Max W. Shaffer
January 23, 1936 - July 30, 2004
Max W. Shaffer, 68, of Terre Haute, died quietly at home surrounded by family on Friday, July 30, 2004.
Max was born January 23, 1936 to Doris and Wayne Shaffer. He served his country in the Army during the occupation of Germany following World War II. Following his military service, he worked at CBS records for over 10 years. He later joined the Teamsters Local and retired from ABF transport after 25 years of service.
Max was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and baseball enthusiast who coached a semi-professional baseball team the " Staunton All-Stars " for over 10 years in the 1960's. He also enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting and watching Nascar racing.
His is survived by his three daughters, Noell and Timothy Lenardo, Terre Haute, Abagail Shaffer and James Hoke, Loami, Il and Holly Shaffer and Charles Schmadeke of Springfield, Il; five siblings Garry Shaffer, Cloverdale, Phyllis and Robert Shaffer, Brazil, Susan and Charles " Chuck " Shaffer, Brazil, Mary Joan and David Brown, Terre Haute, Marsha Kay Shaffer, Idaho Falls, Idaho. Max's grandchildren include: Evan, Matthew, Audrey and Zachary Lenardo and several neices and nephews.
We will celebrate his life on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2004 from 2 to 4 pm at French Funeral Home in Brazil, IN.
During the final weeks of his life, Max spoke fondly of his memories of coaching and playing alongside his friend Roy Brann. He wanted to rekindle his participation in the game as a coach despite his ailing health. In memory of his love for the game, his family requests that in-lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Brazil City Park Board, c/o Roseanne Jefferies, 714 W. Church St, Brazil, IN 47834. The donations will be used for the restoration of the Roy Brann Stadium in Brazil, IN.
Natalie Jo Lowdermilk
January 30, 1989 - July 27, 2004
Natalie Jo Lowdermilk, 15, of Center Point, passed away Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at her home.
She was born January 30, 1989 to Darrell and Cindy Burns Lowdermilk.
She was a student at Clay City High School where she was active in volleyball, softball, basketball, pep club, and Girls Athletic Association. Natalie also was a member of the Pioneer Happy Hustlers 4-H Club. She won numerous 4-H awards including 2003 Grand Champion Steer. She was a member of Youth for Christ and Bible Club. She was a member of the Clay City First United Methodist Church and was active in their youth group. She loved playing Nintendo, was a genuine animal lover and loved spending time with her friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Darrell, who died on June 18, 1993 and her grandparents Gerald Lowdermilk and Kenneth & Dorothy Burns.
Survivors include her mother, Cindy, a brother Troy; a sister Emily; grandmother, Elenora Lowdermilk; aunts & uncles, Richard & Jeanette Steiner, Clay City; Mike & Becky Royer, Brazil; Mike & Dee Targett, Clay City; Tom & Marsha West, Poland; Wayne & Marilyn Burns, Brazil; Lloyd & Mary Burns, Center Point; and Mark & Rita Dierdorff, Brazil; and many friends and extended family.
Funeral services will be Sunday, August 1, 2004 at 3:00 PM at Miller Memorial Chapel with the Rev. John Like officiating. Burial will be in Van Cleve cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday, July 31, 2004 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to The Riley Children's Hospital, The 4-H Scholarship Fund or to The Natalie Lowdermilk Athletic Scholarship Fund at Riddell National Bank in care of Anita James in the Trust Department. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Jack Head
October 02, 1932 - July 28, 2004
Jack Head, 71, of Brazil passed away Wednesday, July 28, 2004 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute.
He was born October 2, 1932 to Ollie and Mary Brown Head. He was a cook in the navy during the Korean War and later worked as a welder at JI Case. He attended Center Point United Methodist Church and was a member of the Masonic Lodge 597 in Center Point.
He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, both of his parents and two sisters, Evelyn Moore and Agnes Archer.
Survivors include his daughters Becky and husband Tony Morris, Brazil; Evelyn and husband Leroy Sutton, Ashboro; Jackie Head, Brazil; one brother Bill Head, Lakeland, Florida; sisters, Hazel Lynch, Reelsville; Lydia Holt, Terre Haute; two grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband Kasey Terrell, Center Point and Kaitlyn Morris, Brazil; three great grandchildren, Nakisha, Ayssia and Dakota Cass, Center Point and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be Saturday, July 31, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at Center Point United Methodist Church. Visitation will be prior to services from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
At his request cremation will take place will burial at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to Center Point United Methodist Church Building Fund. Envelopes will be available at the church.
Mae M. Archer
November 15, 1925 - July 15, 2003
Mae M. Archer, 77 of Terre Haute, died July 15, 2003 at Southwood Healthcare Facility at 6:00pm.
