Gerald F. Meents Jr.
September 30, 1930 - December 29, 1998
Gerald E. "Red" Meents Jr., 67 Monticello, died Monday, Dec 29, at 9 p.m. at his residence.
He was born Sept. 30, 1930. northeast of Monticello, to Gerald F. and Elsie I. Boller Meents. He was married July 26, 1952, to Margie DeMoss, in Reynolds, and she survives.
He graduated in 1948 from Chalmers High School and lived in this area all his life.
He served from 1951-54, in the U.S. Marine Corps in Korea.
He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Soil Conservation Service from 1954-61.
He was the White County Executive Director of ASCS from 1961-85. During that time he was president of the State Employees Association and served as National Benefit Chairman, from 1967-70.
He was a livestock and grain farmer in White County. As an advocate of no-tilling farming, he was among the first to use no-till in White County in the mid 1970s.
Since 1985 he owned and operated Red Meents Real Estate Sales and Appraisal Service. He also continued to serve as an area farm manager and advisor.
He was a member of the Chalmers American Legion Post No. 268 where he was commander in 1960 and 1967. He was also a member of White County 40 & 8 No. 211 and the Monticello Goodfellows.
He was a member of the White Co. Sheriff Merit Board since 1974 and was presently serving as president.
He was a member of the Monticello United Methodist Church.
Surviving with the his wife are his son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Jennifer of Monticello; two grandchildren, Megan and Garrett, both of Monticello; a brother, Jack of Monticello; and three sisters, Mrs. Frank (Barbara) Duncan of Rensselaer and Mrs. Kenneth (Mary) Swartz and Mrs. Jerry (Shirley) Dahlenburg, both of Monticello.
A daughter is deceased.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 2, 1988, at 11 am. at Voorhis-Draper Funeral Home with the Rev. Jan McFall-Brown officiating.
Burial, with military rites will be Riverview I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the United Methodist Church or Monticello Goodfellows.
Marie (Burget) Metcalf
March 27, 1913 - September 23, 1998
Marie (Burget) Metcalf, 85, formerly Lafayette, died Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 5:10 p.m. in George Davis Manor, West Lafayette. She had been a resident at George David Manor since February.
She was born in Chalmers, March 27, 1913, to Murrell and Bessie Trostle Burget She was married July 3, 1936, to Thomas W. Metcalf, in Indianapolis, and he died June 7, 1994.
She graduated from Chalmers High School in 1932.
She had been employed at Loeb's Department Store, formerly in Lafayette.
She was a member of the Congress Street United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son, Garry of Overland Park, Kansas; a brother, Dean Burget, Brookston and three grandsons.
A sister and two brothers are deceased.
Funeral services were Monday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, with the Rev. Jan Dimick officiating
Burial was in Chalmers Community Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to the American Lung Association.
Marvin R. Meyer
September 22, 1922 - November 25, 2002
Marvin R. Meyer, 80, of Palmetto, Florida and a former local resident died Monday, November 25, 2002, at his residence.
He was born on September 22, 1922, in Wolcott, to Dietrich H. and Sophia Gronwald Meyer. He married Betty M. Moore on February 25, 4945, at St. James Lutheran Church in Reynolds. She survives.
He attended school in Wolcott.
He lived in Florida for the past 17 years after moving from the Buffalo/Sitka area, where he was a farmer.
He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Bradenton, Fla., and was a former member of St. James Lutheran Church in Reynolds.
Surviving with his wife are sons, David Meyer of Matoon, Ill., and Roger Meyer of Buffalo; daughter, Sharon Clark of Shelbyville; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Two brothers and a sister are deceased.
Funeral services were Saturday at St. James Lutheran Church with Pastor Charles Blakey officiating.
Burial was in St James Lutheran Cemetery, Reynolds.
Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church.
Lola Miles
September 21, 1924 - April 20, 2000
Lola Miles, 75, of Lafayette, IN died April 20, 2000 in South Street Health Care Center in Lafayette. She had been at the Health Care Center since January 1999.
She was born September 21, 1924 in Independence, IN the daughter of Leroy and Margaret Fay Points.
She attended Minneapolis, MN, schools and had worked as a package line operator for Green Giant in Lafayette for 15 years.
She had lived in Lafayette most of her life.
She was a member of DAV and Teamsters Union. She served in WWII as a WAC in Florida. She had received a Meritorious Award while in the service.
