Gilbert N. Ellis, 72 of Brazil died May 16, 2004 at 3:55am at the Clay Health Center. He was born April 3, 1932 in Brazil the son of Herschel and Dolly Orman Ellis. He was a life long farmer in Clay County. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and singing gospel music. He attended Deliverence Temple Church in Brazil.
He is survived by his children; Willard Ellis, Robert Ellis and his wife Viola, and Tony Ellis and wife Dirinda all of Brazil; and a daughter and son in law, Edna and Randy Meeks of Savannah, GA; 9 grandchildren, Deanna Draper, Michelle Eaglin, Philip Ellis, Nicholas Ellis, Sherri Kruzan, Melissa Green, Randy Meeks, Darin Bell and Jay Ellis; 6 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Herschel Ellis and his wife Shirley of Jasonville, Paul Ellis and wife Doris of California; 4 sisters, Hazel Swan and husband Forrest of Brazil, Naomi Salyers and husband Raymond of Clay City, Eva Lou P'Poole and husband Frank of Xenia, IL., and Sue Wiram and husband Dave of Pimento, IN.; several nieces and nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Phyllis Dierdorf Ellis.
Services will be held Thursday at 1:00 pm at French Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Roeschlein officiating. Burial will follow at Harmony cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 11-1.

Kelly Joe Hughes
July 01, 1955 - March 05, 2004
Kelly Joe Hughes, 48, of Brazil died at 7:40 PM Friday, March 5, 2004 at his residence.
He was born July 1, 1955 in Brazil the son of Guy A. Hughes and Marian E. Buchholz Hughes. He earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Indiana State University and was an elementary school teacher for 25 years having taught for South Putnam. He was a member of First Christian Church of Brazil, where he had served as pianist for 21 years. His hobbies included music and gardening.
Survivors include his wife, Sherri DeFronzo Hughes, whom he married June 18, 1983; his daughter, Kelsie Elizabeth Hughes; his son, Kyle Joseph Hughes; his father, Guy A. Hughes of Brazil; his brother, Howard R. Hughes and his wife Katrina of Brazil; two sisters, Charlotte A. Hayes and her husband Willard and Leah L. Schuch and her husband Martin, all of Brazil; and a large extended family including several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marian E. Hughes on October 15, 1987; and his two grandmothers, Rachael E. Hughes and Lola J. Buchholz.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at First Christian Church of Brazil with Rev. Greg Comp officiating. Interment will follow in Clearview cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM Tuesday evening at the church.
The family suggests if friends should so desire memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Association of Indiana, with envelopes available during visitation and services. Arrangements are under the direction of French Funeral Home, Brazil.

