Stephen R. Gieseking
August 22, 1950 - July 16, 2004
Stephen R. Gieseking, 53, Brazil, died at 2:40 p.m. Friday, July 16, at his home following an extended illness.
He had been a security guard 21 years for the Indiana Department of Corrections at the Putnamville Institution until becoming disabled in 2003 by poor health.
Born in Brazil on August 22, 1950, his parents were Wilbur R. Gieseking and Zetta L. Vanatti Gieseking. He was a 1968 graduate of Brazil High School and a life-long resident of the community. He also attended ISU for two years.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Nancy Gieseking.
Surviving are his wife, Judith M. "Judy" Gieseking, whom he married
October 23, 1992; two brothers Theodore Gieseking, and wife Clementine, Indianapolis; and Howard Gieseking, Brazil; a sister-in-law, Peggy Gieseking, Brazil; many nieces and nephews including Eric, Robert, Jessie, and Terra Gieseking, all of Brazil; Tina Kunstek, in Florida, Tad and Teddy Gieseking, and Tonya Gattone, all of Indianapolis; several aunts and uncles; and special friends, Neva Pefley and family, Reelsville; Joe and Joyce Payne and their family, Brazil.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday in Miller Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jack Dunbar officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar cemetery south of Brazil.
Visitation is from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m Monday. Officers from the Indiana Department of Corrections, Putnamville facility, will provide an honor guard during the visitation and funeral.
Larry Phillip McKenzie
April 16, 1943 - July 22, 2004
Larry Phillip McKenzie, 61 of Staunton, died at 3:10 a.m. Thursday, July 22, at Terre Haute Regional Hospital.
Born in Clay County on April 16, 1943, his parent were Robert McKenzie and Selma Hyde McKenzie.
His parents and two brothers, Orin Beddow and Leo McKenzie preceded him in death.
Surviving are his wife, Kathryn McKenzie; a son, Larry Phillip McKenzie II and wife Vivian of Staunton; and step-son, Darryl Danforth of Mississippi; one daughter, Michelle and husband Gregg Chandler of Spencer, IN; two step-daughters, Becky Doyle of Brazil and Christy and husband Jeff Harlan of South Carolina; two brothers, Gerald McKenzie of Terre Haute; and Robert McKenzie Jr. and wife Bethel of Aurora CO; two sisters, Marcella Reagin of Staunton; and Marilyn and husband Jack Harrison of Staunton; 5 grandchildren, Garrett and Wyatt McKenzie of Staunton; Robert McKenzie, Toby and Malishia Chandler of Spencer; and 4 step grandchildren, Cole and Justine Doyle of Brazil; Neil Harlan of South Carolina; and Dustin Danforth of Mississippi.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Miller Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James Gibson officiating. Burial will follow at Bee Ridge cemetery in Brazil.
Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to be made to the American Heart Association. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Wayne L. Modesitt
August 23, 1936 - July 20, 2004
Wayne L. Modesitt, 67 of Cory died July 20, 2004 at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis from complications from leukemia. He was born August 23, 1936 in Cory, the son of Ernest and Frances Hull Modesitt. He graduated from Cory High School, Class of 1954.
January 28, 1956 he married
Barbara Edwards Modesitt, she survives.
He retired from Amax Coal/ Kindell Coal Company, Minnehawhaw Mine, he served in many capacities while at the mine and last worked as a heavy equipment operator.
He was an active member of the Cory Zion United Methodist Church, and enjoyed teaching Sunday school there. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #390 in Riley; the Scottish Rite, Valley of Terre Haute; the Zorah Shrine and was Past Master of the #390 Lodge.
He was a member of the United Mine Workers, and served as Past President. He also was a life-long farmer. He enjoyed fishing, and hunting, especially in the Western states and in Alaska. He and his family also enjoyed camping in their recreational vehicle. His hobbies also included working in the garden, woodworking, and welding crafts. He also was the loving owner of “Lucky”.
He is survived by his mother Frances Modesitt of Riley; his wife Barbara Modesitt of Cory; two sons, Rick Modesitt and wife Kathy of Terre Haute, and Phil Modesitt and wife Martha Ann of Lubbock, TX; one daughter “Tam” Ray and husband Doug of Terre Haute; 7 grandchildren, Taryn Ray and Tiffany Ray, Louann Modesitt, J.R. Modesitt, Brooks, Modesitt, Peyton Modesitt, and Macrae Modesitt; one brother Alvin Modesitt and wife Barbara of Cory; two sisters Wanda Hilton or Riley, and Elaine Collins and husband Ray of Terre Haute; several nieces and nephews and extended family.
Services will be held Saturday at 11:00am at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home with Rev. Anthony Ferriell officicating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill cemetery in Riley. Visitation will be Friday from 4-8pm and again Saturday prior to services.
Masonic Services will be held Friday at 7:00 pm
The family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society or to Aplastic Anemia and MDS Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
David Allen Augustus

