Dwight E. (Tiny) Stokes
November 11, 1920 - January 12, 1999
Dwight E. (Tiny) Stokes, 78, of Sebring, Florida, formerly of Monticello, died January 12, 1999. He had been in failing health for the past 8 years.
He was born November 11, 1920 in Springfield, MO, the son of Emma Josephine (Wilson) and Ira G. Stokes. His marriage was to Glenna Rose Quick on March 30, 1941 in Frankfort, IN>
She survives along with a daughter, Mrs. George (Debra) Powers of Charleston, S.C. and a son, Larry Stokes of Battle Ground, IN. He had 8 grandchildren. Two brothers and a great-granddaughter preceded him in death.
Music was his life and love and he served during WWII in the U.S. Navy in the Entertainment Division.
He was the lead Tenor singer with Capt. Stubby and The Buccaneers for 50 years. He sang on WLS National Barn Dance in Chicago for 15 years; WBKB (ABC) TV Beat the Clock Show, Don McNeil's Breakfast Club (ABC) Radio for 4 years, WGN TV Chicago for 4 years and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville, TN in 1988. One of the oldest country music bands.
He was a 50 year member of the Carson Masonic Lodge in Cincinnati, OH and a past member of the Lions Club and Kiwanis.
Funeral services were January 18 at Hartzler Funeral Home in Brookston with Rev. Lelan McReynolds officiating. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.

Rev. Joseph Stoube
[1935?] - December 23, 2001
Rev. Joseph R. Stoube, 66, of Dyersville, and Muscatine, Iowa, the brother of a Monon woman died Sunday, December 23, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Dyersville.
He had pastored churches in Blue Island and Tampico, IL and also Lincoln Boulevard Baptist Church in Muscatine, Iowa. He later served as director of Spring Valley Bible Camp, chaplain for Bethesda Care Center, counselor for Job Services of Iowa and pulpit supply for area churches and was a member of the Red Cross Disaster Action Team.
He resided at Mercy Hospital in Dyersville for 10 years.
Local survivors include sisters Frances M. VanScoyk, Monticello and Josephine A. Thomson of Monon.
Services were at Calvary Baptist Church, Muscatine, Iowa with burial at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospital in Dyersville or Calvary Baptist Church.

Roy E. "Smokey" Stover
April 23, 1948 - November 19, 2001
Roy E. "Smokey" Stover, 53, of Reynolds, died unexpectedly Monday morning, November 19, 2001, at White County Memorial Hospital emergency room.
He was born on April 23, 1948, in Denver, Ind., to William John Paul and Betty J. Feist Stover. He married Nancy Lowe Hendress on April 21, 1999, in Monticello. She survives.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He worked at Morning Song Bird Seed Co. in Reynolds.
Surviving with his wife are step-daughters Chris Hendress and companion Billy Stearns of Wolcott and Tina (Ed) Doyle of Monon; a stepson, Ralph (Cheryl) Hendress of Montpelier, Ohio; a sister Bonnie Adams of Indianapolis; and nine step grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at Miller-Roscka Funeral Home. Services will be held at 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with the Rev. Chris Dodson officiating.
His body will he donated to the Anatomical Education Program, Indianapolis.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Jean R. (Hamling) Strantz
July 4, 1926 - January 17, 1998
Jean R. (Hamling) Strantz, 71 of Galveston died Saturday, January 17, 1998 in Vencor Hospital, Indianapolis, where she had been a patient since December 3.
She was born in Lafayette on July 4, 1926 the daughter of John and Helen Malia Hamling She married Raymond Strantz on November 27, 1948 in Indianapolis. He survives.
She was a 1944 graduate of Delphi High School.
She was a homemaker.
She was a former resident of Burnettsville and had moved to Galveston in 1984.
She is survived by her husband; three sons, John Christopher of Lafayette, Ronald Raymond of Indianapolis, and Michael Lee at home; a daughter, Mrs. Scott (Leann Jean) Sellers of Logansport; two sisters, Joan McClurg of Richmond and Judith Cross of Bluffton; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services were today at Hartzler Funeral Home, with Pastor Bill Henderson officiating. Burial was in the Chalmers Community Cemetery.
Cynthia Mae Strong
November 4, 1898 - August 9, 1998
Cynthia Mae Strong, 99, Francesville, died Sunday, August 9, at Parkview Haven Retirement Home, Francesville.
She was born Nov. 4, 1898, to Jasper and Ella Nora Helmick Houston, in Rantoul, Illinois.
She was married Dec. 23, 1919, to Roy Strong and he died Oct. 5, 1993.
She was a member of the Francesville United Methodist Church and had resided in Francesville for many years. She was a school teacher at Gilliam School.
