Jack "Woody" Woodruff

September 2, 1929 - July 8, 2002
Jack "Woody" Woodruff, 72, of Monticello died Monday, July 8, 2002 at his home. He had been ill for several months.

He was born September 2, 1929 in Bluffton, the son of Earl and Ethel Harden Woodruff. He married Jane Vick on January 28, 1956 in Kingsford Heights, IN. She survives.

A former teacher, coach and athletic director he spent most of his life working with athletes. Woody started his coaching career in Hanna, IN in 1953-54. He was then drafted into the Army and served his country from 1954-1956.

He coached in Reynolds from 1956 — 1962, then moved on to Monon in 1962 and was there for a year. From 1963 — 1965 he was at North White. He then coached at Francesville from 1965-1967. He was at Twin Lakes from 1967 - 1991 until his retirement. In November 1993 he returned to North White as the athletic director and administrative assistant until his retirement in 1999.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion, and Moose Lodge all of Monticello. Woody worked at Indiana Beach for several summers.

In May 2002, North White named their athletic complex "The Jack Woodruff Athletic Complex" Hoffman Field.

In 1999 Katie Wolf awarded Woody the Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest honor bestowed in the State of Indiana.

Surviving besides his wife are a daughter, Jill Sink, Monticello; a son, Jeff (Mary Jo) Woodruff of Monticello; a sister Beulah Brinneman of Bluffton and four grandchildren, Chad & Jay Sink and Kyle and Blake Woodruff. One sister, Maxine Stukey preceded him in death.

Visitation will be at the Miller-Roscka Funeral Home in Monticello from 4 — 8 p.m. on Thursday and from 8:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Miller-Roscka Funeral Home with Rev. James R. Copeland officiating.

Burial will be at I.O.O.F. Riverview Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the North White Athletic Department, Monticello United Methodist Church or St. Elizabeth Hospice Program.

Billy Dean Wray

May 25, 1945 - November 30, 2001
Billy Dean Wray, 56, Chalmers, died Friday, Nov. 30, at his residence.

He was born May 25, 1945, to Gerold E. and Rose Jane Watkins Wray, in Pittsburg. He was married April 10, 1982, to Dixie Leming at Tulsa, Oklahoma and she survives.

He was a 1963 graduate of Delphi Community High School.

He was retired from the maintenance department at Consolidated Industries in Lafayette.

He was a member of the White County Cricket Dart League and was an avid NASCAR fan.

Other survivors include his mother Rose Jane Wray, Delphi; a daughter, Michelle (David) Brown, West Point; a stepson, Jason Prather, Medford, Oregon; sisters, Wanda Hufford and Betty (John) Patrick, both of Delphi and Judi A. Collins, Kokomo; a brother, Phillip Wray, Monticello and two granddaughters.

His father Gerold E. Wray died January 4, 1994.

Services were Monday at the Davidson Funeral Home, Delphi, with Pastor Jarrell Hartle officiating.

Burial was in the I.O.O.F. Memorial Gardens, Pittsburg.

Memorials may be made to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 1501 Hartford St., Lafayette, IN 47904.

Donald L. Wright

November 18, 1918 - January 22, 2003
Donald Louis Wright, 84, of rural Monon, died Wednesday, January 22, 2003, in a house fire at his residence.

He was born in Sumner, Ill., on November 18, 1918 to Ira and Ina Lint Wright.

He had lived in the Monon community for 1 1/2 years, coming from Fellsmere, Fla.

He was employed at the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad, Hammond, for 28 years.

Survivors include sons, Donald Wright and Jeffrey Wright, both of Hammond, and Clyde Wright of Cicero, Ill.; a sister Cora Jane Cook of Vincennes; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

A brother and a sister are deceased.

No visitation or service was held.

Burial was in the Sumner Cemetery, Sumner, Ill.

Kellogg Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Essie Pearl Wright

[1920?] - December 1, 2002
Essie Pearl Wright, 82, a former Monon High School teacher, passed away Dec. 1, 2002, in Albuquerque, NM. She is survived by her husband, Dr. William F. Wright, Sr.; her son Dr. William F (Phyllis) Wright Jr. of Hobbs, NM; her daughter, Teresa (Robert) Clack of Florissant, MO and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Wright was born in St. Bernice, IN. She graduated from St. Bernice High School in 1938, then attended Terre Haute Business College one year. She earned two bachelor degrees, in Business and in English, from Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee, IL. She earned her masters degree in Business Administration from Ball State University. From 1949 to 1952, she taught business classes at Monon High School.

In August of 1952, the Wrights moved to Albuquerque and started teaching in the school system there. She also taught at the University of New Mexico. In 1960, she chose to be a stay-at-home wife and mother. When her children went to college, she became an avid volunteer and cared for the elderly in their homes. She was an active member of Heights First Church of the Nazarene for over 50 years. She loved to read and write. The Bible and daily devotionals guided her life.