She was born November 15, 1925 in Bedford, IN. the daughter of Henry and Annis Chambers Reuben. She was raised in Brazil, graduated from Brazil High School, Class of 1943.
She married
John Archer, November 23, 1943, he survives.
She was a member of Home Ec Club in Terre Haute, and enjoyed working in her vegatable garden, canning and fishing. She was devoted to her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, John Archer of Terre Haute; two sons and two daughters; John David Archer, Linda Kay Hallmark, and Curtis Ray Archer all of Terre Haute, and Janet Marie Hallmark of Beecher City, Il.; 6 grandchildren, Helen Marie Stadler, David Archer, Derek Archer, Blaine Hallmark, Christie Hallmark, and Shannon Hallmark; 3 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, James Davis, and Bill Davis.
Services will be held Friday, July 18, 2003 at 1:00pm at French Funeral Home with Pastor Tony Alstott officiating. Music selections will be provided by Steve McCullough. Burial will follow at Bee Ridge cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to services.
Gladys M. Sutherlin
September 07, 1913 - October 12, 2004
Gladys M. Sutherlin, 91, Terre Haute, formerly of Plainfield and Brownsburg, died at 3:15 a.m., Tuesday, October 12, at Harborside Healthcare in Terre Haute where she had been a resident-patient for over four years.
She was born in Hendricks County, IN, on September 7, 1913, a daughter of Robert and Iva Kemp Barnes.
For 26 years she had been employed in the parts department of General Motors Corporation, Indianapolis. She retired on October 1, 1978.
She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church in Terre Haute and was a former member of Faith Baptist Church in Avon.
Her husband, Ira D. Sutherlin, died in 1952. Also preceding were a son-in-law, Robert Wilson, a grandson Robert Wilson, Jr., and seven brothers and sisters.
Surviving are her daughter, Patricia Wilson, Terre Haute; two sisters, Hazel Becktel and Martha Silliman, both of Plainfield; two brothers, John Barnes, Belleville, and Kenneth Barnes, Plainfield; five grandchildren, James D. Wilson, Michael Perry, Karla Buis, Starla Wilson, and Peter Wilson; 11 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday in Miller Memorial Chapel with Pastor Warren Brokering officiating. Visitation is from 4:00 p.m. Thursday until the services. Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday in Forest Hill cemetery, Greencastle.
Jack Harden
September 16, 1942 - October 11, 2004
Jack Harden, 62 of Brazil died unexpectedly October 11, 2004 in the emergency room of St. Vincent Clay Hospital.
He was born September 16, 1942 in Clay County the son of Frank Harden and Ethel Miller Harden. He graduated from Brazil High School Class of 1962. While in high school, he was a member of a cross-country team that set a record for most consecutive wins.
After high school, he served in the Air Force from 1963- 1969. He later served in the Navy serving two tours in Viet Nam. He was a crew chief in jet engine maintenance. He served a total of 23 years in the military. He married
Teresa Scharf Albright on September 2, 1989. He worked for the Brazil Housing Authority then later worked for the YMCA. He also enjoyed golfing and worked as a park ranger at Forest Park Golf Course for sometime. He was an active member of Christ Community Church. He was a devoted Christian who loved his church and his family.
He is survived by his wife Teresa; sons, Brian Albright of Brazil and Brady Albright of Indianapolis; five special young ladies; granddaughter Quinn Albright, nieces Brittany and Brooke Greenwood, Baylee Keyt, and foster daughter Chelsea Casey; his twin sister Jacquelyn Evans and husband Jerry, sisters Shirley Roeschlein, and Darlene Webb and husband Jim; brother Jerry Harden and wife Janet; sister in law, Donna Harden; mother and father in law, Bill and Betty Scharf; sisters in law, Tammy Greenwood and husband Chris, and Teena Keyt; other nieces and nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one stepson, Brynn Albright; and a brother Bill Harden.
Services will be held Friday at 1:00pm at French Funeral Home with Pastor Tim Russell officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4-8pm at again Friday prior to services.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the House of Hope or to Christ Community Church Building Fund. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Glen L. Behrman
Glen L. Behrman, 86, of Columbus, passed away at his residence on October 20, 2008.
Mr. Behrman was born in Bartholomew County, on November 19, 1921 the son of Walter and Ethel (Huntsman) Behrman.
He was serving in the US Navy during WWII, when on April 27, 1942, in Norfolk VA, he married
Mildred (Horman) Behrman, who survives.
Glen was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he was a former Elder. He retired from Reliance Electric in 1983, which was formerly Reeves Pulley in Columbus. He had a great faith in Christ. He loved his family and friends and enjoyed fishing.
