Julian and his wife, Evelyn, moved to Bloomington, Indiana, in 1987, following their retirement, he as an architect in private practice in Westfield, New Jersey, and she as financial assistant to the Dean of the School of Education at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

After working for a major architectural firm in New York City, Julian settled into private practice in Westfield. He was an active fellow of the American Institute of Architects and served as chairman of the New Jersey Committee on Building Laws and Regulations.
