Berta Lue Maughmer
July 11, 1930 - February 12, 2012

Berta Lue Maughmer, 81, Walton, died at 3:26 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, 2012, at St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.

Born July 11, 1930, in Cass County, she was the daughter of C. Wayne Shirley and Dorothy Mae Kerlin. She was married May 16, 1948, in Walton, to Bob Maughmer, who survives.

She was a homemaker.

A 1948 graduate of Walton High School, Lue loved to sew, knit, quilt, crochet, tat, wood burn, press dried flowers and make jewelry. She was a member and former president of the Cass County Quilters Club.

Surviving are her husband, Robert “Bob” Maughmer, Walton; son, Tony Maughmer and wife, Kathy, West Lafayette; daughter, Jan Connolly and husband, Kevin, Beloit, Wis.; and grandsons, Nicolas Maughmer, West Lafayette, and Jason Maguire, New Jersey.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Sue Bourff.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Gundrum Funeral Home.

Friends may call one hour prior the services Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.

Wayne A. Hines
November 10, 1926 - February 14, 2012

Wayne A. Hines, 85, of Logansport, passed away at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. Born Nov. 10, 1926, in Logansport, he was the son of Harley Hines and Elizabeth Baschab. He was married Dec. 25, 1948, in Georgetown, to Shelia Reese. He retired as a supervisor for Coca-Cola Bottling Co. after 47 years of service. Wayne was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean War. He was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, the Camping Club and American Legion Post 60. He enjoyed camping and mushroom hunting. Surviving are his wife, Shelia Hines, Logansport; daughter, Debra Sisson and husband, Paul, Logansport; sons, Tim Hines and Mike Hines, both of Logansport; grandchildren, Barry and Kyle Sisson, Natalie and Hayley Hines, and Eric Hines, all of Logansport, and Erin Zollner, Brownsburg. He was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Loretta Hines; three brothers, Harold, Carl and Clarence Hines; and two sisters, Gladys Bougher and Agnes Turner. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Gundrum Funeral Home. Burial, with full military graveside rites, will be in Pisgah cemetery, Logansport. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or Calvary Presbyterian Church in Logansport.

Raymond W. Downs
March 22, 1946 - February 20, 2012

Raymond W. Downs, 65, Logansport, died at 3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at his residence.

Born March 22, 1946, in Logansport, he was the son of John Downs and Roberta Bliss.

He worked as a security guard at the State Hospital.

Mr. Downs was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam War and Korean Conflict.

Surviving are his mother, Roberta Burgess, North Augusta, S.C.; brothers, Franklin Downs, Logansport, and John L. Downs, Fort Wayne; sister, Rosanna Smith and husband, Dean, North Augusta, S.C.; several half-brothers and sisters; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Gundrum Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Collins officiating. Burial will be in Ever-Rest Memorial Park, Cass County.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Marcia Peter Cook
June 1, 1949 - February 29, 2012

LOGANSPORT — Marcia Peter Cook, 62, Logansport, died at 9:33 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, at Woodlawn Hospital in Rochester.

Born June 1, 1949, in Rochester, she was the daughter of Frederick L. and Martha Viola Dillman Peter. She was married Dec. 12, 1992, to Robert Cook, who preceded in death. She worked at Coppes’s Kitchens in Nappanee.

A 1968 graduate of Caston High School. Marcia enjoyed designing floral arrangements.

Surviving are her parents, Fred and Viola Peter, Logansport; brother, Dennis Peter, Macy; sister, Melanie Wickersham and husband, Tony, Kokomo; Sister-In-Law, Becky Peter, Macy; nieces, Jennifer Schwartz and husband, Andrew, Alaska, Amanda Short and husband, Jim, Logansport, and Trista Ennis and husband, Jason, Delphi; Nephews, Tad Wickersham, Lafayette, Bryce Nolan, Knoxville, TN, Lake Wickersham, Kokomo and Paul Short, Logansport; and great-nieces, Madison and Marissa Ennis, Delphi, and Sheila Schwartz, Alaska.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Gundrum Funeral Home with Pastor Ben Pippens officiating. Burial will be in Corinth Brethren cemetery, Twelve Mile.

