YARC through Wheatland Avenue United Methodist Church's youth program. When his wife taught school at Pioneer, he was always helpful in classroom projects and school events. He was instrumental in the Logansport Youth Soccer program in the early 90's and helped establish the soccer program at Sangralea Valley, coaching several teams through the years. He always enjoyed youth groups touring the funeral home on field trips and loved to chat with children attending visitations. He had been a member of the Cass County 4-H Council and was a supporter of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Anything his children were involved in became his passion, too. He loved watching them in their sporting events, dance recitals, plays, scouting activities and 4-H livestock and dog shows. He was the best dad in the world and the loss is tremendous.
In addition to his oldest son, Jonathan David, he was the beloved father of Jacob Nathaniel, a senior at LHS; his princess, Sarah Michaela, a 6th grader; and Chase Donald, a 3rd grader, who was baptized on his J.D.'s 40th birthday. With dogs, Roxy and Donald, and a host of various pets and 4-H animals, their family life was never dull. Their home was always welcome to their children's friends, who also became a part of the family. He was "Uncle J.D." to his sister's children, niece Nicole Haycraft and her husband Zack, of Chicago, IL and Jarrett Stark and his wife Melissa, of Fairfax, VA and to the children of his brother-in-law Duane Sailors and his wife Lori ~ Morgan and Drew Sailors, all of Logansport. His great-niece, Kiera Stark, was born March 17th and visited him at the hospital.
Also surviving are his mother-in-law, Marjorie Sailors, of Logansport; several uncles and aunts, cousins and friends, including the staff of Fisher Funeral Chapel, who were not just employees but like family to him.
J.D. was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he had served as a trustee. Over the years, he became friends with several local pastors and had many deep discussions about his faith, something that sustained him through his career and prepared him for his final days.
He was a Past Master of Tipton Masonic Lodge No. 33 and Past Master Counselor of the Order of DeMolay. He was a member of the Murat Shrine Club, Logansport Shrine Club, Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite, Logansport Rotary, Eagles Aerie No. 323, past president of Lions and also Evening Exchange Club, and past president of the Sangralea Valley Association. Professionally, he served as a District Director with the Indiana Funeral Directors Association for six years. He was recognized by the National Funeral Directors Association with its highest award, the Pursuit of Excellence "Golden Eagle."
He loved the out-of-doors and had gone on hunting trips to Canada, Michigan and Utah as well as an adventurous scout fishing trip to Boundary Waters. J.D. had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed starting the morning with the gang at McDonald's.
He was preceded in death by one son, Daniel Emerson Fisher; his father-in-law, Donald Sailors; his maternal grandparents, Fred and Anna Kesling; and his paternal grandparents, Fred and Margaret Fisher.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, April 13, 2009, in Fisher Funeral Chapel where a Masonic Service will be held at 5:45 p.m. followed by a Shrine Processional.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2009, in Fisher Funeral Chapel with Revs. Bill Shannon, Douglas Mankell and Rick Woodall officiating.
Interment, officiated by Rev. Dr. Gregory Elkins, will be in Mount Hope cemetery, Logansport.
In lieu of an outpouring of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be best made with a memorial contribution to the Fisher Children Education Trust Fund in care of Logansport Savings Bank, 723 East Broadway, Logansport, IN 46947. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