David Allen Augustus, 42, of San Marcos, CA and formerly of Riley, IN died Monday, July 19, 2004 at his residence.
He was born December 8, 1961 in Terre Haute to Walter Edgar Augustus and Barbara (Fox) Augustus.
He was employed for 14 years with North County Transit District as a diesel mechanic. He served 9 years in the United State Marine Corps from 1980-1989. He was a graduate of Terre Haute South Vigo High School Class of 1980.
He enjoyed deep sea fishing and spending time with his dogs.
He was preceded in death by his father,
He is survived by his mother, Barbara Augustus of Clay City; one brother Jim August and wife Kathy of Terre Haute; five sisters, Nancy Pengra and husband Mark of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Carolyn Pettet and husband Ron of Terre Haute, IN, Linda Catt and husband Ron of Coal City, IN, Jane Schafer and husband Marion of Brazil, IN, and Janet Orman and husband Ray of Shelburn, IN; several nieces and nephews and his faithful pets, Typpur and Kruezre.
Services will be Tuesday at 11:00 am at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home in Clay City, IN with Brother Scott Wiley officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
Bobby Gene Eveland
September 30, 1959 - July 20, 2004
Bobby Eveland, 44, of Brazil died unexpectedly July 20, 2004 at St. Vincent Clay Hospital.
He was born September 31, 1959 the son of Bobby Gene Eveland and Bertha Mae Kohler Eveland.
He was preceded in death by his Father Bobby Gene Sr. and Brother Andy Eveland.
His is survived by his mother Bertha Pollard of Brazil; his long time companion, Sonya Whitehead; one son, James Whitehead; two daughters, Melissa Whitehead and Jessica Whitehead; three sisters, Margaret Lalen and husband Cliff of Brazil, Rhonda Carrico and husband Ray of Piketon, OH, and Linda Francis and husband Dan of Piketon, OH; former brother-in-law, Roger Gayhart; one granddaughter, Calie Whitehead; several nieces and nephews and extended family.
Funeral services will be Saturday at 1:00 pm at French Funeral Home with Brother Carl Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Bee Ridge cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 until time of service.

Mabel E. Knight
June 29, 1908 - July 20, 2004
Mable E. Shidler Knight, 96, of Long Beach, CA formerly of Clay City and Indianapolis died July 20, 2004 at 5:10 am at Atlantic Memorial Health Care. She was born on June 29, 1908 in Clay City, IN, the daughter of William Shidler and Novella Swalley Shidler.
Formerly of Clay City, she moved to Indianapolis and lived there several years prior to moving to Long Beach in 1993. She married
John R. Knight in 1928 who preceded her in death in 1965. She was a member of the United Brethern Church in Lewis, IN.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband; 2 brothers, Belden Shidler and Merle Shidler; one sister, Lucille Trueblood.
She is survived by her 3 daughters, Norma Novella Emberton and Patricia Fitzpatrick, both of Long Beach, CA, and Joan Minerva of Ft. Lauderdale, FL.; 1 sister, Virgina June Schneider of St. Petersburg, Florida; 5 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be Monday at 2:00 pm at Schoppenhorst Funeral Home in Clay City with burial following at Maple Grove cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday afternoon from 1-4 pm and Monday until time of services.
Mrs. Gertrude Walker
Mrs. Gertrude Walker, 85, Scottsburg, passed away at 8:30 PM, Friday, November 14th, 2008 at her residence.
Gertrude was born in Hayden, Indiana on January 14, 1923 the daughter of John E. and Lillian (Hamilton) Donnells. She lived most of her life in Jackson and Scott Counties. She was a Homemaker and a member of United Methodist Church in Underwood, IN
On March 9, 1946 she married
Murrel H. Walker in Seymour. He passed away on May 26, 2002 in Seymour.
Gertrude is survived by her brother John Donnells and several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews .
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, brothers: Raymond R. Donnells, Leroy Donnells, three sisters Marie Britton, Irene Croucher, and Florence Sullivan
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday Nov. 18 at 1:30 pm at Voss Chapel with Pastor Mike Seany officiating.
Burial will be at Riverview cemetery.
Friends may call at Voss Chapel on Tuesday after 11:00 AM until time of service.