Jane E. Flockhart
May 07, 1916 - February 10, 2004
Jane E. Flockhart, 87 of Harmony died February 10, 2004 at 8:12 am at Holly Hills Healthcare Facility. She had been a resident there for only 4 weeks.
She was born May 7, 1916 in Vigo County, the daughter of Charles E. Conway and Vera Larr Conway. She graduated from Glenn High School in 1934.
November 20, 1935 she married Rev. John C. Flockhart, he preceded her in death November 10, 1994.
She worked as a nurse’s assistant in Kendallville, IN. She also worked at J.C. Penney and Loebs Dry Goods in Brazil. Her life was devoted to her husband and their life together in the ministry. She was also a loving mother and grandmother.
She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and quilting. She also had a collection of dolls, and bears that family and friends enjoyed finding for her.
She was currently attending the Union United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her two daughters and sons in law, Linda and Bill Latham of Harmony, and Janet and Ron Esterline of Martinsville, IN.; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Cheryl and John Love, Gail and Doug Williams, Chris and Rita Latham, Brad Trout, Scott and Lynn Trout, David and Lana Trout, and Adi and Bob Brown; 12 great-grandchldren, Matt Love, Mitch Love, Megan Love, Brant and Brooke Williams, Kendra Latham, Nick Latham, Allison Trout, Andrew Trout, Mick Sichting, Michelle Sichting, Katie Brown, Mason Brown; great-great-grandson, Gavin Shorter, and Zaiden Williams; one brother Jim Conway of Elyria, OH., one sister Janet McNary of Portland, OR; several nieces and nephews and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Jack Conway; and her husband.
Services will be held Saturday at 1:00pm at French Funeral Home with Revs. Dennis Alstott and Brent Harden officiating. Burial will follow at Union cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 11-1pm.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Union United Methodist Church, Window Restoration Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Rosalie Eleanor Knox
December 25, 1929 - March 17, 2004
Rosalie Eleanor “Ellie” Knox, 74 of Brazil died March 17, 2004 at 9:55am at Royal Oaks Healthcare Facility in Terre Haute.
She was born on Christmas December 25, 1929 in Bowling Green, IN. to Albert “Frank” Russell and Lillie Boomler Russell.
She married Edward “Eddie” Leroy Knox on June 25, 1950 in Three Oaks, MI.
She graduated from Galien High School in Galien, MI, in 1947. After high school she worked for Clark Equipment in Buchanan, MI. up until she married Eddie Knox and moved to Brazil in 1950 where she spent the rest of her life.
Upon coming to Brazil, Ellie began work for Indiana Governor Henry Schricker in the Department of Forestry. Over the years she has held several government jobs including a stint as the assistant superintendent of the State Highway Department in Greencastle and several offices in the Clay County Court Office including treasurers and recorders office. Later in life she attended the Smart Appearance Beauty College in Terre Haute and owned and operated her own beauty shop for several years. She was also employed at CBS in Terre Haute where she retired in 1978.
She was an avid Indiana University basketball fan and she loved the outdoors and raising her boxer dogs.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Lillie Russell, her brother William “Bud” Russell, and her sisters Claretta Rector and Pauline Lemieux.
She is survived in death by her husband Eddie Knox of Brazil; her daughter Dianne Trusler of New Albany and her daughter and son in law, Lilli and Dennis Meneely of Brazil; her grandchildren, Tammy Willan of New Albany, Traci Lawson of Los Angeles, CA., Jeremiah Willan of New Albany, Miranda Meneely of Brazil, Brandy Trusler of Sacramento, CA., Justin Meneely of Brazil and Elizabeth “Pokie” Gamble of Evansville; her great-grandchildren, Brianna Trusler of Sacramento, Tristin Brown of Brazil, Katelynn Willan of New Albany, and Chase and Carter Gamble of Evansville; her sister Betty Julbert of Center Point; many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Services will be held Saturday at 11:00am at French Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Kumpf officiating. Burial will follow at Summit Lawn cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4-8pm and again Saturday prior to services.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Clay County Humane Society in her name. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Joan Mae Hoffman
August 13, 1932 - April 07, 2004
Joan M. Hoffman, 72 of Brazil died April 7, 2004 at Union Hospital. She was born August 13, 1932 in Brazil, the daughter of Clyde and Helen Beeler McMurray.
She graduated from Brazil High School, and later achieved her LPN nursing license from Ivy Tech. She also furthered her education with an Associates Degree from Indiana State University. She worked as an evening/night supervisor at the Clay County Hospital retiring in 1994.
She enjoyed crafts, sewing and was an avid reader.
Survivors include three son and two daughters, Dick and Barbara Hoffman, Max and April Hoffman, Michael Hoffman all of Brazil, Cindy and Virgil Gardner of Jasonville, Suzanne and Larry Tucker of Brazil; 8 grandchildren, Mike Hoffman, Marjorie Hoffman, Tom Hoffman, Connie Hoffman, Jacque Hoffman, Vonda Clark, Ashley Tucker, Erika Tucker; two great-grandsons, Grant Michael Hoffman and Jacob Theisz; one brother Bob McMurray of Austin, TX. one aunt Rosemary Green of Brazil; one sister in law, Marjorie Johnson of Brazil; nieces, nephews and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Richard Hoffman on June 21, 2001.
Services will be held Saturday at 2:00pm at French Funeral Home with Brother Lyle Monnett officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be Saturday from 11-2.