Surviving are two daughters Anna Mae Bisher, Lafayette and Alice Pickett of Rice Lake, Wisconsin; 3 granddaughters, Barbara Fritz, Winamac; Susan Deno, Goodland and Sharon Almondovar, San Diego, CA. Two brothers, Ray Houston, Monon and Jasper Houston, Jr., Florida and two sisters Viola Swaim and Eva William both of Rensselaer, also survive. She had 11 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren.
Her husband, 4 brothers and 5 sisters, a granddaughter and a great grandchild preceded her in death. -
Services will be at the Querry-Ulbricht Funeral home, Francesville at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, August 13, with Rev. James Yater officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday.
Geneva M. Summers
November 10, 1906 - September 4, 1998
Geneva M. Summers, 91, of Brownsburg, died Sept. 4, at Brownsburg Health Care.
She was born Nov. 10, 1906, to Marion M. and Alice Krapff Wilson, in Chalmers. She was married to Hanley J. Summers who is deceased
She had lived in Griffith and Brookston. She had been a Brownsburg resident since 1997.
She was manager of the Will-Call Department at Goldblatt's Department Store in Hammond for 14 years, retiring in 1973.
She was a member of the Griffith Christian Church.
Surviving are three daughters, Jacqueline Keamey of Brownsburg, Sandra Ziegler of Cincinnati and Jane Papiese of Kennewick Wash.; a sister, Faye Waldsmith of West Lafayette; a brother, William E Wilson. Holiday, Florida; seven grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. .
Funeral services were at Kuiper Funeral Home in Highland.
Graveside services were at Chalmers Community Cemetery.
Herbert Sutton
November 24, 1914 - November 16, 1988
Herbert Sutton, 73, a retired Purdue University employee, died Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 11:35 a.m. in St Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center, Lafayette. He had been in failing health the past three years. He lived at 206 E. Second Street.
He was born Nov. 24, 1914 in Harrogate, Tenn.
His first marriage was Dec 25, 1938, to Mae Mink. She died July 5, 1967. On Aug. 4,1973, he married Barbara Capper Eberly, who survives.
Mr. Sutton was a painter at Purdue Memorial Union before retiring in 1979. He previously worked for the old Brown Rubber and he farmed several years.
He was a member of Brookston Church of Christ.
Surviving with the widow are a son, Donald Sutton, Leesburg, Va.; three daughters, Mrs. T.C. (Vonsetta) Bush, Dayton, Ohio; Mrs. Raymond (Sue Ellen) Anderson and Gail Sutfrni, both of Brookston; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Darrell (Tina) Smith, Brookston and Mrs. Clee (Nancy) Red dinger, Rockingham, N.C.; and one brother, George Sutton, Big Stone Gap, Va.
Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 4 brothers, and 4 sisters.
Service was Saturday. at 10:30 a.m. in the Brookston Church of Christ with Bill Romans officiating.
Interment was in Tippecanoe Memory Gardens.
The Hartzler Funeral Home, in Brookston was in charge of the service.
Thelma E. Shearer Sutton
July 16, 1910 - November 21, 1994
Thelma E. Shearer Sutton, 84, Brookston, died Monday morning at St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center, Lafayette.
She was born July 16, 1910 to Charles and Mary Ginrich Shearer in Carroll County. She married Shelby Sutton on Dec. 27, 1950. He died June 15, 1982.
She had been a resident of Brookston since 1911 and was a 1929 graduate of Brookston High School.
She was a former employee at the Brookston Cannery and the Brookston Furniture Factory. She had also worked as a housekeeper for the Brookston-Prairie Township Public Library and the Soldiers' Home.
Survivors include two nieces, Glendora Catron and Janice Adkins, both of Lafayette; one nephew, Robert Shearer; several great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
One sister and one brother are deceased.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, Pastor Lloyd Veldhuizen officiated.
Burial was in IOOF Brookston Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Brookston-Prairie Township Public Library or the American Heart Association.
Infant Adam Paul Swaim
July 16, 1991 - November 13, 1991
Infant Adam Paul Swaim, 4 months, Chalmers, died Wednesday, Nov. 13, in Riley Children's Hospital, Indianapolis.
He was born July 16, 1991, to R. Paul and Debra Demerly Swaim, in Lafayette. They survive.
Other survivors are one sister, Christine and one brother, Bobby, both at home; maternal grandparents, Ben Demerly and Mrs. Max (Marilyn) Scowden, both of Lafayette; and paternal grandparents, Norbert and Mary Jane Pilotte, Brookston. One sister is deceased.
The funeral was Saturday, in Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Leroy Kinnaman officiating.
Burial was in Brookston IOOF Cemetery.