Friends may call one hour before services Saturday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.

Wilbur Ison

Wilbur Ison, 78, Beech Grove passed away March 27, 2008. He was born September 30, 1929 in Hazard, KY to the late Print and Reda Reed Ison. Wilbur will now be with his beloved wife Travis J. Griffie Ison whom he married on May 5, 1951 in Hazard, KY, who preceded him in death. He was employed many years as a drywall hanger. He was a great father to six children Brenda, Pam, Sheila, Tina and Lisa all of Indianapolis and preceded in death by one son Randall. Also, grandfather of 13 and great grandfather of 5. He will be greatly missed but not forgotten. But we know he's on another great fishing trip catching a big one. Visitation will be Monday, March 31, 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with the service to follow at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 7602 Madison Avenue, Indianapolis.

Mary Ann Cox

Mary Ann Cox, 70, Indianapolis passed away March 25, 2008. She was born September 6, 1937 in Indianapolis to the late Dallas L. and Katherine L. McKain Critchlow. Mary Ann married Edward L. Cox on November 11, 1961 and he survives. She was employed as an executive secretary at Danner Brothers for seven years retiring in 1966. Her memberships included Southport Presbyterian Church; Past Worthy Matron of Southport Chapter No. 442 Order of Eastern Star and Christian Women's Club. Other survivors include daughter Andrea L. (Schuyler) Culver, Greenwood; son Christopher L. (Tricia) Cox, Fishers; granddaughters Grace, Blessing, Sophia and Katie and sister Carolyn M. Calderon. Services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, March 29 at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center with visitation 4 -8 p.m., Friday, March 28 at the Mortuary. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Glenns Valley. Memorial gifts have been suggested to American Diabetes Association.

Rev. James A. Bailey

77, Indianapolis went to be with the Lord March 22, 2008. He was born January 26, 1931 in Iron City, TN to the late George and Evie (Short) Bailey. He married Genell Phillips February 2, 1948 in Tennessee and she survives. He graduated Union Bible Seminary (Union Bible College) and later served as Pastor of Churches of the Nazarene in Indiana, Tennessee, and Florida, a total of over 36 years.

Other survivors include his sons Rev. J.D. (Esther) Bailey, Avon, and Rick (Kimberly) Bailey, Indianapolis; daughter Debra (Gary) Sneed, Indianapolis; brother Bill (Bonnie) Bailey, Leoma, TN; sister Margie Smith, Loretto, TN, Evie Goodpastor, Anderson, Mitzi Bailey, San Diego, CA, and Betty (Ron) Cornnachini, Merced, CA; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his brothers George, Frank, Acie, and Marvin Bailey, and sister Bonnie Bailey.
Service will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, March 27 at Southside Church of the Nazarene, 2515 E. Thompson Road, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46227 with visitation 4:00 - 8:00 PM, Wednesday, March 26 in Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions have been suggested to Southside Church of the Nazarene, Indianapolis.

Norman Slade

Norman P. Slade, 56, Indianapolis passed away March 17, 2008. He was born December 11, 1951 to the late Donald and Martha Smith Piper. Norman was a U.S. Navy veteran and a graduate of Manual High School. He was employed twenty seven years at Bell Industries, currently as a warehouse supervisor. Survivors are daughter Jennifer Slade, Greenwood; granddaughter Taylor Slade; sisters JoAnn (Trenton) Ryan and Barbara (Bruce) Kimbley, both of Indianapolis; brothers William Slade, Danville and Gerald (Tammy) Piper, Indianapolis. Services will be 10:30a.m., Friday, March 21 at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center with visitation 5 - 8 p.m., Thursday, March 20 at the Mortuary. Interment in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.