Patricia Joan Hoskins
May 13, 1935 - March 14, 2004
Patricia Joan Hoskins, 68 of Brazil died March 14, 2004 at 2:20am at Cloverleaf Healthcare Facility.
She was born May 13, 1935 in Montgomery County, the daughter of David Allen Smith and Elizabeth Lee Rusk Smith. She graduated from Brazil High School, Class of 1953. She later received her LPN license following graduating from Ivy Tech. She worked at Union Hospital for 10 years and Cloverleaf Healthcare for 15 years. She was an active member of Annunciation Church. She enjoyed decorating the church; she assisted in caring for the rectory and also provided care for Father Spicuzza prior to his death. She cooked at Annunciation School in the past and enjoyed being around the children. She was well known for her flower garden at her home and neighbors all enjoyed her colorful seasonal flags that adorned her porch.
She had been a member of the VFW Auxillary and the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.
She is survived by her children, Chip and Donna Hoskins of Brazil, David and Linda Hoskins of Midland, IN., Michelle and Roger Edelbrock of Midland, TX., and Christina and Joe Gruener of Brazil; 11 grandchildren, Tiffany Hoskins, Jacqueline Hoskins, Matthew Hoskins, Zech Hoskins, Sarah Hoskins, Abram Hoskins, Nicole Edelbrock, Benjamin Edelbrock, Annie Edelbrock, Adam Edelbrock and Josh Gruener; four sisters, Delores Smith and husband Frank of Brazil, Carolyn and C.R. Boyd of Brazil, Kay Bussing also of Brazil, and Ginger Lamb and husband Charles of Terre Haute; several niece, nephews and extended family.
Her parents, one brother Richard Smith, preceded her in death.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 1:00pm at Annunciation Church with Father Rob Hausladen officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday at French Funeral Home from 4-8pm with Rosary at 7:00pm.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made in her memory to Annunciation Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Virginia M. Freeman
December 23, 1927 - March 16, 2004
Virginia M. Freeman, 76 of Clay City died March 16, 2004 at 4:35pm at Southwood Healthcare Facility.
She was born December 23, 1927 in Brazil, the daughter of Theodore Mark Bass, Sr. and Laura Mae Bryant Bass. She married Robert Freeman, Jr. on December 20, 1952. He passed away November 22, 1974. She worked as a hostess and waitress at the LK Restaurant several years ago. She most recently helped her son and daughter in law at their restaurant in Clay City. She was a member of the Coalmont Church of God. She enjoyed being a resident at Southwood and participated in many activities.
She is survived by her two sons John Russell Freeman of Plainfield, and Bob and Angie Freeman of Clay City; grandchildren, Vicky Freeman, Laura Freeman and Erin Freeman; 7 great-grandchildren; two brothers Kenneth Bass, Sr, and Theodore Bass; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son William Wayne Freeman, one son and daughter in infancy; daughter in law, Clairsee “Jo” Freeman; one sister Mary Jane Weaver; one brother Robert Bass.
Services will be held Friday at 11:00am at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home with Rev. Rehmel officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8pm and again Friday prior to services.

Mary M. Howard
July 28, 1916 - August 05, 2004
Mary M. Howard, 88 of Brazil died August 5, 2004 at St. Vincent Clay Hospital.
She was born July 28, 1916 in Parke County, the daughter of Frank Murphy and Olive Lynch Murphy. She attended school in Bridgeton. In 1932 she married Harold Leo Howard. He preceded her in death September 7, 1986. She was a charter member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Brazil. She had lived at Meridian Towers for over 20 years. She was a member of the Brazil Eagles Lodge and the Moose Lodge. She was a devoted wife and mother and enjoyed being with family.
She is survived by her one son and daughter in law, John and Deanna Howard of Brazil; three daughters, Barbara Tolbert and Peggy Wells both of Brazil and Carol Biggs of Terre Haute; 7 grandchildren, Susan Ferry and husband Mike, Gloria Erb, Alan Stevens, Troy Howard and wife Merrie Lou, Elizabeth Francis, Vickie Bays and husband George, and Bobbie Ringo and husband Kevin; 18 great-grandchildren; three sisters in law, Jean Howard, Betty Howard, and Betty Rose all of Brazil; one brother in law, Garland Williams of Carbon; many niece, nephews and other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; three sisters, Pauline Summers Brown, Clara Williams, and Ruth Pittman; two grandchildren, Peggy Stevens, and Jeffrey Howard; two sons in law, Everett Biggs, and Roy Tolbert.
Services will be held Monday at 1:00pm at French Funeral Home with Rev. Leonard Steeb officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Lawn cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-8pm and again Monday prior to services.

