Edna (Nalley) VanVoorst
August 5, 1903 - June 6, 2002
Edna (Nalley) Van Voorst, 98, former Reynolds resident, died Thursday, June 6, 2002 at Twin Lakes Village in Monticello.
She was born August 5, 1903 in Buck Creek, Indiana, the daughter of Samuel and Wilhelmina Plengy Nalley.
She married Ernest Sluyter VanVoorst on December 21, 1921 in Lafayette, Indiana. He died April 2, 2001.
She was a homemaker and helped her husband during their farming years. They farmed in West Point Township and moved to Reynolds in 1958. They moved to Lakeview Commons in Monticello in March 1998. In March 2002 she moved to Twin Lakes Village.
She was the oldest member of the Reynolds United Methodist Church and a former member of the Honey Creek Extension Homemakers.
Surviving are two sons, Russell Eugene (Pearl) VanVoorst, Reynolds and Virgil Wayne (Shelby) VanVoorst, Brookston and two daughters, Wilma Ann (Paul) Geisler, Idaville and Ruth Marie (Demspter) Martin, Reynolds. Two nephews and one niece also survive. She had 14 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 21 great-great grandchildren. Several step great grandchildren and several step great-great grandchildren also survive.
A son William Lloyd VanVoorst, 3 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter, 4 sisters and 2 brothers are deceased.
Funeral services were Saturday, June 8, 2002 at Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston with Rev. Bryan Ton and Rev. James Copeland officiating. Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Reynolds United Methodist Church or the Activity Fund at Lakeview Commons.
Stella M. VanVoorst
October 15, 1909 - September 17, 2001
Stella M. (Cisan) VanVoorst, 91, a former Chalmers resident, died Monday, September 17, 2001 at Twin Lakes Village, Monticello. She had resided at the village since December 27, 1999.
She was born in Cleveland on October 15, 1909. To Joseph Peter and Frances Rochnowski Cisan. She married Robert Ellsworth Vanvoorst in Cleveland on April 26, 1930. He died February 20, 1975.
She was a 1926 graduate of Miami (Fla.) High School.
She and her husband owned Van's Market in Chalmers for 31 years. She later worked as a housekeeper at the Grad House at Purdue University.
She was a member of the Chalmers American Legion Auxiliary, Lafayette Eagles Aerie 347 and was a charter member of the Chalmers Civic Club.
She is survived by two daughters, Nona (Walter) Decker of Fishers and Alice Harrison of Sparta, N.J.; two sons Robert J. VanVoorst and Roger L. (Gladys) VanVoorst, both of Monticello; 11 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A brother, five sisters, three grandchildren and a great-grandchild are deceased.
Funeral Services were Saturday at Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston with Pastor Bill Henderson officiating.
Burial was at the Chalmers Community Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to White County Council on Aging.
Mary Jeanette Victor
January 16, 1924 to October 6, 1999
Mary Jeanette Washburn Victor, 75, a former Brookston resident, died Wednesday, October 6, at Mercy/General Nexcare in Muskegon, Michigan.
She was born Jan. 16, 1924, to Jesse Hill and Ida Pearl Foster Washburn, , near Newtown. She was married Nov. 19, 1954. to Robert Leo Victor, in Stockwell. He died Feb. 6, 1964.
She moved from Brookston to Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1994.
She graduated from Stockwell High School in 1941 and from Lafayette Business College in 1942.
She worked as a secretary for the Civil Service in Dayton, Ohio, from July 1942 to July 1943. She worked at ALCOA in Lafayette, from July 1943 to May 1955 and from August 1964 to February 1,1986.
She was a member of the Stockbridge Avenue United Methodist Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan and of the ALCOA Retirees Club in Lafayette.
She is survived by a son, Daniel Richard Victor, Kalamazoo, Mich.; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Lynette Victor in 1958; and a brother, Frank F. Washburn in 1957.
Funeral service was Saturday at Brookston United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jan Dimick officiating. Hartzler Funeral Home was in charge.
Burial was in the IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.
Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes. Association or the Brookston United Methodist Church.
Lloyd C. Viney
December 30, 1939 to March 18, 2000
Lloyd C. Viney, 60, Monticello, died Saturday, March 18, at Monticello Assisted Living and Healthcare Center.
He was born Dec. 30, 1939, to Fred C. and Donna Irene Carson Viney, in Yeoman. He was married July 12, 1963, to Linda M Haskins, in Monticello, and she survives.
He attended Delphi schools and served in the Indiana National Guard.
He worked at RCA and Don 's TV, both in Monticello. Also he worked for Boanco Farms in Lafayette.
He was a member of Yeoman United Methodist Church and participated in the church dart ball league.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Kristina (Kevin) Christensen of Idaville and Annie (Ed) Brown and Lisa (Tim) Baker, both of Monticello; sisters, Lois Turner and Phyllis Cadwalder, both of Monticello, Nancy Norman of Monon and Sheril Weaver of Idaville; brothers, Roger Viney, Monticello; Max Viney, Dayton, Ohio and Buster Viney, Frankfort; and eight grandchildren.