Brian Burchfield

Brian David Burchfield, 40, Greenwood formerly Indianapolis passed away March 18th, 2008. He was born July 24th, 1967 in Indianapolis. Brian married Lisa Williams on October 26th, 1996 and she survives. He was employed for three years in sales at Insight/Comcast and an active member of Greenwood Christian Church. Brian was a 1985 graduate of Perry Meridian High School where he was all-state in football, wrestling and track earning nine varsity letters. He attended the University of Illinois on a full football scholarship. His other survivors include daughters Abbigail (11) and Brooke (8) Burchfield; step daughter Ashley Williams all of Greenwood; step son Michael Williams, Mitchell; step grandchildren Braylon, Hayden and Madison Williams; mother Linda Burchfield and father Michael Burchfield both of Indianapolis; grandmother Lou Hendricks, Franklin; brother Michael (Emily) Burchfield, Indianapolis and half brother Brandon Burchfield, Indianapolis. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 22 at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center with visitation 4 - 8 p.m., Friday at the Mortuary. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Glenns Valley. Memorial gifts will be accepted for Abbi and Brooke's Trust Fund.

Lloyd Carter

Lloyd S. Carter 85, Indianapolis passed away March 14, 2008. He was born September 5, 1922 in Paris KY to the late Wallace and Lucy Carter. Survivors include his wife Credwyn Carter; sons Sidney (Linda) Carter, Meridian, TX, Mark (Chris) Carter, Merrimack, NH, and Chris (Cathy) Carter, Louisville, KY; daughter Kathleen Carter, Indianapolis; brother Merle Carter, Lexington, KY; sister Betty Sue Thurman, Maryland; 13 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his brother Franklin Carter. Private arrangements handled by Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center.

Dexter Patrick

86, Indianapolis went to be with the Lord March 16, 2008. He was born February 22, 1922 in Hindman, Kentucky to the late Elisha and Emaline (Napier) Patrick. He married Nell Gayhart June 19, 1944 in Indianapolis and she survives. Dexter was employed 18 years by E.C. Atkins, three years Ford Motor Company, 13 years Claude L. Owens Contractors, and 26 years at Indianapolis Public School #54 retiring in 1987 as head custodian. He was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church.

He was a man of strength and character, with a love for the Lord. He verbally expressed God's salvation plan to all he met, even to strangers on the street. Well done thou good and faithful servant.

Other survivors include son Michael (Marilyn) Patrick, Greenwood; daughters Kim (Joe) Anderson, Indianapolis, Betty Hart, Indianapolis, Connie Stewart, Indianapolis, and Eydie (Don) Vocke, Louisville, KY; brother Lexie (Magdaline) Patrick, Kendleville; sisters Mae (Ed) Dravis, Greenwood, and Hazel (Ed) Pierle, Brownsburg; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by eight brothers.

Service will be 1:00 PM, Wednesday, March 19 in Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center with visitation 4:00 - 8:00 PM, Tuesday, March 18. Entombment in Washington Park East cemetery. Memorial gifts have been suggested to Lighthouse Baptist Church, 6950 E. Raymond St., Indianapolis, IN, 46239.

Ernest R. Dunbar

Ernest R. Dunbar, 82, Franklin formerly Indianapolis, passed away March 10, 2008 after a short illness. He was born June 19, 1925 in Indianapolis. After graduating from Arsenal Technical High School, he entered the U.S. Army at the outset of WWII. He served in Sicily and Italy where he earned the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Infantry Badge. At the conclusion of the war he entered Butler University where he earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration. After graduating from Butler he also earned a commission in the U.S. Air Force Reserve and retired in 1985 as a Lieutenant Colonel. He worked for the State of Indiana as a Business Administrator for 32 years before retiring in 1987. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Florence Marie (Wollenweber) Dunbar, on July 25, 1990. Surviving are his daughters Linda (Joe) Watson, Beth Dunbar; his sons Stephen Dunbar, all of Indianapolis and James (Mickey) Dunbar, Greenwood; nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren; a sister Delores Babb, Indianapolis and a brother, Robert (Carolyn) Babb, Indianapolis. Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 13 in Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 12 at the Mortuary. Interment will be in Round Hill cemetery. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association.