Joyce C. Karn
May 23, 1936 - August 17, 2004
Joyce C. Karn, 68 of Brazil died August 17, 2004 at 12:43am at her residence.
She was born May 23, 1936 in Monticello, IN the daughter of Archie Carl Doud and Bessie Elkins Doud. She graduated from Roosevelt High School, Class of 1954. She graduated from St. Elizabeth Hospital Nursing School in 1957. She worked at the Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis, then later at Clay County Hospital and the Clay Health Center.
She met Larry Karn while nursing in Indianapolis. They married July 1, 1967 and relocated to the Brazil area in 1970.
She enjoyed collecting dolls and jewelry. She was above all a devoted caregiver to all her family and friends.
She is survived by her husband Larry Karn of Brazil; three sons, Greg Karn and wife Janice and Brad Karn and wife Shelly all of Brazil, Jeff Karn of Bloomington; one daughter Kim Holley and her husband Ted of Brazil; 8 grandchildren, Jennifer Karn, Brad Karn II, Benjamin Karn, Jeffrey Karn II, Johnathon Holley, Nicholas Karn, Chelsea Holley, and Kaileb Holley; two sisters, Donna Carney and husband Jack of Leheigh, FL, and Patty Horney and husband Mike of Monticello; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Francine Doud and Wanda Kessler; one brother Basil Doud.
Services will be held Saturday at 1:00 pm at Miller Memorial Chapel with Pastor Steve Brattain officiating. Burial will follow at Bee Ridge cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7pm at again Saturday prior to services.

Amber Lynn Jolly
January 08, 1983 - August 08, 2004
Amber Lynn Jolly, 21, of Clay City, died Sunday August 8, 2004 at 5:10 pm from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was born January 8, 1983 in Pender, Nebraska, the daughter of Donald and Linda Ferguson Barron. She lived in the Clay City area from the age of one until ten, when her parents relocated to the Okeechobee, Florida area. She lived in Florida until two years ago, when she and her husband moved back to Clay City. She had just completed her GED degree and had celebrated her graduation. She had been working at Great Dane in Brazil since April of 2004. She loved her husband and children dearly.
She is survived by her husband Billy Jolly; their children, Taylor Jade Jolly age 2 1/2, and Riley McKenzie Jolly age 1; her parents, Don and Linda Barron of Boynton Beach, FL; three sisters and brothers in law, Mischelle and Tom Anderson of Brazil, Randi and Jim Staley of Clay City, and Kimberly and Jeremy Mikel of Sebring, FL; one brother and sister in law, Donald Barron II and wife Dejah of Jasonville; father and mother in law, Billy Wayne and Bessie Mae Green of Lorida, FL; one brother in law, Jason Jolly; three sisters in law, Reva Willbarger, Jennifer Green, and Billie Jean Green; 16 nieces and nephews, many aunts and uncles and a large extended family.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1:00 pm at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home with Pastor Harpole officiating. Burial will follow in Maple Grove cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8 pm at the funeral home.

Charles Glenn Kirchner
July 28, 1920 - July 10, 2004
Charles Glenn Kirchner, 83 died 12:45 a.m. July 10, 2004 at Terre Haute Regional Hospital following a brief illness. On May 14, 1945 he was united in marriage to Ruby Opay Jeffers also of Clay County who preceded him in death March 26, 1988. Born July 28, 1920 in Clay County, the son of Charles and Lillian Kirchner who preceded him in death. Also preceded in death by a brother Sam, a nephew Sammy David and a niece Melissa. He was a member of the Methodist Church. Glenn served in the US Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion. He was employed by Big Ben Coal Company from 1938 till 1950. His lifelong passion was buying and selling parcels of real estate, animals and all other farm related items. March, 1945 he and his wife Ruby purchased the Redenbarger Homestead in Posey Township, Clay County and during his lifetime added several other properties to this homestead. In 1976 he entered into a business relationship of 28 years with Dave Jacob and family, over the years this evolved into a partnership with Dave and sons, Jim and John with the farming and livestock operation until Glenn's death and beyond. Survivors include: sisters, Ilagene and Bud McCammon, Terre Haute, Charlotte and Dude Baker, Brazil and Nancy Selsam, Terre Haute and brother William (Bill) and Pat Kirchner, Sister-in-law Martha Kirchner, several nieces and nephews, also special friends and long time business associates, Dave and Becky, Jim and John Jacob.
Services will be 1:00 pm, Tuesday at The French Funeral Home, with Revs. Myron James and Max Brunton officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 8 pm on Monday and one hour before services on Tuesday. Burial will follow at the Mount Calvary (Van Cleave) Church cemetery.
Donations may be made to the Mount Calvary (Van Cleave) Church.