A brother and sister are deceased.
Funeral service was at 1:30 p.m. today at Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Densmore officiating.
Burial will be in Yeoman Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes. Association or the American Kidney Foundation.
Lawrence 'Cobb' Vogel
May 7, 1923 - July 1, 2001
Lawrence W. "Cobb" Vogel, 78, Monticello, died Sunday, July 1, 2001, at his residence.
He was born May 7, 1923, to Charles and Mary Pelfrense Vogel, in Reynolds. He was married Oct. 26, 1946, to Alberta T. Graves, in Kokomo and she survives.
He lived in the Monticello area his entire life and graduated from the "University of Reynolds" and attended Fort Wayne Business College.
He owned Vogel Real Estate in Monticello for over 30 years. He was an auctioneer for 50 years and served various Scout and community events. He handled farm real estate and household auctions. Two of his sons now continue the real estate and auctioneer businesses.
He was a member of the White County Board of Realtors and was past president and member of the National and State Auctioneers . He was a commissioner for eight years on the Indiana State Board of Auctioneers.
He served two terms on the White County Council.
He was a member of the Monticello Rotary Club and was instrumental in many fund-raising projects of the club. He was named Rotarian of the Year in 1996. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus and was past Grand Knight for four years. He was also involved in the Knights of Columbus 4thDegree.
He served as a board member of Wabash Valley Hospital in Lafayette for two terms. He also served as a board member for the Greater Monticello Chamber of Commerce and was a co-partner in the financing of the new Chamber of Commerce building.
He served many years on White County United Way drives as an auctioneer and fund-raiser. He was a member of the Elks Club in Logansport and Tippecanoe Country Club in Monticello.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, where he served as minister and collection counter for a period of 15 years.
He received several awards including: the Sagamore of the Wabash Award from Gov. Bob Orr in 1982; the National Auctioneers Hall of Fame Award in 1992; and the George Armstrong Spencer Award from the Greater Monticello Chamber of Commerce in 1997.
He played the organ at two Monticello nursing homes for nine years. He enjoyed golfing with friends and playing bridge and euchre.
Surviving with his wife are four sons, Gregory D. (Tammy), Bruce W. (Carolyn), Phillip L. (Susan) and Chris A. (Vicki), all of Monticello; two sisters, Loretta Bossung, of Reynolds and Marie Burns, Monticello; 10 grandchildren and a great grandchild. Three brothers are deceased.
A Knights of Columbus service was held Wednesday, at 9 a.m. at the Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, Monticello. Funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, at Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church with the Revs. James Goodrum and Donald Hardebeck officiating.
Burial was in Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the Emmaus Mission in Logansport or the Gibault House in Terre Haute.
Mark C. VonArb
May 14, 1957 to June 13, 1999
Mark Charles VonArb, 42, of Lafayette, died early Sunday morning in a motorcycle accident in Tippecanoe County.
He was born May 14, 1957, to Robert C. and Ruby Ann Hirter VonArb, in St. Louis.
He was a 1976 graduate of Harrison High School and attended Ivy Tech State College.
He worked at Fairfield Manufacturing Co. in Lafayette, as a machine operator.
He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Lafayette.
He is survived by his mother, Ruby Hirter Lord and stepfather, Howard Lord of Burnettsville; a sister, Julia Ann Von Arb, Brookston; a stepsister, Francis Owens, of Peru; a stepbrother, Steven Lord, Burnettsville and a nephew.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert VonArb.
Funeral service will be Thursday at 10:30, at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Alvin Rockey officiating Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens, West Lafayette.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Bernard N. Wagner
August 10, 1920 to January 11, 2000
Bernard Nicholas Wagner, 79, Monticello, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Monticello Healthcare Center. He had resided at the center for 4 1/2 years.
He was born Aug. 10, 1920, to Anthony and Mary Stien Wagner, in White County. He was married Feb. 3, 1945, to Eileen LaVerne Moore, in Remington. She survives.
He lived in Wolcott and Remington and moved in 1978 to Monticello.
He was a farmer in his early life, then worked at the milk plant in Remington and did elevator work.
In his later years he was a carrier for the Monticello Herald Journal, Lafayette Journal and Courier and Chicago Tribune.
He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church in Monticello.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Martin J. (Wendy) Wagner, Springfield, VA and Anthony F. (Carmalee Middleton) Wagner, Monticello; daughters, Mrs. Glenn "Catherine" Minick, Remington; Theresa L. Wagner, Monticello and Mrs. James "Jacqueline" Meyers, Monon; a son-in-law, Charles Robbins, Elkhart; sisters, Luella Clark, Remington; Eileen Egan, Medaryville and Shirley Lehman, Nappanee; 11 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and four step-great-great- grandchildren. Two brothers, Eugene Wagner and Richard Wagner; a daughter, Marie Robbins and grandsons James and Michael Robbins are deceased.
Funeral services will be Friday at 10:30 am. in Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home, Monticello, with the Rev. James Goodrum officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Riverview IOOF Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the American Heart Association or Monticello Healthcare Center.
