Wayne Francis Harris
May 23, 1935 - August 05, 2009
Wayne Francis Harris, 74, of Nineveh, died at 10:08 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
Mr. Harris retired from Arvin Industries where he was a printer. He attended Columbus Free Methodist Church, was a veteran of the Indiana National Guard and enjoyed gardening.
Born in Columbus May 23, 1935, Mr. Harris was the son of Everett “Mike” and Emma Leslie Harris.
He is survived by a sister, Barbara (James) Whipker of Nashville; nieces and nephews, Roger Harris of Michigan, Jana Harris of Florida, William Harris of California, Michael Harris of California, Regina McDonald of Nineveh, Rhonda Butler of Dubai, UAE, Renea Lawson of Nevada and Ray Whipker of Brown County; and 16 great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Wilbur and James Harris.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 11 a.m. Friday at Columbus Free Methodist Church, 1511 22nd St. with the Rev. Lane Loman officiating.
INURNMENT: Garland Brook cemetery at a later date.

E. Louis Schuette
January 06, 1921 - August 11, 2009
E. Louis Schuette, 88, of Central Avenue died at 9:36 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
Mr. Schuette was a graduate of St. Peter’s Lutheran School and a graduate of Columbus High School. He was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
His first place of employment was Vorwald’s Grocery Store in downtown Columbus. In April of 1946 he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Coast Guard.
Being entrepreneurs, he and his wife opened Schuette’s Laundry in Columbus, which was the first self-service laundry east of the Mississippi River. He became a fixture at the Bartholomew County 4-H Fair and other community events selling cotton candy and snow cones for over 50 years.
In 1961 Mr. Schuette began working for the Indiana State Highway Department. Following eight years there, he worked for Ashland Oil Company in the Permit Department until his retirement.
He was very active in local and state politics through much of his life and served on the Bartholomew County Council. He was a member of St. Peter’s Couples Club and the American Legion.
Mr. Schuette became very adventurous in his later years, enjoying parasailing, a hot air balloon ride, an ultra-lite flight, riding on a Harley motorcycle, and riding in an Indy car. He also enjoyed watching Indy car races and was a huge NASCAR and Tony Stewart fan.
Born in Columbus Jan. 6, 1921, Mr. Schuette was the son of Christian W. and Emily May Shireman Schuette. He married
Norma Jean Vorwald Dec. 27, 1942. She preceded him in death Nov. 25, 2006.
Survivors include sons, Donald (Marcia) Schuette of Green Pond, S.C., and Roger (Julie) Schuette of Columbus; daughters, Carolyn Schuette of Milwaukee, Wis., Dianne (Ron) Shepherd-Hargraves of Columbus; a sister, Cornelia Cunningham of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Shannon Ray (Christina) Schuette, Tim Schuette, Tony (Kim) Schuette, Rodney (Jenny) Schuette, Damian (Vanessa) Shepherd, Chad (Nikki) Schuette, Joshua (Stephanie) Shepherd and Scott (Kelly Diekhoff) Schuette; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a great-granddaughter, Anna Mae Schuette; and a brother, Frank Schuette.
Calling: Will be Sunday, August 16, 2009, from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home.
FUNERAL: Will be Monday, August 17, 2009, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church with calling one hour prior to service time at the church.
BURIAL: Will be in Garland Brook cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Care Ministries or to Never Too Late Foundation, 8538 Tidewater Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46236.
Robert H. Clark
January 23, 1931 - September 30, 2009
Robert Henry Clark was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on January 23, 1931, the son of Ivan J. and Flossie Gossman-Head Clark. He married
Marilyn J. Hoppes-Halford on March 3, 1973.
He is survived by a son, Jeffery L. (Debra) Clark of Ham Lake, Minnesota; step-daughters, Dana J. (Dave) McKean of Shelbyville, Elaine L. (Gary) Herbert of Columbus, Indiana, and Lisa J. Parker of North Vernon, Indiana; a half sister, Betty L. Whittemore of California; and also a half brother, Karl Head of Franklin, Indiana.
Robert was reared in the Scipio, Indiana, area. He attended school through the first semester of his sophomore year at Scipio School then transferred to North Vernon High School where he graduated.
Robert was employed by Quality Mill Supply Company upon graduation. In the years following he was a member of the United States Air Force for four years and also worked for various other firms, finally retiring from Quality Mill Supply Company in 1995.
In his early years Robert was a member of Boy Scouts of America. He had been a member of the American Society of Tool and Manufacturing Engineers and was a member of East Columbus Christian Church.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and two half sisters.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: Will be held Saturday, October 3, 2009, at 1 p.m. at North Vernon First Christian Church by the Revs. Ron Bridgewater and Gilbert Schreiber.
BURIAL: Private burial services for the family will be held at Vernon cemetery in Vernon, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Lung Association.
Helen D. Thompson
June 08, 1915 - February 23, 2008
Helen D. Thompson, 92, of Taylor Road, Columbus, Ind., died Saturday, February 23, 2008, at 6:15 a.m. at Four Seasons Healthcare Center.
Helen enjoyed making quilts by hand, as well as gardening, sharing her produce with her friends and neighbors. She retired from Arvin after 30 years of service. Helen attended the East Columbus United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Thompson was born June 8, 1915, in Jennings County, Indiana, the daughter of Lon and Floney Harrell Hern. She married
Orvie Raymond Thompson. He preceded her in death on August 23, 1980.
Survivors include a nephew, Thomas J. (Rhonda) Hern of Columbus, Ind.; nieces, Jane (John) Hern Naf of Ocala, Fla. and Deborah H. (David) Sharp of Columbus, Ind.; a cousin, Rheadawn (Harry Lee) Thomas of Indiana; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Harrell Hern, Herbert Hern who passed away as a child, Carl Hern and Robert W. Hern.
FUNERAL: Wednesday, February 27, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Agnew officiating.
VISITATION: Wednesday, February 27, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services.
BURIAL: Bear Creek Baptist cemetery.