Services were held at Heights First Church of the Nazarene in Albuquerque on December 7, 2002. Mrs. Wright was a class sponsor for the Monon High School class of 1951. Three members living in that area, Joe Hahn, Stan Helfrich and Gerry Smith, attended the services.

Lowell Leslie Wright

March 11, 1939 to August 12, 1998
Lowell Leslie Wright, 59, of Rockville. Ind. And former White County resident died Wednesday, Aug. 12, in Lee Alan Bryant Healthcare near Rockville.

He was born March 11, 1939 to George and Cleta Kenyon Wright in White County. He had never married.

He was a retired laborer.

Surviving are four sisters: Jean Bertha Franklin of Georgetown, KY.; Suzanne Anderson of Wise, VA; and Stelia Geraldine Conrad and Amanda Geisler both of Monticello.

Inurnment service was Sunday at noon in the IOOF Cemetery in Brookston for family and friends. Hartzler Funeral Home. Brookston, was in charge of arrangements.

Denver A. Yeck, Sr.

April 10, 1917 - May 28, 2002
Denver A. Yeck, Sr., 85, of Monon died Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at his residence. He had been ill for about a month.

He was born April 10, 1917 in Minden, West Virginia, the son of Esther Margaret Daniels and Andy Yeck. His marriage was to S. Alberta Postan. She died April 1, 1983.

He worked at the former Monon Stone Quarry and several other stone quarries for several years. He also had worked at Northway Products in Rensselaer for 7 years.

He was a World War II veteran, serving with Battery A 138th FAB.

He moved to the Monon area in 1953 from Minden, W.V.

He is survived by 1 son, Denver A. Yeck, Jr. of Wolcott and a daughter, Sheila Yeck, of Monon and one brother, Emerson Yeck of Columbus, Ohio. One son, four brothers, one sister and two half sisters are deceased.

He had 3 grand children and five great grandchildren. Two great grandchildren are deceased.

Services were Saturday, June 1, 2002 at Kellogg Funeral Home in Monon with Pastor Gary Roberts officiating.

Burial was in Chapel Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association.

Infant Emily Lorene Yeck

[?] - March 4, 2001
Infant Emily Lorene Yeck, Monon died Sunday, March 4, 2001 at Home Hospital, Lafayette.

She was the daughter of Kevin and Jennifer Trosper Yeck of Monon.

Surviving besides her parents are maternal grandmother Wanita Holbrook, Monon; fraternal grandparents Denver & Sharon Yeck, Jr., Wolcott: maternal great-grandmothers Donna Conley, Monon and Darlene Bailey, Royalton, KY; paternal great grandmother Katherine Clear, Monon and paternal great grandfather Denver Yeck, Sr., Monon.

The funeral will be held at Grace Community Baptist Church, at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7 with Pastor Gary Roberts officiating.

Burial will be in Chapel Cemetery, Monon.

Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home is in charge of the services.

Memorials may be given to the Grace Community Baptist Church.

Timothy E. Yeck

November 16, 1946 to December 17, 2000
Timothy E. Yeck, 54, of Monon died suddenly at his home at 4:00 p m. on Sunday, December 17, 2000.

He was born November 16, 1946 in Fayetteville, West Virginia. He was the son of Denver A. Sr. and S. Alberta Postan Yeck. He had been a shop foreman at Jack Isom Construction in Reynolds for 25 years and had serving as a Lance Corporal in the U.S. Marines from 1967-71, serving in Vietnam.

He graduated from North White High School in 1964 and had lived in the community most of his life.

Surviving besides his father is one son, Jeff Yeck of Lafayette; one sister, Sheila Yeck of Monon and one brother Denver A. Yeck Jr. of Wolcott.

Funeral services will be at tbc Kellogg Funeral Home in Monon at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday with Rev. Steve Birch officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. tonight.

Burial with full military rites will be conducted at Chapel Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Riley Hospital in Indianapolis Children's Wish Foundation.

Rose Etta Armstrong Yerk

October 22, 1899 to November 12, 1995
Rose Etta Armstrong Yerk, 96, a resident of Tioga Pines Living Center, Monticello, died Sunday, Nov. 12, at the center. She had been a Tioga Pines resident since Nov. 3, 1993.

She was born Oct. 22, 1899, to Festus Stephen and Emma Smith Armstrong, in Secor, Ill. She was married March 12, 1918, to John Elmer Yerk, in Secor, Ill, and he died May 24, 1973.

She was a member of the Brookston Federated Church Ruth Circle and of the Prairie Home Demonstration Club. She also belonged to the Forget Me Not Club.

Survivors are four sons; Earl M., Wolcott; Vern A., Monticello; Gene R., Brookston and Cletus E., West Lafayette; a daughter, Berniece Green, Monticello and 19 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. A son, Ivan Verk, a great grandson, five brothers and five sisters are deceased.

Funeral services were Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with Rev. Leland McReynolds officiating.

Burial was in the IOOF Brookston Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Brookston Federated Church.