Cody H. West

Cody Hartwell West 13, Greenwood, passed away Monday, March 3, 2008. He was born May 31, 1994 in Beech Grove, the beloved son of Ronald and Gina West, who survive.
Just 13 years old and a 7th grader at Clark Middle School, Cody touched many lives in his too brief life. Cody loved to ride his bike, collect stuffed turtles, and play with his cat and dogs. He was looking forward to spring so he could plant a garden of his favorites, hot peppers. A self-taught computer wiz kid, Cody could analyze and explain the most complex concepts and machinery with great skill and aptitude.

Cody was an affectionate and thoughtful boy with a sense of humor and generous spirit that touched everyone he met. He is a beautiful soul who will forever be loved and missed by all who have been blessed to know our cherished Cody.
Other survivors include his maternal grandmother Trieste J. Maio, Greenwood; paternal grandmother Mary E. Morgan; brothers Anthony J. West, Jason M. (Angela) West, and Ronald H. (Theresa) West, all of Greenwood; and sister Suzanne West, Greenwood.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM, Friday, March 7 at Our Lady of the Greenwood Catholic Church with visitation 5:00 - 8:00 PM, Thursday, March 6 in Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center. Prayers will be offered 9:15 AM, Friday at the mortuary. A Rosary will be Thursday 7:30 PM at the mortuary. Interment in Calvary cemetery. Memorial gifts have been suggest to Earlywood Education Center, 500 Earlywood Drive, Franklin, Indiana 46131.

Evelyn Avanelle Steinhardt

93, Indianapolis passed away February 20, 2008. She was born July 12, 1914 in Indianapolis to the late John and Edna (Wright) Miller. She married Nicholas C. Steinhardt April 11, 1934 in Indianapolis who preceded her in death December 6, 1972. Survivors include her sons Terry (Sandra) Steinhardt and Nick (Elaine) Steinhardt, all of Indianapolis; sisters Carolyn (Dan) Roth, Indianapolis and Nadine Sullivan, Ft. Walton Beach, FL; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her brother Lyndall Miller; sisters Leneva Wade, and Mildred Woodyard. A memorial visitation will be from 2:00 - 4:00 PM, Saturday, February 23 in Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center. There will be no service. Memorial contributions have been suggested to St. Mark Catholic Church or Knights of Columbus #3660.

Dorothy D. Knartzer

Dorothy 'Dotty' D. Knartzer, 63, Greenwood passed away February 8, 2008. She was born November 4, 1944 in Indianapolis to the late James R. and Charlotte Langsford Winn. Dotty married James F. Knartzer on June 25, 1966 in Indianapolis, and he survives. She was employed eighteen years at Eli Lilly & Company retiring in 1998 as a quality assurance secretary. She was a member of St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church. Other survivors include daughter Kimberly (Rob) Dinkel, Greenwood; son Kurt (Megan) Knartzer, Trafalgar; granddaughter Kaitlyn Dinkel; sisters Rosemary (Curt) Boggs, Cloverdale, Susan Winn, Greenwood, Marilyn McCurdy, Indianapolis, Patti Graham, New Castle and Barbara (Don) Romaine, Wanamaker; brothers John (Carol) Winn, Indianapolis, Steve (Donna) Winn, Westfield, James (Cindy) Winn, Lebanon and Joseph (Trish) Winn, Indianapolis. She was also preceded in death by a sister Graceann Berry. Prayers will be 10:15 a.m., Tuesday, February 12 at Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church. Visitation will be 4:00 - 8:00 p. m., Monday, February 11 at the Mortuary. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. Memorial gifts have been suggested to St. Mark The Evangelist Catholic Church.