Carolyn A. Cruz

Carolyn A. Cruz, 72, of Lantern Lane died at 6:19 A.M. Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at Columbus Regional Hospital. Mrs. Cruz is survived by her husband, Jose C. Cruz; sons, Mark Curry of Washington, D.C., James Curry of Indianapolis and Eric Cruz of Detroit, Mich.; daughters, Denis Shafer of North Vernon and Laura Stolicki and Maria Priemer, both of Michigan; one brother; three sisters; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: Will be at 11:30 A.M. Saturday January 9, 2007 at Firt Baptist Church with the Rev. Jon Carlstrom officiating.
VISITATION: Will be from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. on Saturday January 9, 2007 at the church.

Woodrow Raymond "Woody" Glasson
March 28, 1917 - July 11, 2006
Woodrow Raymond “Woody” Glasson, 89, of 27th Street died at 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at his home.
Mr. Glasson was a former resident of Indianapolis but lived most of his life in Columbus. He was a graduate of Columbus High School and 10 years of correspondence schools.
He served with the Navy aboard the USS President Hayes during World War II and was part of the first offensive landing at Guadalcanal. He was recommended to a commission known as a Mustang officer, LT. JG. USN, and wrote and published a book, “Attack Transport" WWII in the Pacific.
He worked in engineering design and application with Reeves Pulley Co. for 45 years, was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and was proud that his genealogy showed he was a descendant of Benjamin Franklin.
Born in Seymour March 28, 1917, Mr. Glasson was the son of Raymond and Vivian Margaret Kennedy Glasson. He married
M. Jean Miller July 15, 1944.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Donna Jean (John) Fasick of Columbus; grandchildren, Mark S. McClintic of Columbus, Michelle (Lou) Calcagni of Rhode Island and John (Laura) Fasick III of New York; great-grandchildren, Eric S. McClintic and Milena G. Calcagni; a sister, Josephine Cox of Columbus; and extended family, Tammy (Tracy) Meek, Teah and Ryan Meek, and Alex (John Fasick III) of New York.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepmother, Marian Glasson.
FUNERAL: A private graveside military service conducted by the Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard is planned at Garland Brook cemetery, with the Rev. Richard Yeaton officiating.

Charles M. England
January 18, 1925 - June 20, 2007
Charles M. England, 82, of Clover Court died at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2007, at his home.
Mr. England was a veteran of the Navy and retired from Golden Foundry after 32 years of service. He was a member of Lowell General Baptist Church and enjoyed talking to his pet bird, “Buddy, ” feeding squirrels and collecting pocket knives.
Born in Barren County, Ky., Jan. 18, 1925, Mr. England was the son of Calvin and Annie England. He married
Dorothy L. Jessie Aug. 14, 1943.
Survivors include his wife; sons, Don (Ann) England of Florida and Randall W. Jessie of Columbus; daughters, Joyce (Dallas) Spencer and Gail (Marvin) Root, both of Columbus; 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Wayne England Sr.; a daughter, Peggy Sue Rogers; brothers, Russel, James and J.T. England; sisters, Kizzie Mercer and Laura Jessie; one granddaughter; and two great-grandson.
FUNERAL: 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 25, 2007 at Lowell General Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Poynter officiating.
VISITATION: 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Jewell-Rittman Family Funeral Home and from 9:30 a.m. until service time Monday at the church.
BURIAL: Old Union cemetery and military graveside rites will be conducted by Bartholomew County Veterans Color Guard.