Florence R. Currie
March 25, 1913 - July 22, 2004
Florence R. Currie, 91, died Thursday, July 22 at St. Francis Hospital in Beech Grove. Florence was born March 25, 1913 to John J. and Mahala Tribble Steuerwald. She was a 1931 graduate of Brazil High School, and a 1935 graduate of Indiana State University. She earned her Masters degree from Butler University. In 1939 she married
Stanley F. Currie of Harmony, IN. He preceded her in death in 1969.
She taught school at Valparaiso, Brownsburg, and Burkhart schools in Indianapolis, retiring in 1981 after teaching for 34 years in the Indiana school systems. She also volunteered at Methodist Hospital for over 30 years. Florence was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.
She will be missed by her son David T. Currie, her grandsons John and Mark, and her daughter-in-law Kathleen Haley of Tiburon, California. She is also survived by her brother Mac F. Steuerwald of Knightsville, her sister Francis Hamilton of Brazil, a niece Sharon Honn of Frankfort, and nephews Tom Cook of Petalums, California and John A. Hamilton of Arlington Heights, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by a sister Nian Mary Cook.
Graveside memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004 at Summit Lawn cemetery with the Rev. Ernie Rush officiating.

Larry Wayne McDonald
June 20, 1947 - July 23, 2004
Larry W. McDonald, 57, of Rockville and formerly of Brazil passed away Friday, July 23, 2004 in the Lee Allan Bryant Nursing Home. He was born June 20, 1947 in Brazil to Charles E. and Virginia E. Geilhart McDonald. He was a Staff Sgt in the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam where he received the Army Commendation Medal with V device; Good Conduct Medal bronze clasp with two loops; Vietnam Service Medal; Republic of Vietanm Campaign Medal with device 1960; Combat Infantryman Badge and was a Sharpshooter (M-16 Rifle). Mr. McDonald was a member of the Christ Community Church, a life member of the Brazil American Legion and VFW, the Rockville American Vets, the Brazil Moose and Eagles and Masonic Lodge #541, F and AM. His parents and a brother, James E. McDonald preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter, Penny Nevins of Brazil; brother, Bill McDonald and wife Joyce of Brazil; 3 granddaughters, Virginia and Mary Raab of Brazil and Bobbi Raab of Terre Haute; Aunts and Uncles, Wayne and Evelyn Parkins of Brazil, Irene McDonald of Brazil and Fred and Dorothe Geilhart of Arlington, Texas; and Jackie McDonald, sister-in-law and a large extended family.
Services will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 28, 2004 in the Miller Memorial Chapel with visitation Tuesday, July 27, 2004 from 5-8 p.m. Burial will be in Summit Lawn cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Brazil VFW or American Legion. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Glen Janice McCullough

Glen Janice McCullough, 83, of Center Point died July 26, 2004 at 12:30 pm at Harborside Healthcare Facility in Terre Haute.
She was born December 30, 1920 in Vigo County the daughter of James E. Thomas and Glen Barnhart Thomas.
She was a member of the Saline City Church, Shamrock Home-Ec Club, Saline City Ladies Aid. She enjoyed cooking, flower gardening, knitting and spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister Grace Knox; two brothers, Charles Thomas and R.J. “Pat” Thomas.
She is survived by her husband Earl D. McCullough; two sons and daughter in laws, Robert and Barbara McCullough of Jasper and James and Maxine McCullough of Center Point; four grandchildren, Angie Malone and husband Mike, Jamie McCullough, Rachel McCullough, and Robert McCullough; four great-grandchildren, Taylor Pickett, Tristen Malone, Devon Malone, and Austin McCullough; one sister, Rhoda Roeschlein; several nieces, nephews and extended family.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 am at French Funeral Home with Revs. Tom Roeschlein and Chester Hapenny officiating. Burial will follow in Ashboro cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 5 to 7 pm at the funeral home.

Reseda Y. (Rae) Moon
April 23, 1917 - August 01, 2004
Reseda Y. “Rae” Moon, 87 of Brazil passed away August 1, 2004 in the presence of her family at Bethesda Gardens in Terre Haute.
She was born April 23, 1917 in Port Edwards, Wisconsin. The daughter of William Yusten and Mary Drummer Yusten.
She graduated from Luther Hospital School of Nursing in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. She later worked at Cook County Hospital in Chicago were she met and married
Dr. Charles E. Moon.
Dr. and Mrs. Moon relocated to the Center Point and Brazil area where he established his medical practice.
She was a member of the Brazil Women’s Golf Association, Tri Kappa, and the First Presbyterian Church Women’s Circle.
Rae was a very talented and creative lady. She mastered the art of stained glass, hand quilting, and sewing. She was well known for her Halloween costumes and sewing talent.
She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn J. Howerton of Terre Haute, two sons, Mark A.Moon and his wife Nancy of Jupiter, FL, and Michael C. Moon and his wife Kathy of Ft. Stuart, FL; 9 grandchildren, Jeffrey Howerton, Debbie Howerton, Travis Moon, Garrett Moon, Peyton Moon, Charles Moon, Christin Moon, Cody Moon, Michelle Reed; 4 great-grandchildren, Josh Howerton, Matthew Howerton, Emma Reed and Mark Reed; she is also survived by other extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, several siblings, and her husband Dr. Charles E. Moon.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 1:00pm at Center Point cemetery.