She is survived by a grandson, Tyson Huber of Monticello and a granddaughter Heather "Huber" Brown of Columbus, Ohio, and a Great granddaughter, Mary Brown.
Services were at Hahn Funeral Home on Monday with Rev. Charles Fluckey officiating with burial at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens in West Lafayette.
Bertha G. Miller
May 8, 1890 - March 28, 1988
Bertha G. Miller, 97, formerly of Chalmers, died at 4:45 p.m. Monday in St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center in Lafayette. She had been hospitalized one day. She had been a patient at Davis Manor in West Lafayette for the past five years.
She was one of the first directors of the REMC.
Mrs. Miller was born May 8, 1890, in West Point Township in White County, where she lived most of her life. She was married to Lewis Miller Dec. 17, 1907. He died in 1955.
Mrs. Miller was a member of Meadow Lake Presbyterian Church; Meadow Lake Missionary Society; and a former member of Tippecanoe Country Club in Mon ticello.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Foster Funeral Home, Wolcott, with Rev. Ron Spyker officiating. Interment at Meadow Lake Cemetery.
Rose A. Miller
February 16, 1894 - November 8, 1987
Rose A. Scott Miller, 93, Brookston and Jensen Beach, Florida, died Friday, Nov. 8, at 8:25 a.m. in Stuart Convalescent Center, Stuart, Florida.
Born Feb. 16, 1894, she was a native of Brookston. She married Frank M. "Bun" Miller, April 18, 1919, in Monticello. He survives.
Mrs. Miller helped her husband at the Miller Brothers restaurant from 1919 until 1940.
She was a member of Brookston United Methodist Church; Monticello Order of Eastern Star, Crystal Chapter 165; Brookston American Legion Auxiliary; and Psi Iota Xi sorority.
Surviving with the husband are a daughter, Mrs. Albert (Dorothy) Biddle of Jensen Beach; one brother, Kenneth Scott of Lafayette; and a sister, Mrs. Hannah Brown of Chapel Hill, S.C.
Also surviving are 3 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren. Two sisters preceded in death.
Services were Tuesday at Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston, at 11 am. with the Rev. Gene Ansell officiating. Interment was in IOOF Cemetery, Brookston.
Verna S. Monbeck
[1904?] - July 5, 2002
Verna S. Monbeck, 98, of Highland, a former Buffalo area resident died Friday, July 5, 2002.
She was a retired schoolteacher who had taught in Munster, Griffith and at Buffalo School in White County. Her husband, Lon Monbeck was superintendent of schools for Highland.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Highland. Survivors include nephews, Boyd (Carmen) Sutton of Wisconsin, Richard (Jean) Marion of Delphi and Robert (Leah) Marion of Monon.
Her husband Lon and a son John are deceased.
Funeral services were July 9 at Kupler Funeral Home Chapel in Highland with Rev. Rob Crytzer officiating.
Burial was at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville.
Memorials may be made to the church.
Georgia R. Stewart Morris
September 14, 1939 - June 13, 1997
Georgia H. Stewart Morris, 57, Delphi, died at 3:55 a.m., Friday, June 13, at Home Hospital, Lafayette.
She was born Sept. 14, 1939, to Carroll C. and Ethel Cox Stewart, in Vincennes. She was married Aug. 10, 1974, to Charles "Chuck" F. Morris in Danville, Ill., and he survives.
She had lived the past 17 years in Delphi.
She graduated in 1967 from Danville High School.
For 13 years she worked at Lafayette Social Security Administration and the past 10 years as a clerk-typist at Boyer-Addia in Lafayette.
She was a member of the Brookston United Methodist Church, choir and United Methodist Women.
She was a member of the Emmaus Community and a Recent Recovery Volunteer.
Surviving are her father and step-mother, Helen L. Stewart of Front Royal, Va.; two sons, Jeff and Jerry Edwards, both of Lafayette; six brothers, Jim Stewart, San Antonio, Tx.; Tom Turner and Bob Turner both of Danville, Ill.; Phil Stewart, Las Vegas, Nev.; Bill Stewart, Andover, Va.; and Bo Stewart, Duffield, Va.; two sisters, Patricia Gorman, Gaithersburg, Md. and Carolyn Parker, Adelphi, Md.; and six grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother and step-father.
The funeral service was Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Brookston United Methodist Church, with Pastor Mark T. Kurowski officiating.
Inurnment will be at a later date.
Arrangements were made by Hartzler Funeral Home, Brookston.
Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