Lawrence R. O'Toole

Lawrence R. 'Bob' O'Toole, 84, Indianapolis passed away February 18, 2008. He was born January 10, 1924 in Indianapolis to the late Lawrence P. and Dorothy W. Moore O'Toole. Bob married Elizabeth 'Betty' Ann Williams on November 12, 1944 in Indianapolis and she preceded him in death on December 2, 2002. He was a Navy veteran and was retired from Indianapolis Times as a mailer. He is a member of Southport Presbyterian Church. In recent years his participating in The Daily Gathering of the 'Einstein Bagel Club' provided much pleasure and satisfaction. He is survived by daughters Karen (Allen) Blackburn, Grapevine, TX, Kristine (Steve) Summers, Indianapolis, Kimberly(John) Krier, Indianapolis and Kathryn (Gregory)Austin, Dallas, TX; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; sister Patricia (Erling)Horn, Walnut Creek, CA; brother William O'Toole, Phoenix, AZ; cousins Harvey (Pat) Rau, Greenwood and Charles (Joan)Rau, Columbus. Memorial gifts have been suggested to Southport Presbyterian Church. Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center is handling arrangements.

Richard E. Hicks, Jr.

63, Indianapolis passed away February 5, 2008. He was born April 25, 1944 in Indianapolis to the late Richard E. Sr. and Margie (Sears) Hicks. He married Debra Ray July 11, 1970 in Indianapolis and she survives. He was employed 15 years as an independent roofer and later for 20 years as a tool and die maker for Standard Die Supply, retiring 1984. Richard enjoyed fishing and was an avid woodworker. He is also survived by his son Donald (Exie) Hicks, Indianapolis; daughters Tammy Hicks, Indianapolis, April Hicks, Marietta, GA, Amy Denley, Litha Springs, GA; brothers Larry (Mary) Hicks, Indianapolis, Kenneth, David and Thomas Hicks, all of Indianapolis; sister Vicki Hicks, Indianapolis; and nine grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his son Richard Ray Hicks; brothers James, Michael and Donald Hicks; and sister Carolyn Hicks. Services will be 1:00 PM, Monday, February 11, in Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center with visitation from 2:00 - 6:00 P.M., Sunday, February 10. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Hall, Indiana.

Opal Dodwell

88, Indianapolis, passed away Tuesday, February 5, 2008. Surviving is her daughter Sally Ann Dodwell, several loving cousins and many dear friends. Opal was born March 6, 1919 in Kokomo and resided in Orlando, Florida for several years after retiring from Delco Remy. She then moved back to Indianapolis. The family is extremely grateful to the wonderful staff and management of Greenwood Health and LivingCommunity. She will be sadly missed. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, P.O. Box 6069, Dept. 95, Indianapolis, Indiana 46206-6069. Private arrangements handled by Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center.

Daniel A. Johnson

60, Beech Grove, formerly of Indianapolis passed away February 5, 2008. He was born February 14, 1947 in Indianapolis to the late Harry and Valeria (Lafferty) Johnson. He married Peggy Showecker November 21, 1987 in Indianapolis and she survives. Daniel's memberships include Holy Cross Catholic Church and The Vocational and Industrial Clubs of America. He was employed as a vocational teacher 10 years at John Marshall High School, 10 years at Washington High School, and 13 years at Manual High School. He had previously worked 10 years for Bryant Heating and AC. He is also survived by his daughters Daniele (Alp) Berker and Larissa (Brian) Blakley, both of Indianapolis; step-son Chas. Michael (Lacey) Spark, Indianapolis; brother Gary (Kim) Johnson, Noblesville; sister Nadine Suits, Indianapolis, nine grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Harry and Mark Johnson and Jerry Howe. A memorial service will be conducted 7:00 PM, Friday, February 8 in Singleton Community Mortuary and Memorial Center with visitation two hours prior to the service.
