Virginia Maiolini Lewis
February 11, 1926 - July 25, 2007
Virginia Lewis passed away peacefully at the Indiana Veterans Home after a lengthy illness on Wednesday morning, July 25, 2007.
A native of Rome, Italy, Mrs. Lewis arrived at Ellis Island on July 4, 1954, as a young bride. Already fluent in two languages, she learned English quickly and then proceeded to learn to speak Russian through the Purdue University radio station. She was proud to live in America and became a US citizen as quickly as she could.
Mrs. Lewis was a young adolescent attending school in Linz, Austria, when World War II broke out, and was separated from her family. At the end of the war she met her future husband, an American GI from Lafayette, Indiana, whose outfit was assigned to help those displaced by the war to find their families. After a lengthy written courtship, they were married
in Rome, Italy, in January, 1954. As it was during the Cold War, Virginia was made to wait six months before she could join her new husband so that her background would be checked for Communist ties.
Virginia was a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Hammond, Indiana; Nifty Over Fifty Club in South Chicago Heights, and in The Sons of Italy in Chicago Heights, Illinois.
Mrs. Lewis is preceded in death by her parents, Angelo and Teresa Maiolini; three sisters, one brother, all of Rome, Italy, and her husband of 34 years, Marion F. Lewis.
She is survived by her daughter Linda Zolp; son-in-law Frank R. Zolp and much adored grandsons Frank IV, Nathan, and Christopher, all of Shererville, Indiana.