Besides his wife, Mildred, he is survived by his children; Jim (Linda) Behrman, Dale (Wilma) Behrman, Lou Ann (Dan) Hoevener, Linda (Everett) Newkirk, Lori (David) Koeberlein, grandchildren; Jamie (Charity) Behrman, Tim (Christy) Hoevener, Jon (Tammy) Behrman, Barrett Newkirk, Chuck (Kirstie) Newkirk, Mike Hoevener, Matt Koeberlein, Ed Koeberlein, Angie (Jeff) Otte, Sara Newkirk, Beth Koeberlein, great grandchildren; Jessica Hoevener, Abigail Hoevener, Kourtney Otte, Katherine Otte, Harlan Behrman, Oscar Behrman, Harrison Behrman, sisters; Evelyn (Ray) Otte, JoAnn (Wayne) Scheidt.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, brothers; Norman Behrman, Elmer Behrman, Eugene Behrman, and great granddaughter; Erika Otte.
Services will be at St. John's Lutheran Church, Thursday, October 23, 2008, at 10:30 AM, with Rev. Joshua Cook officiating.
Burial will be at St. John's Lutheran cemetery, White Creek.
Friends may call at Voss Chapel, Seymour, on Wednesday, from 4:00-8:00 PM and at the church on Thursday, from 9:30 AM until time of service.
Memorials may be written to the St. John's Beautification Committee, St. John's Lutheran School or Donor's Choice.
Ethel L. Nevins
September 25, 1913 - October 11, 2004
Ethel L. Nevins, 91, Brazil, died at 8:24 p.m. Monday, October 11, at the Clay Health Center were she had been living for over two years.
She was born in southern Clay County on september 25, 1913. Her parents were Charles and Effie Ellis Horton, and she was a graduate of Clay City High School.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Brazil and had resided here most of her life.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Daniel Earl Nevins, in December 1991.
Surviving are two sons, Charles Nevins, and his wife Carolyn, Terre Haute, and David Nevins, Brazil; one daughter, Carolyn Carrone, New Orleans; one brother, John Horton, Coal City; three sisters, Agnes Sinders and Juanita Shonk, both of Clay City, and Iva Hubble, Jasonville; 13 grandchildren, Kathryn, Anna, Danny, Summer, Stacy and Charlie Nevins, Jennifer Stinson; Daniel P. and Michael Carrone, James Cass, Amy Heading, Derek and Patty Nevins; 13 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in Miller Memorial Chapel. Rev. Robert Sampson will officiate, and burial will be in the Sink cemetery south of Clay City. Visitation is from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday.
Samuel Lester Hugg
March 28, 1926 - October 14, 2004
Samuel Lester “Les” Hugg, 78 of Brazil died October 14, 2004 at 3:23pm at Harborside Healthcare Facility. He had been in failing health since May.
He was born March 28, 1926 in Ridgefarm, IL. The son of Carl E. Hugg and Daisy Deeter Hugg. He attended school in Cory before leaving to serve in the U.S. Army. He served in both the Army and the Air Force for five years. He was stationed in the South Pacific during WW II.
He was a member of the Staunton Christian Church. He was a member and Past Master two times of the Centerpoint Masonic Lodge #597; at 32 Degree Mason, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, and American Legion Post #2.
As a young man, following the service, he worked at Allis Chalmers in Terre Haute. He later worked for Mace Petroleum and retired from Amax Coal Company. He also built several homes in Clay County, including log homes. He enjoyed living on the water, and watching the geese fly. He was well known as a good and kind man.
He is survived by his wife R. Delores Clark Hugg; their daughter Cheri Brink of Brazil; two grandsons, Richard Brink of New York, and Jason Brink of Brazil; one sister Betty Weddle and husband Tom of Brazil; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
His parents preceded him in death.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11:00am at French Funeral Home with Rev. Ernie Rush officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4-8pm with Masonic Services at 7:00pm. American Legion Post #2 and VFW #1127 will provide military graveside services.
Leland Max Zurcher
July 25, 1927 - October 06, 2004
Leland Max Zurcher, 77, of Clay City died October 6, 2004 at Holly Hills Health Care Facility.
He was born July 25, 1927 in Clay City the son of Peter and Verna Thomas Zurcher.
He was known as a hard worker and for his farming. He operated a farm with his son Jan and was a member of Farm Bureau and the Clay City First United Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son Terry Lee Zurcher.
He is survived by his wife Marjorie Collenbaugh Zurcher; a son, Jan Zurcher of Clay City; two sister, Laurena Tiefel of Clay City and Joann Zurcher of Riley; two granchildren, Valire Zurcher and Sam Zurcher; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 9, 2004 at 2:00 pm at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home in Clay City. Burial will be in St. Peters cemetery. Visitation will be Friday from 4-8 pm and prior to services on Saturday.
